I think when elijah heard from hope that hayley is stil waiting for him on the other side , a part of him wanted to die.. just to be with her. And when the right occassion came, he did not hesitate to die. So, as much as he had all the family responsibility and love for klaus to die along with klaus, elijah had a greater personal reason to die - to unite with his love !
