Not all of history’s tales have a happy ending. In fact, most of them are rife with sad fates and great turmoil, with the ruthless passage of time erasing entire nations.
One of these tales it that of the Polabian Slavs . Westernmost of all Slavic tribes, these warriors and traders struggled for survival through their entire existence.
Known also as the Pomeranians or the Baltic Slavs, they were fundamental in the historical development of western and central Europe, and the emergence of Germany, from whom they suffered centuries of competition.
Join us as we uncovered the history of these diverse Slavic tribes about whose ethnogenesis there is a wealth of information and who remain a subject of active research to this day. What was the fate of these tribes? And, what have they left behind? The truth can be easier to discover than you might think.

@@prezthebutton8876 This video contains absurd and preposterous theory of the alleged Slavic appearance in Central Europe in VI century AD, unfortunately it is predominant in present day "science", yet it has been countered by the theory called autochtonic, which is much older and has way stronger evidence. The VI th century migratory theory is being enforced due to political reasons. Certainly there is numerous evidence to autochtonic theory that can be sorted int1. toponomastics /etymology of survives names of settlementa, mountains, rivers and lakes/. 2. ancient written sources. 3.comparative linguistics 4.fossil genetics. In my next comment I will show you some examples of toponomastic evidence that stretch way out west and south of Elbe and Saale limit. Last but not least there is a long list of scientists that support the autochtonic theory.

@@slavenarkaimovski3897 Linden tree. In English the Lipa/Lipsk that Leipzig comes from is called a Linden Tree. In German it is also Linden. Hence the area in Berlin, Under den Linden/Under the Linden (trees). It is a cognate with with Lipetsk in Russia and Liepaja in Latvia. Leipzig comes from the Slavic Lipsk. The area was originally inhabited by Slavic Polabian and Sorbian (Wendish) peoples, and then was gradually Germanized. However the word itself in it's original Slavic form, Germanized form, and German form is all related ultimately. Now we can see Linden, Lipa/Lipsk, and Liepaja all share a common Indo-European root, as a lot of nature stuff does in Indo-European languages. The ancient people who brought in the majority of European languages, weren't Slavic at that time, nor were they Germanic, Celtic, Baltic, Latin, Greek, Albanian....etc., as Indo-Europeans hadn't broken into distinct groups yet, and so spoke Proto-Indo-European, the Indo-European language bringers however shared the main Haplogroup of most Slavs and some Balts R1a, and some were also R1b which is more common in Germanics, Celts, and Latins. The R1b group was more prominent in the West, whereas the closer to the Yamnaya homeland you get the more R1a you see. This original Proto-Indo-European group were called the Yamnaya and their original homeland was located in present day Ukraine and around the steppes of Russia.

One part of the experts claims that they were Scandinavians. Another part considers them Polabian Slavs. Or rather, Rugii from Rügen and the surrounding area. Residents of the Novgorod Republic know for sure that they were descendants of immigrants from the western part of the Baltic States from the lands of the Polabian Slavs. After the forced Christianization, a huge number of Polabian Slavs went to Russia.

I am one quarter Sorb, living in America. It is very difficult to find decent videos on our history. This one is pretty good, though I would appreciate some citations of scholarly and primary sources. Perhaps it is helpful to not that, while the Catholic Church was greatly interested in converting the Slavs in the Northern Crusades (The first of which is the Wendish Crusade of 1147), rank-and-file crusaders and the Saxons and Danes more generally did not care whether or not their neighbors were Christian or Pagan. While Bernard of Clairvaux preached hellfire, those actually on campaign were more interested in territory and tribute. For firsthand accounts of the medieval western Slavs, see Adam of Bremen's History of the Archbishops of Haburg-Bremen, Helmold of Bosau's Chronicle of the Slavs, and Thietmar of Merseburg's Chronicon. All around, a good video. Thank you.

7:12 the colour of the horse was probably related to a worshiped god. The white horses were related to the 'overworld' deities (e.g. Svatevit, who is a god of abundance and war), and the black horses were related to the 'underworld' deities (e.g. Triglav, who by some scholars is associated with Veles, a god of waters, underworld, magic and oaths). The overworld and underworld are not the best terms here, but they are simple enough to get the sense of it. Also, some scholars think the Slavic priests of Arkona were purposefully covering the white stallion's legs with mud every single night, to prove Svatevit was riding his horse and fighting the evil spirits during the night 😄 Thank you for the video, I loved it. It contained a lot of well-researched information. I hope there will be more videos about the early Slavs from you in the future ☺️

Many Western Germans, too. Inherited from their polish ancestors, who migrated for work in the 19th century (examples: Schimanski, Koslowski). It isn't that easy. There was also a huge influx of refugees from today's Czech Republic during the early 18th century (similar to the one from France), and the resettlements after WW2 mixed up a lot, too. In Germany family names started to emerge in the 12th century. That's about the same time when Germany cleared out the last pockets of slavic resistance in today's Eastern Germany. In most of those areas, slavic languages fell out of use during the 15th or 16th century (except for Lusatia). Therefor most of the familiy names that you would point a finger at and identify them as "clearly slavic" are either of Polish or Czech, and for a very minor degree of Lusatian origin.

Most possibly White Croats were the tribal federation and not a single tribe. They originated in Western Ukraine (Galicia) and spread to the west on both sides of Carpathians - as west as Northern Czechia. White Serbs (ancestors of Sorbs) were their neighbours and the closest relatives - they lived more to the west in Eastern Germany. It is disputed whether Vistulians were the part of White Croat federation or Vistulians moved south and separated White Croats into two parts. White Croats might have their own state. They had two huge cities in Western Ukraine - Stilsko (possibly meant Stolny grad - the capital) and Plisnesko (the main Slavic sacred place in the region). Their counry was under influence of Great Moravia. Most possibly Hungarian resettlment significantly weakend White Croats - Hungarians captured their land to the South of Carpathians and made raids on their remaining territory. Poles from the west also tried to subdue them. But finally Rus' subdued them from the East. Recent linguistic studies unexpectedly show that there are many similar features in Ukrainian and Upper Sorbian (Ukrainan share more similar features with Upper Sorbian than with Polish and even with Belarusian) - we talk here not about lexics, but about specific morphological and phonetical features - e.g. only in Upper Sorbian and in Ukrainian the development of prothetic consonant -v happened in exactly the same place before pronouns - she (wona UpSrb vs wona Ukr), he (wón UpSrb vs win Ukr). And this is just one among many examples. This shows that there was an ancient White Serb - White Croat language continuum from Eastern Germany through Southern Poland (Upper Silesia, Lesser Poland, there are old maps were "Chrobatia" is shown in Poland near Lublin) into Western Ukraine (Galicia, Transcarpathia, Bucovina) but later territories were separated by Lechitic tribes and western part of that continuum developed West Slavic features while eastern part developed East Slavic features. You can read more about it here: www.quora.com/What-do-Ukrainians-Polish-Czechs-and-Slovaks-think-about-the-White-Croatia

Another example is Corsica, where French did not exist just 200 years ago and is now used by 2/3 of poipulation.

You look at XI century and up, Silesia was part of polish monarchy and Silesians were considered subpolish slavic tribe Over centuries region got owned by Czech. Czech got owned by austrian dynasty. And in the end Silesia ended up in Prussia and last in Germany. Did Poles just simply parrished? @@berserk9085 All the western slavic tribes were on the begining called Wends, Vinds or even Vandals because lived on the territories on which earlier lived germanic tribe Vandals (however there are theories that Vandals were not germanic but proto-slavic tribes). Before the 10th century part of them formed new european states and early nations of Bohemians and Poles what was the effect of christianisation of their rulers while the rest which was living between the rivers Elbe/Łaba and Oder/Odra remained pagan until their final conquest by all their neighbours: Germans, Danes and Poles. For many centuries the wendish tribes were able to scucesfuly resist all the attempts of conquests and christianisation attempted by neighbouring states until the 13th century when their own civil wars made them unable to defend themselves anymore. The Wends were eager raiders who were the nightmare to all their neighbours especially to Germans and Scandinavians, to less extent to the Poles with whom the shared both language, customs and for long also the same religion. They were also making alliances with all their enemies against other enemies (with Germans against Poles, with Danes against Germans, with Poles against Germans, with Poles against Czechs, with Czechs against Poles, with Czechs against Germans). Their tribes were sometimes forming federations and confederations which acted together but usually when one of the tribes was winning dominating position in their federation the rest was revolting against it and this what could have ended in the formation of new state and new european nation was ending in bloody civil war. It looks like that Wends were neglecting agriculture and because of that were forced to raid their neighbours both on land and on the sea for plunder. In fact they have dominated baltic sea and their wendish long boats were looking for the Scandinavian vikings returning home with boats full of loots and slaves. If it wasnt enough they were also raiding Denmark and Sweden to such extent that many areas on the scandinavian shores were completelly depopulated. For long time the whole baltic sea was called Wendish Sea or Rugian Sea (Mare Rugianorum) after pirate slavic tribe of Rugii who lived on the island Rugen. For the Wends the good leader was a such who was sucesfuly plundering other countries. Chronicler Saxo Grammaticus complained about Wendish pirates raiding Denmark and for long time to the Danes the good king was a such who could have defend the country from Wendish raids. When the Wends couldnt find better loot they were taking prisoners into slavery and selling such slaves on their own but also foreign markets (eg. Truso, Hedeby, Birka). @@berserk9085 In the book The Viking Art Of War (Chapter 'The Vikings and their neighbours), Paddy Griffith writes: "To the south-east of Denmark lay the Wends (Vends) or the Slav tribes, who were in many ways just as effective raiders and traders as the Vikings themselves". "The Slavs were always under threat of attack from the Vikings as well as the Franks." "They also gave as good as they got , in military terms, sacking Hedeby in 1000 and harrying Denmark, Gotland , Oland and southern Sweden to such an extent that the Western Baltic was sometimes called Mare Rugianorum after the Slavic pirates of Rugen and Western Slavic lands . The prevalence of treasure-hoarding in southern Sweden during the 1000s has led modern archeologists to believe that the threat was indeed a very serious one, and the Icelandic sagas themselves often seem to assume that "Vikings" in the purely piratical sense were almost as likely to be Wends (Vends) as Scandinavians.

@Hirquiticke Meldrop Thank you! Pardon me if I ask another question and then ponder a bit. I've since found (current experts' opinions) that R-z92 is not Germanic, but pre-Russian, so they may not have followed the Germanic migrations? That's why I was thinking Caucasus, or from the eastern steppes. Pondering: All the science on DNA is still a bit wonky, but modern dating puts R-z92 around 4,000+- ybp. That's some old DNA. How does it last 4,000 years without significant mutations? My mtDNA from Britain, K1b1b, is 12,000 ybp, +- 4k. Pre-Celtic, possibly indigenous, and possibly considered Black Irish due to olive skin and jet black hair. How do people end up with such ancient DNA? I would have thought it would be admixed by now. FWIW, the R-z92 and K1b1b make up 99.8% of my DNA. Between my 4k Y-DNA and my 12k mtDNA it freaks me out that my basic DNA was there before Christ, snd and even before the pyramids were built. Some say my Y-DNA is really R1a-z92, but 23 verified that my R was M207 so not R1a.

"Obr"/"obrzyd"/"olbrzym" - "a giant" was suppousedly a warrior-caste of Venedi/Suavi/Slavs that was breed with cows, eating raw meat and drinking blood (tatar-style) of young bulls to get heromones and steroids. Which isn't that far from the first of etymologies you read. I know that in Berlin, most settlements build by German colonists outnumbered the wends by far. Only 20-40% of historic (pre-industrial) localities in Berlin are traced back to slavic settlements, 2 of wich based on proper "grods" (slavic fortifications - Berlin-Köpenick and Berlin-Spandau), and the others where agrarian-/fishing villages. Most of these settlements where re-reintrgrated into "Kietze" (slavic parishes outside of German settlements) or completely abandoned/resettled and only a handful of slavic settlements continued 'untouched', (I.e. Berlin-Schmöckwitz or Berlin-Kladow) wich over the centuries became germanised. Berlin itself was founded by German merchants with the help of the wendish natives, to witch the polabian name ("Birlin" -> swampy place) is based on.

Modern Western interpretations of medieval sources would indicate the Slavic area as being the main reservoir of slaves in the whole period of the Early Middle Ages, beginning probably in the 6th century, and with a peak around the 10th. This preference for slaves of Slavic origin - so strong as to make Slavs the slaves by antonomasia - has been easily explained: in that period Slavic people were the only ones who were still pagan, and this detail is most important as it explains why, by choosing them, early medieval slave traders - mostly Venetian, Genoese and Jewish - did not violate the new principles of the “Societas Christiana”, introduced by Pope Gregory the Great at the end of the 6th century, according to which baptized people must be excluded from slavery. What should be noted is that aside from this being a mere theory, it is also historically and etymologically inaccurate, and unconvincing. After all, the Medieval Latin words for “Slav” and “Slave” are not etymologically related. The Medieval Latin word for “slave”, and with it, its root as well, predates the first sightings and contact of mainland European civilization with the Slavs. The evolution of the name of Slavs "Sloveni/ Slaveni" comes from PIE *klew (to hear) evolving into proto-Slavic *slovo/ *slava (word/ fame), finally evolving into Sloveni/ Slaveni (those glorious/ those who understand each other). Meanwhile, the English word for "slave" comes from the Latin word "clavis/ clavus" (a key/ nail), which bore the Latin word "inclavare" (to lock in), ultimately giving rise to the word "sclavus" (slave - "a locked one"), which most likely entered the English language, along with a major portion of Romance words, with the Norman invasion. In 1881, a proper etymology was expressed, according to which the Greek word Σκλάβινοι does not stem from the self-name of the Slavs, but from the Greek verb σκυλεύο - "to extract spoils of war", and resonates in the manner in which Slavs and other ethnicities were enslaved - as prisoners of war. The aforementioned etymologies are free of politicization, are accurate, and are firmly rooted in history and linguistics. Based on this, the self-name of the Slavs and their Modern Helleno-Latin name coincided phonetically purely accidentally (F. Kluge, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache 1881/1989/2002), and the thesis where the modern word for “Slave” is not rooted in the self-name of the Slavs, and is refuted.” (Gerhard Kobler - Deutsches Etymologisches Wörterbuch 1995, Korth Georg - Zur Etymologie des Wortes 'Slavus' (Sklave) 1970, and Daniel Scholten - Deutsch für Dichter und Denker: Unsere Muttersprache in neuem Licht, 2020). The aforementioned theory and etymology are furthered by Korth Georg, Friedrich Kluge, Gerhard Kobler, and Daniel Scholten (and Grimm’s German Dictionary). Further on, the cognate with Sloveni/Slaveni is the word Sclavinii/ Slabini, a Latin that denotes Slavic ethnic groups. From a purely historical perspective, Greece and Gaul were Rome’s main reservoir of slaves for centuries, while the Irish were the main reservoir of slaves for their Normano-English oppressors for more than half a millennium, and before them, to Norsemen as well. Dublin was the largest slave market in Western Europe. Its main sources of supply were the Irish hinterland, Wales and Scotland, while in the Far and the Middle East, the Turkmen tribes would supply the largest portion of Eurasia with innumerable slaves for nearly a millennium. Aside from that, just during the earliest stage of the Slavic invasion of Roman territory south of the Danube (6th century), a fifth of a million Roman citizens (Procopius) were enslaved by the Sclavenes (early South Slavs) in just one Roman province, and just during a single raid, the number of their slaves kept growing as more and more provinces and their capitals fell to the aforementioned Slavs. In reality, the majority of slaves in the 6th and 7th centuries were the Christian Romans, not their Slavic captors. Granted the Slavs didn't enslave their enemies permanently, but they've enslaved them nonetheless, and in numbers that are substantially greater than the number of Slavs who were enslaved by non-Slavs during the entirety of the middle ages, and it renders the aforementioned non-Slavs as being more fitting to have their ethnonyms made “synonymous” with slavery The Western terminology for "slave", to a certain extent, is similar in form to the self-designation of the Slavs ("Sloven", "Slavjan" etc.) Their existence served as the basis for numerous anti-Slavic statements, theories, and consecutive waves of propaganda, which have sometimes acquired the scope of genuine mythologies. Moreover, these ideas were even given an academic platform. As it happened more than once, when “not entirely” adequate premises gained an academic platform and were entrenched there since. The premise of "Slavs" is the root of words for "slaves" found a permanent foothold in Western Academia, giving rise to a series of pseudoscientific, inform, but questionable, in essence, representations and statements. The essence of these premises is that these words are related to the ethnonym of the Slavs, allegedly, "due to the fact that in the Early Middle Ages, the Slavs became objects of the slave trade, which led to the use of their ethnonym as a designation for slaves." Sometimes, it was even argued that Western Europeans, whose languages contain these words, directly, massively, and regularly turned the Slavs into slaves, and in general, other far-reaching conclusions were made, such as that the "Slavs are slaves" and the Western Europeans are "their masters." Moreover, in the 18-19th century in Western European journalism, the idea was persistently exaggerated that even the word "Slav" itself comes from the Latin or Greek word for "slave". This was the “think tank” of an 18th-century French historian and publicist. Polemics regarding this myth and premise are found even in Dostoevsky’s "Diary of a Writer". As for the idea of the origin of the word "Slav" coming from the word for slaves - at the present time, it is not considered scientific and has long been recognized as erroneous, or even deliberately Slavophobic. The birthplace of this terminology is the ERE. In the Early Middle Ages, in the so-called Medieval Greek, the word "σκλάβος" (read as "sklavos" - "slave") appeared. Further - from the ERE and Medieval Greek, this word found its way to Medieval Latin (and from there to Medieval French) - the official, as well as international legal, political, commercial, and scientific language of Western Europe. Moreover, in different languages, it appears in different timelines. In accordance with Webster's Dictionary, the word appears in English only in the 14th century, while Webster gives an etymological origin of the basis of the premise of this stream of Slavic slaves dating back to the 10th century, specifically during the reign of Henry the Fowler and Otto I, therefore moot and chronologically off by several centuries. Thus, the direct appearance of these words in Western European languages, for reasons allegedly of the abundant trade in Slavic slaves, is excluded. Since the word has a clearly traceable and understandable history. And it did not arise in the West, but in ERE. The word for “slave” in Medieval Greek derives from the Greek verb skyleúo - meaning “to get spoils of war”, the first-person singular of which looks like skyláo. This etymology is established thanks to the following sources: F. Kluge, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der Deutschen Sprache. 1881/1989/2002, siehe Sklave: “... zu gr. skyleuein, skylan, V. zu gr. Skylon ", Gerhard Köbler, Deutsches Etymologisches Wörterbuch, 1995, Sektion "Slaven" and Daniel Scholten, Deutsch für Dichter und Denker: Unsere Muttersprache in neuem Licht, Sklave und Slawe “. Thus, it is proven that the Greek word "sklav", "slave" - comes from the abovementioned Med. Greek word, the original meaning of which was "seized in war".This etymology, and Georg Korth’s "Zur Etymologie des Wortes 'Slavus' (Sklave)" refutes the premise that the Med. Greek and modern Western word for “slave” derived from the self-name of the Slavs. This etymology is furthered by Korth Georg, Friedrich Kluge, Gerhard Kobler, and Daniel Scholten (and Grimm’s German Dictionary). Furthermore, it turns out that the "Slavs" and all these numerous Western European "sklavas" are only homonyms. There are innumerable examples of such consonant coincidences (both within the same languages, and between words from different languages). This is a fairly common occurrence, especially among Indo-European languages. Thus, in the ERE, a new word was found and associated with the verb that means "to seize trophies of war", which was from then on used to denote slaves. At the same time, the previous word for slave, which previously meant slaves, was repurposed to denote indentured serfs attached to the land they’ve toiled..

There were some lost opportunities in early time. Great Moravia could reach Baltic see and unify all West Slavic tribes, but Hungarians destroyed this country. Great Moravians had settlements even close to Łęczyca... Other lost opportunity was not being to able for Polish kings to continue territorial gains by Bolesław Chrobry in 1003. Polish ruler controlled Lusatia, Czechia, Moravia and Slovakia. Veleti and Obotrites could be next. And probably the last chance was in 1300 when Wacław II controlled Czechia and most Poland.
