I wonder if that divider is so high because it was measured without the playmat, which defeats the purpose.

Tables with leafs usually have pins and holes to keep them from sliding. Veneer chips. Real wood splits or chips differently. Older USB ports are slower than the new ones. The leaf bags appear to bea design flaw. No one considered wear from usage.

I am a wave 0 Wyrmwood Modular Table owner. It’s not perfect, as its one of the 1st tables they built. But overall love the system. Not sure I could handle the issues your describing. The ability to quickly remove the topper is critical. I keep my active campaign game in the vault and use the topper to play one shots. Sorry hear the Origins table is not working out for you.

I was looking into a board game table a long time ago when Geekchic was in business. And at the time, the entry price for their tables was $3500. I thought that was insane. Fast forward 4-ish years and I happily pledged for a Wyrmwood Modular Game Table. I went with one of the more expensive woods and it cost me quite a bit more than what you paid for this table. No veneer or stain, just solid exotic hard wood. I feel like I made a good choice. I’ll see how it holds up after a couple years. Board game tables are definitely not cheap.

I wasn’t looking to buy when the wyrmwood modular table kickstarter was going, and they were so backed up by the time I got around to looking that I passed just based off the wait time. I’m very happy with my origins, but got to compare it to the various wyrmwood modular tables at gencon last year and if everything were equal that’s what I would have gone with. If I’m still gaming when my kids move out maybe I’ll take a look at getting something like the Prophecy haha 😆

This is a big one because I think a lot of folks would try to save money by using this as both a gaming and dining table. The leaves in theory should be far less expensive than buying a second dining table. The leaves moving around like this would be annoying just when playing a game. Imagine if they move and knock over a gravy boat that spills everything onto the playing surface below. Especially if you have something saved down there.. For a company that's been making these tables for >10 years I'd expect a greater attention to detail of real world use cases.

Great video. I too backed it and my initial review was it was great. I have the same issues as you have described, but I was able to alleviate some because I put the table up on 8 inch risers. My previous table was bar height so you could stand or sit on bar bight chairs. Definitely a plus when playing some of the longer games we like! Because the table is raised, the bench works great. Obviously not a solution for everyone, but wanted to share. Great work bud!

I recently purchased the origins table directly from their website for about $4500 and they have fixed the sliding leaves (they lock into each other and there are magnets inside them) and the dividers are flush with the tabletop. If you decide to purchase from them you should stop there and get only those 2 things because... The bench is still too high and incredibly hard and uncomfortable. They do sell a storage ottoman now in which the leaves are stored vertically which seems more practical so I wish I had got that instead. I ordered the American Walnut color but it is NOT stained it's spray painted. My whole house stunk of spray paint for a week and you can see spots in the grain texture where the paint wasn't applied evenly. The tiered trays accessory that sits inside the table legs end-cap is pretty much useless because it straight up falls right off the table when you open the trays due to it's weight and basically nothing to anchor it in place. The dice tower is a neat idea but if you bump it it's also going overboard, and because it's wood it's loud as shit when you throw dice into it so I'll have to glue some felt inside it to reduce the noise. The neoprene mat quality was really disappointing, the little mats that go into the wells around the edges aren't all uniform so some don't fit, the mat for inside the table was cut poorly and slightly too big so it pops up around all the edges, and the giant mat for use on top of the leaves was stretched out in some places so it won't lay flat and there are tears in the neoprene along the edge stitching (the large mat was $100 too so I'm not at all pleased with the quality of it). I would still have to recommend their tables though because the alternatives are either seriously lacking in design and style or are like over $10k. Unfortunately America isn't quite there yet on decent gaming table options.

This video makes me really glad that I purchased a Wyrmwood table and not the Origins table. There isn't a large enough price difference for me to have gone with Origins or Rathskellers or any of the other brands that have come out over the years. I trust Wyrmwoods quality and the modular gaming table brought the price down into the competitive range of these other guys. You and I paid essentially the same price for our respective tables (mine was around $3300 including shipping and accessories) to give some perspective on that. The customer service and craftsman's promise over at Wyrmwood is also a selling point for me giving how much these tables cost. Also, to be fair to Origins, the stain pen they are sending you is a viable solution to have the wood color matched. Personally, I'd want that leaf replaced with that much chipping, but the stain pens are good for fixing gashes or large scratches in the topper if that should ever happen.

After watching this I have no idea why these are being purchased. The design choices with things like the bench, it’s obvious they aren’t putting any though5 into the design. I have 2 Wyrmwood tables and I love them. I have none of these type of problems. The problem with the Origins is it’s a poker table that sticks out so much in a house. The Wyrmwood isn’t just functional, but they look great. That and their customer service is second to none.

Thanks for the review! I got nearly everything you got, and feel similarly even though overall I’m happy with the table itself. The next step up at the time of backing more than doubled the cost or tripled the wait time, so Ultimately I feel it was worth it for me. If I were doing it again I’d get the table, topper, playmats and matching mini playmats, and two dice towers. If they’d been available, I’d probably just get a Wyrmwood modular table.

Man I'd be heart broken, $3500 on a table that clearly isn't tested for how its intended to be used. I spotted the issue with the table topper at the start of the video before you mentioned it, its a clear issue and would be a deal breaker for someone as clumsy as I am. The bench and the USB access clearly show this was designed as a product looking to exploit the market rather than by gamers looking to produce something they'd use themselves. The covering on a table like that is sickening, absolutely not, it should be solid wood nothing else at that price. Thank you for this review it is honest product reviews like this that save other backers from heart break on an investment like this. This should be a highlight purchase for gamers like this, not something that leaves you filled with regret and sadness

I got the version 1 of this table backed through kickstarter. I was grateful to sell it as it just didn't fit our needs. The most egregious part of the table was the spray used for the American Walnut color. Game Theory Tables went through the trouble of using real wood, but did not use actual wood stain, which would look SO much better. The origins table completely stuck out in an awful way against my other walnut furniture. And as you mentioned, because it's not a real stain, it can chip! And the leaves are horrendous. I gave them video feedback where I showed how easily a Jenga tower would fall on the table with the leaves on. It looks like they improved the leaves significantly for the version 2 of the table. I do wonder if the 4 inch well is just a fundamentally flawed concept. It requires bad posture to use it. My back was so sore after trying to use the table for large jigsaw puzzles. Maybe for a game in which little interaction happens in the game itself? For someone with an actual house and room for a dedicated gaming room (and it would have to be a large gaming room), I can see the origins table working, as long as they didn't need the leaves. You're right on the money that without accessories this table is quite good. There's someone out there who's needs fit this table exactly, it just wasn't me. For our small condo, we ended up replacing our over $2k Origins table with a $350 IKEA Norden table. (6 built in drawers, both sides of the table are collapsible. AMAZING space saving. And we added casters, wheels, to make it easy to move the table in and out). We are absolutely ecstatic about the space savings of the new table. The $650 IKEA Strandtorp table was also a top contender for us. The leaves are incredibly lightweight, and they all fit inside the table itself, and the table can extend to fit 8 people (for dining). The Strandtorp could likely fit 6 people gaming comfortably. Maybe a decade from now, if I have an actual house with lots of square footage, I can see getting a dedicated gaming table. But regular tables might actually be better.

I think the wrymwood topper holder is a superior way to hold the toppers. This looks like way too much work. I also think well is too deep (too bad no inches in the review you should consider that the next time you do one. not a bad review. just a thought). I also don't understand why the toppers can't be thinner to reduce weight. Interesting review.

If the leaf sections are heavy, it's not solid wood. MDF and chipboard is actually heavier with all the added glue weight and compressed bits make it more dense. Not that there's anything wrong with veneer, the leaves are less prone to warping than solid wood, but you definitely have veneer over some sort of engineered substance if it's heavy.

Great video. I really like you commenting on the depth of the vault. I've been curious about this. I currently have a Jasper Long table with a 2.25" vault I think and I think that one is 4". I know wyrmwood does a 4.5" vault. I thought it was cool how you could store taller in progress games, but always wondered if the depth of that would hinder reachability, especially on a wider table like this.

I got this table from the last KS, the leaves, and the bench. I agree that if you just grab the table then it's very good for the price. I like how substantial it is and the felt playing surface is the best thing to play a board game, period. Way better than Wynwood's playing surface. And that is what sold me on the table. I am happy with the base table. The play surface isn't too low for me, but I'm also over 6 foot. Hasn't been a problem anyone has mentioned that has played at my table. And I haven't seen any damage to the table yet. I've had it all set up for about four months. I had issues with all of the accessories as well. The leaves slide and on my table the leaves don't sit flush with the corner caps. There is a couple millimeter drop-off at the caps. And my bench top came damaged. And a handle on a leaf bag broke the first time I used it. Customer Service has worked well with me and has made it so I don't completely regret my addon purchases. Good review. It's a good table, I have enjoyed my time with it. Addons are cool ideas, but poorly executed. Stick to the base table and maybe leaves now they have fixed the sliding issue in the second KS. JP

Thank you for this review! I am really considering backing this on their current season 2 Kickstarter. I am happy to hear they have addressed some of the issues you've mentioned, specifically the sliding top covers. Unfortunately when I asked about the bench, their answer was... "the height of the bench is the lowest it can possibly be while still keeping it's intended functionality. Quite a few benches have shipped already and for the most part it's been well received as you don't actually sit with the bench under the table, it's usually pulled out to accommodate players legs." I am obviously still on the fence about the bench. Overall, do you like your table? Or would you recommend to just get a regular large size table? Again thanks for making this very detailed video.

As I kind of mentioned at the end I would still recommend the table at the base level because the playing surface "the speed felt" is very nice and high quality. Everything else about the table is pretty mid tier and doesn't really feel craftsman. If the overall aesthetic of the table works with your style then it should be fine. I personally was unimpressed with all or the accessories I received. (Except the neoprene mats those are nice.)

So I did slide it under the table for storage during play, but people kept hitting their toes on it. We just don't taken the topper off anymore and leave the bench at our dining table
@firechickenreviews

That bench is both an interesting yet odd design. Not only adding to the time to basically sleeves your leaves before putting away but never really seen many benches laid out so only leaves can go in. Versus companies allowing you to have a bench to put accessories or leaves in and a side accessory to store leafs upright or potentially under the table itself for ease of storage. Looks like it needs a redesign completely or alternatively people have to be fine with it being a limited use and likely highly expensive accessory since it's not doing what most would be expecting for said bench. Checking their new KS looks like no change in design which is unfortunate so great your advising on the various issues with it that I suspect many will have. Sorry to hear overall that the Table overall isn't meeting your needs as we all recognize just how expensive these things are and how long we wait to even get them.

Consider raising the feet so that the entire table is higher. If the rails aren't too high, the vault would be at a similar height to the original top.

@@GameBrigadeyeah, that’s actually my primary concern as well. That’s why I don’t like toppers, even though a few of them look amazing. The table is already at the correct height, so by placing a topper on top of it it’s now too high. Thanks for the awesome video, by the way. Liked and subbed.

The Origins was at the top of my "interested in" list when I purchased, because it looks good in so many areas. It seems the company just did not think very hard about some of the things they offer. To not mention how useless the bench is for being an actual bench "at" the table is just a purposeful oversight on their part. The USB ports are clearly in a spot that makes me realize the company never tested these tables themselves. And don't get me started on the toppers. That's just pathetic to have them sold the way they are. Glad they addressed some of (1 of?) the issues. They need to address them all, and advertise them appropriately!! With all that said, I was considering just the base table, no topper, no USB, and no bench. That would have been perfect for me, with none of those problems. With that said, I shy'd away from the table due to the width of the arm wrests. As nice as it is to have a place to put cards and/or game pieces, 5" separating you from the table is just too much...especially considering the depth of the vault. Cost was also a consideration for me. I ended up going with a Watson GameTopper and it's been perfect. It's portable, so I can bring it to friends houses, or simply store it away, the vault is not as deep (though some may consider this a negative), and the arm wrests keep me close(r) to the playing surface. The downside is that I had to buy an adjustable height folding table to get the height of the topper right (personal preference). I didn't want it sitting on top of an already perfectly tall table, making it harder for the kids to sit at. So, it's not on my main dining room table, but that's what I wanted.

Honestly just look at the leaves, you could screw a couple of shims on either side so that the shims are inside the well when you place the sleeve down. That would 100% fix any simple slide. It might not be super attractive if you left it bare wood, it would also prevent it from working in your bench. I have my own wood shop where I think it just be simpler and cheaper to just make it myself than buy there brand. Some of the faults that you described on your table makes it seem like you got one of the first prototypes, its hard to believe some of those functional flaws wouldn't have been found through QA. I have a feeling the reason your seeing such slow charge times, is instead of 4 independent chargers its really 1 usb charger that has been split into 4 chargers, that go off to the various legs of the table. This in turn would take it from a 3.1 amp charger per station to about .775 amps which would probably take you from a 60 min charge to a 4 hour charge, no easy fix for that, I'm afraid.
@GameBrigade
@GameBrigade 2 жыл бұрын
I would tend to agree with you regarding the prototype vs production, but would you believe they ran a pre production campaign before the one I got? that one had a lot of issues with the veneer coming off or splits in the wood. I should have noticed the issues from the KS page. I hope my video helps people make a good purchasing decision.

The moving leaves....this seems like something that should have been spotted quickly during trials of this version of the table....I could not imagine that would frustrate me so much like it does for you I can't fathom how it got a thumbs up. Hopefully you can reach out or get contacted by various other gaming table creators to help reduce the cost of your next table...honestly just watching your review with you noting you only use the actual gaming table aspect 10% of the time...I would likely myself have gone back to my regular dining room table as it just sounds like a frustrating burden....
@GameBrigade
@GameBrigade 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think I made it clear as to why we don't use the gaming table part. It's mostly because the leaves are so heavy, there isn't a good way to store them, so it's easier to just leave them then try and figure out what to do with them.
@firechickenreviews
@firechickenreviews 2 жыл бұрын
I think it was actually fairly clear as you noted how heavy a few times in the video, further by noting the storage solution options given was just not great. The limited higher quality gaming tables I have seen seem to recognize this issue and instead offer more leaves instead of just 4, I think my table is like 7 leaves and I can store them with one hand (though most shouldn't do this). My comment was more so like my channels name being too fired up to even wanting the table in my house...but just seeing that table damage you showed off and how cheap the wood looks...I go on I think your video will help steer or allow at least heavy caution to potential future backers to avoid the table and with the notes on customer service I wouldn't personally deal with the company myself.

Just mark the table down, sell it, eat the loss. I'd say, if you can fix some of it, like adding rubber pads, or the felt pen, which works, and is the 'ghetto solution', but it works, put it on Facebook marketplace or some such as I'm guessing there is no refunds. There are other solutions obviously, but that might be the best one for you. I know I'd be very upset, but if you can get at least 2k back for the table as part of the other issue is you didn't know how much you'd like or want a gaming table, and it looks like not so much, but other groups or owners might really like/use that gaming well area. That is not the companies fault, that is just your personal taste and your groups. What you discovered is how semi-useful a gaming table might actually be. I'm sure Quackalope won't do a video on that topic, since his videos are basically Ads for the kickstarter, not videos like your making where he gives honest reviews. Just saying. I was thinking of buying one of these tables and I am going to rethink my decision. I haven't spend a penny on it yet, but if I do buy it, I know what i'm getting myself into.

most gaming tables for me and the way my players play have edges that are too thin. I am looking at the carolina gaming tables that have 11" side so that we can have our papers on it. Sorry you are that disappointed and dont use the inside. the other thing i was thinking of getting was just a large table that is wider than the one we use now. so many of the table are designed for board games and not D&D type games that I would never buy one. Or they have all these additional items to make their table a better fit :(

Let's be honest... This isn't a 6/10. This is fucking shocking and Origin should, at the very minimum, be sending you a new leaf, a refund on the badly designed bench and better inserts. They should be ashamed to see this. If I can give you some advice, plywood will raise the bed without too much added weight, and screwing some wooden blocks to the underside of the leaves, so they rest inside the well, will stop them sliding. You should also get someone to rip you some dividers that fit and paint them black. Looks like a cheap veneer table, barely worth $500, let alone $3,500.

You’re 100% correct. I gave it that score mostly because it still does function as a table at its core, but it’s one of my worst experiences buying something like this. I did contact Origins and they sent me some paint to cover up the chip marks and a new playmat… like that fixes anything.
