Galatia was a region in north-central Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) settled by the Celtic Gauls c. 278-277 BCE. The name comes from the Greek for “Gaul” which was repeated by Latin writers as Galli. The Celts were offered the region by the king of neighboring Bithynia, Nicomedes I (r. 278-255 BCE) and established themselves in three provinces made up of four cantons (wards) comprised of city-states (known as oppidum) governed, respectively, by the three tribes which made up the initial group: the Tectosages, Trocmil, and Tolistogogii.
The Galatian Celts retained their culture at first, continuing to observe their ancient religious festivals and rituals, but gradually became Hellenized to the point that they were referred to as Greek-Gauls by some Latin writers. They were conquered by Rome in 189 BCE, becoming a client state, but were granted a degree of autonomy under the reign of Deiotarus (“the Divine Bull”, r. c. 105-c. 42 BCE) after Pompey the Great (l. c. 106-44 BCE) defeated Mithridates VI (r. 120-63 BCE) of Pontus in 63 BCE and was later absorbed into the Roman Empire in 25 BCE by Augustus Caesar. It is best known from the biblical Book of Galatians, a letter written to the Christian community there by Saint Paul.

In Turkey today, excluding the Thrace (Rumeli) region and the eastern and central Black Sea regions (I mean Kipchak, Balkan and Caucasian origin Turks), the region (city) with the highest number of blond people is yozgat. Having blonde hair is a common feature among Yozgat Turks. At the same time, Yozgat is the city with the highest rate of red-haired people in Turkey. This situation BC. It is related to the Celts who came to Anatolia in the 300s and founded the Galatia kingdom in Anatolia. The Celts managed to preserve their language for a long time. Some of them took Greek names and became Greek. In the sources, the king of Galatia is mentioned in the Battle of Manzikert. When the Turks came to Anatolia, this people is not mentioned at all. These people did not suddenly disappear. They became Muslims and became Turkish. In other words, the Celts did not disappear, they still live in Central Anatolia (especially around Yozgat and Çorum). People who have traveled all over Anatolia will understand what I'm talking about.

Red hair was common in Inner Asia until the Middle Ages as well. It's not exclusive to Europe, nor is blond hair (West Asia also had both colors more frequently in the past). While there's obviously genetic heritage of the ancient Celtic emigrants in Turkey in the current populace, you're making some mistakes: 1. You're assuming the Celtic population is concentrated in the same region of Anatolia generation after generation despite multiple peoples and regimes coming and falling across a span of 2000 years. Those original Celtic genes obviously spread around and got diluted among the broader population. 2. You're spotlighting red and blond hair to signify its association with Celts in Northwest Europe today, but when Celts actually dominated Europe they were diverse in phenotype and genetics. Celts from Southern Europe were likely similar to modern Southern Europeans in skin and hair color. The Anatolian Celts had emigrated from the Balkan Celts, and were likely predominantly dark hair.

@@realtalk6195 there was a genetic study two years ago that Balkan Celts descend from Dacians and Celts from the Alpine mountains of Austria and Switzerland. And interestingly no Illyrian ancestry except in the Scordisci. So the Celts of Anatolia would look like whatever the fuck a Austrian and Romanian mix person would look like today and transplant this ethnic feature idea to a Daco-Gaul that us the Galatians and assume they looked like that.

I like the vibe on this celtic content. Adding up all the little known history and highlighting when the narrative might have been propagandized. It's fascinating, since most of my lifetime, ancient history was dominated by Hellenistic superiority, but the archeaology shows that despite the Celts not being empirical, as a group they dominated and held a massive region for a very long time. I can only hope we can learn more in the future.

Some Galatians still live in the north Caucasus. I don't know why they might have gone there. A year ago, I got a 45% Irish result in DNA research and started researching it. My Ancestors came from the North Caucasus to Turkey (1845) and they belong to a Highlander tribe of Chechen / Ingush origin. The name of this tribe is Аьккхий тайпана Akkiy a warrior tribe. Ingush's name is "Galgai / Galgoi" in their own language. In some ancient finds triple spiral symbols are quite common. I think the north Caucasus is a region that has received a great deal of Celtic immigration.

A tribe of warlike Celts migrating from Gaul on foot/horseback and making their way through present day Balkans, Greece and eventually crossing into present day Turkey and settling in the area of present day Ankara. @@davewatson309 Galatia is named for the Galatae and the Galat part of the name may be the same as caled meaning hard which appears in the Scottish Caledonii whose name probably means hard ones. Brenin is from Brigantinos meaning high, lofty, so Brennus is probably from a different origin. The British tribe Brigantes and the goddess Brigantia are related to brenin. The goddess Brigantia's name saw the n soften and the suffix dropped giving Brigat which is where the goddess name Brigit (St Brigit) comes from. Brennus probably comes from a Celtic word for raven and there is debate whether it's related to the Welsh name Bran which means crow.

Interesting that they would adopt the worship of Sabazios as their patron deity in Anatolia. It could be a good indicator to what primary deity the migrating Celts worshipped before settling in Galatia, as both Phrygian and Celtic peoples are Indo-European in origin, along with the Roman and Greek peoples that were heavily associated with both. Ambisagrus, a Gallo-Roman God could be a good contender. Both seem to be influenced by the thunder/striker and sky father archetypes and have association with War and horses and both were also associated with either Zues or Jupiter by Roman scholars of their respective times.

There are several theories concerning the origin of the name Galata. The Greeks believe that the name comes either from Galatai (meaning "Gauls"), as the Celtic tribe of Gauls (Galatians) were thought to have camped here during the Hellenistic period before settling into Galatia in central Anatolia;[citation needed] or from galatas (meaning "milkman"), as the area was used by shepherds for grazing in the Early Medieval (Byzantine) period.[citation needed] According to another hypothesis it is a variant of the Italian word calata, which means "a section of the docks of the ports intended for the mooring of merchant ships, for the direct embarkation or disembarkation of goods or passengers, for the temporary storage of goods and marine equipment",[1] since the neighborhood was for centuries a Genoese colony. The name Galata has subsequently been given by the city of Genoa to its naval museum, Galata - Museo del mare, which was opened in 2004.

Talking about vanguards and South America the San Patricios of the American Mexican war of the 1840's is a good example of what l was referring to. The San Patricios were lrish soldiers serving with the U.S who defected en masse to fight along side the Mexicans against the Americans. Why? Because l think that the U.S expansion which was lead by english speaking, anglo saxon prodestants into Mexico which itself was a non english speaking, non anglo saxon and non protestant country would have felt uncomfortably familiar to the lrish who were themselves maybe bilingual or spoke english as 2nd adopted/ coericed language but not indigenous english speakers and definitely not anglo saxon and non catholic. I think theres a similar story about Sri Lanka. Again in the 1840's, again another lrish regiment this time in the British army mutinyed and defected to the Sri Lankan side because to them, the Irish, this British imperial land grab/theft would have felt uncomfortably familiar. There is also the history of Irish regiments that fought in the French, Spanish and Austrian armies from the 18th to the 19th century. Theobald Wolfetone, the founding father of Irish Republicanism whoes aim was to replace the names of catholic, protestant and dissenter with the common name of lrishman was a general in Napoleon's army. Then there's Plaza O'Reilly in Havana Cuba named after another lrish revolutionary who lead a slave rebellion against the Spanish. So what l'm saying is not to make the mistake of associating the celts and their modern decendants; the lrish, Scots, Welsh, Manx, Cornish, Breton and Galicians with the english language or englishness in general.

The New Testament mentions the Celts of Anatolia- the Galatians. The Galatians, originated from the Belgae branch of the Celtic group and were one of the tree Celtic tribes that migrated to Asia minor in 277 BC. St. Paul converted the Galatians to Christianity, thus established one of the fist Church there. The Letter to the Galatians is an important historical record of early Christianity, in particular for the movements of Paul in the years following his conversion in Damascus. So Celtic people were among the very early Christians.

This historical timeframe, say 600 BC until the birth of Christ or 0 AD, is rather muddled in history. Of course you could say that our common written World history begins around 600 BC. Nonetheless, seeing some good research coming out of these cultures and their political powers during this time frame is fascinating. During the time of Gotoma the Buddha in northern India, there also were major societal upheaval‘s mostly due to the development of technology. And of note it appears the Buddha and his biological family were not Brahmins from the Arian culture from North West India. There were other groups in India vying for power during this time too. Of note, the defeat of Alexander, yes he was defeated by king Ashoka‘s grandfather no matter what western historians say, resulted in the Indo Greek kingdoms that had a great effect on Mesopotamia and Anatolia. And many of these cultures were more Indian then Greek, some practicing Buddhism. Thanks for another interesting video that is educational and NOT cartoon alien consciousness - ha!

Black represents sin (darkness), and the falling from heaven thing represents Satan who fell from heaven. The Kaaba (cube) is a cross folded up, and the cross is a cube opened up. The cross is a pagan symbol that the Bible forbids the use of for Hebrews and Christians but heretic Catholics and Protestants don't care what the Bible says. The cube as also seen in the Nintendo Gamecube and the black cubes in universities in the US and elsewhere, are all references to Saturn because that planet apparently has a hexagon on it which is a cube from an angle, and Saturn is the chief of the planets thereby representing the second most powerful entity after the sun which represents God (life and truth light giver). In the Mecca stadium are or are supposed to be 8 pillars around the cube, so if you connect the dots, you'll see a Templar cross, but it's actually just sharing with a Templar cross the connection to the Star of Ishtar (8 points) which refers to the land of Ishtar, Mesopotamia, land of the Tower of Babel when mankind united to try to conquer heaven (mis... lead by Satan). When Europe conquered the world, Templars did as proven by the Templar symbols in Portugal and other polities, and the Templars became the masons whose elites worship Satan which is why everywhere are satanic symbols in logos and movies and modern architecture including the pyramid that universally actually allude to the Tower of Babel.

@@alihanhaydar8369 Well... no offence but many people in Turkey believe that the ancient greek and roman ruins were built by ''ancient Turks'' and that the epic poet Homer was turkish because his name sounds like ''Omer''. So to put things straight. 1) Γαλάτης (Galatian) is not a name that the Kelts called themselves. Just like the Hellenes do not call themselves Greeks, or Yunan. It was a name attributed to them by Greeks and it means ''milk white''. Gala (Γάλα) means milk. Its also the root of ''Galaxy'' thats why its translated ''the milky way''. 2) Τhe area of Galatas was never inhabited by Kelts in order to name the bay after them. The original name of the area was completely different. It was called Συκεαί (Sykeae) = Fig trees. The full name was Peran en Sykeae (Πέραν εν Συκεαίς) = beyond/across in Sykeae. In time that name was abreviated simply to ''Peran'' (Across/beyond). 3) After 1261 the area of Peran became a Genovese trade hub. They walled the area and in 1349 they built the tower of Galatas and the whole bay was named after it. 4) Now pay attention because the accent marks are important. In Greek Galatians (Gauls) = Γαλάτες, milkman= Γαλατάς. If we want to say Gaulish that would be Γαλατικός Galatikos. I rest my case.

In fact it was so important that was given the status of Opidum, built theaters, baths and most important of all, there were built six oficial roads connecting the roman empire, the most important was the Geira road conecting Braga to Rome, where from mile to mile there is an heavy cilinder mark with the name of each emperor and the distance from Rome. www.google.com/search?q=citania+de+briteiros&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=IAZ8G1-deAF6gM%252Cc3EoIeZ98zxPEM%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kRU4CgBXadPAk5FqvKdffMWwsGv1A&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjv3snZlvLvAhWJlxQKHX2UAPMQ9QF6BAgOEAE&biw=1366&bih=657#imgrc=zU0uN73aOwxkrM

Sorry but you are generally incorrect. Galatia in Turkey was a well-known Celtic/Gaelic territory in existence well after the birth of Christ, and most importantly the name 'Galatia' was never a Greek or Turkish word, although they too would've used it to refer to this territory of the Gauls. Nearby Galatia is the town of Miletus, whose Celtic inhabitants were called Milesians. Milesian is also the name of the first truly Celtic invaders of Ireland, whose own annals claim sailed to Ireland from Spain after leaving the Greek Near East in more ancient times.

st.jerome mentioned in his works that peasants in galatia spoke similar to peasants in the vicinity of trier. therefore celtic language must have survived in parts of galatia until ca. 400. around ca.600 all non greek languages in anatolia except the armenian language, were extinct. when the turks invaded anatolia there were non celtic speakers.

@dinos9607
@dinos9607 3 жыл бұрын
The pillage and destruction of Delphi by the Gauls is not proven historically. Ancient sources do not mention it and only indirect Roman urban legends refer to some fabled "Delphi loot" circulating among the Gauls. Greeks, who should be the first to mention, do not mention any such. Archaeologically we don't see anything. Gauls were already stopped at Thermopylae and their concurrent western campaign into Aetolia failed also losing horribly the battle near Delphi. We also have the victory column of the Aetolians in Delphi commemorating the victory, as such there is no such possibility of the Gauls having had looted the Delphi. The Delphi had actually been looted a century before by the Phocians who used the loot to raise a massive, for their own measures, army of 20,000 men, twice.

I agree. Academic work should meet a higher standard. Besides, Wikipedia includes the pronunciation of names of practically every person and place named in this documentary. I'd also ask for more relevant illustrations. Good photos of Anatolia abound, so when talking about Pergammon, Sardis, Phrygia, Bithynia, etc. it would be appropriate to show photos from there instead of generic photos and 19th century Viking illustrations that have nothing to do with those sites. Appropriate pictures of those places are not difficult at all to find online. That said, I appreciate very much the effort. I lived in Ankara for many years, and agree that there is little mention of Celtic peoples, being overshadowed by the imposing history of Hittites, Phrygians, Greeks and Romans. Thanks for bringing this subject to light.
