American gun culture is an amazing thing. Most countries with gun cultures trace theirs back to a need for an armed and trained populace in times of war, but as much as Americans may claim theirs to be the same, that is not technically true.

Our gun culture is also influenced by our history. We were born as a nation out of private gun owners. The first battle of our revolution was started because the British tried confiscating our guns at Lexington and Concord. I feel like Kraut's conclusion also fails to take into account the ways that gun culture and automobile culture are interrelated. Even as more and more Americans are getting priced out of home ownership, 90%+ of the country owns a car, with many people using said car for shelter either during a period of transition or as a result of homelessness. And you'd better believe the idea behind "get off my property" applies just as much to someone telling a stranger "get away from my car". Hell, in many states, the car you own is considered to be your legal abode, and is thus subject to Castle Doctrine. This entire concept of "self defense from a car" is actually at the center of my own foray into gun ownership.

They might, in America, move to the more rural parts where rent and property is cheaper. Thus bringing demand for services with them. We are by no means oppressed, just in a time of less economic mobility. Programs like UBI and reinvesting top level money into the bottom economy will help to get capital flowing again for at least as long as it takes for a more fundamental change. I think that the point in the video was being made at a social policy level. People who dont own property can still own guns because USA has such unique gun culture. From a traditional American context it makes sense for a population of land owners to own guns so they can manage large acres of wildlife and protect their rights on said land. But as times have changed does it really make sense to put a gun in every hand of a population of indebted, 9-5 working people, many of whom live in tight communities with large populations. And in time people in the US may reconsider the reasoning for free gun ownership when it is no longer mainly a tool to manage and project property rights. As for home and self defense: public safety and violent crimes are issues in every society- guns or no guns. There are many countries that have better public safety and less crime rates than even the safest states in the US and it is never achieved through gun policies(pro or not). So is the debate on guns really relevant when it comes to robberies rates and public safety? thats definitely another topic on its own but it takes much more than just gun policy to make society safer.

I think there's a line of reasoning worth exploring that one's self is the ultimate private property. I own firearms , ultimately, to protect my self, the body which houses my consciousness. Anyone violating my other property is ultimately a bodily threat to me, and will be dealt with in kind.

Something that is integral to the functioning of a government and its sovereignty is that they have a complete monopoly on force. It's only legal for the government to use force to obtain what they want. The American idea of guns is deeply connected to their immense distrust of the government at its core. Having the right to weaponry ensures that the state never **completely** has a monopoly of force and are constantly aware that they don't. As many people mock the idea of a civilian uprising and the unlikelyhood that it would ever happen, the idea that the state never has a complete monopoly on force has promoted a healthy and stable American democracy when Europe was in shambles. There were no dictatorships that ever formed in the United States. There were never any military coups that were successful. All this even before the American state was strong enough to become a world power. The military knew that enforcing its well on the people from outside was a fool's errand with an armed populace and as such was always subserviant to the civilian government. Though it took out this aggression on foreign countries, where it had more power. As an American, you protect what is yours, including your rights and liberties. Such things you were never given by your government, but what you had already, and which you *force* the government to respect via its restrictions and the constitution.

The point in the second amendment was so the public could fight against a tyrannical government. The first battle in the civil war was over the British trying to confiscate guns. Many of us gun owning Americans are seeing what you've pointed out. The development(through natural means or through intentional manipulation) of a serf class. We see it not just in big cities, but even out in smaller more rural areas. This is giving rise to an ever growing Paleo-Conservative movement of Americans who desire a vastly more limited government, and strict adherence to the Constitution. The serfs and their masters oppose us at every turn. While we were sitting back, growing more and more complacent, they were busy changing our society on every level. Creating an abomination of what America once was meant to be. It is a good thing we have, for the most part, kept our guns even as property ownership has declined. We will need them shortly.

It's not absolute, there's a fifth article of the constitution dedicated to how it can be altered to meet the realities of a changing world, imbuing our govt with the means to evolve to serve the people as their needs, security, and interests change. A static govt would become irrelevant and disenfranchise it's populace quickly. That said, a right to self defense necessitates a right to firearms. Although I don't find it onerous to limit some expressions of that right for the public safety (automatic weapons, missiles, armed drones, etc) and I think there's a good argument that should be made for legal requirements for the responsible exercise of that right (gun locks, legal training, use training), as I don't think there's anything inherent about gun ownership that assures the responsible use of them.

I the United States there is a well established tendency to not only use firearms to defend your home, but also to carry then outside the home for protect from violent crime. People who live in cities and have a well established police presence tend to be opposed to private gun ownership, even though these are the areas where a person is most likely to be victimized by violent crime. I suppose the idea is that if a city forbids the bearing of arms, the criminal element will adhere to it and voluntarily disarm themselves.

Very good video and fair analysis! I think in addition to property, there’s an interesting dynamic of protecting family, which is a split take. Some want firearms in the house to defend their families, others in urban and suburban settings feel that guns *are* the danger because you’re more likely to injure or kill a family member due to firearm use incompetently. Speaking as a suburbanite, our highly educated/specialized society has a tendency to believe that a lot of things are far more complicated than the really are, and hence DIY mentalities (including your own security) is discouraged

I don't see the gun culture of America changing except within metropolitan areas. Out here in the most rural states of America, the tighter regulation gets in big cities and blue states, the less regulated we become. Maybe it's because there is still property to be owned being produced or sold, but I'm more inclined to believe our love for the second amendment is due to protection of our communities and our republic, be the threat from outside nations attempting an invasion (which would be suicidal and/or genocidal) or potentially the tyranny of the state or federal government. The Michigan Militia, however misguided it became, started from the idea of fending off tyranny.

Leon Sullivan I'm sorry but the threat of invasion for a reason of gun ownership as stated in the video only exist in countries that actualy has that fear. No americans has had the fear of being invaded as such the reason for holding a gun is not because of that. Protecting family and property has often been the most important thing for gunowners. Not the stereotypical "to protect myself against tyranny" when someone buys a guns they first and formost think of themself. Switzerland for example is a nation with many people owning guns to this day even. And that is because of always being in the middle of Europe where wars was always in the past often. For Switzerland where threat of invasion was much more and the fact of being neutral made gun ownership important because the idea of getting invaded was actualy fucking real.

Now those who can afford to " buy" a house are those that have a lot of money because they can leverage their possessions to afford a high price item, usually houses are bought to put in renters who are needed to pay the monthly mortgage payments. So you end up with overinflated housing that the average person can't afford especially if young and with high rent price because everyone is renting since they can't buy property. So you end up with a few who can acces the low interest rate debt becoming very rich and those who can't are forced to take overinflated rents. Because our countries are running on debt is why we see the bigger and bigger divide between rich and poor, since the wealthy can access the chap money and buy property at prices before the inflation kicks in

What most people don't understand about gun control is that control only works for law-abiding citizens. If someone robs a bank, do you they care about the speed limit on the road? Guns also help by making the government listen to the people. Most politicians who make gun laws will not walk out on the street without a bodyguard with them, so why can't people defend themselves with the same guns that defend politicians?

One thing you didn't mention, that is fairly important in that it helps explain our American mistrust of gun control. The Battle of Lexington and Concord started because the Brits were marching on the town to seize the rebellious Colonialists guns; it was the first act of gun control attempted in America. It's the genesis of the 2A; the founders wanted to ensure that such an effort wouldn't be attempted again, and it's why you will hear it said that the point of the 2A isn't hunting, or even personal protection, it's so we can defend against a tyrannical government.

Austria does not have a large unprotected land border with Mexico. The amount of illegal good that come across that border would mean that no matter how harsh the gun laws in the United States, that criminals ( those who do not follow the law) will get weapons. This is made even more likely by the fact that the political party that wants stricter gun laws and less police also supports less protection for the Mexican border. Laws only apply to law abiding citizens who are those pose no threat to anyone because the follow the law.

One huge mistake I see almost every non-american make when arguing about American gun culture is that we have very little gun regulation. In reality this could not be further from the truth. The amount of regulation over every conceivable aspect of gun design and gun ownership is mind-boggling to the point of ridiculousness. Everyone thinks that all these tragedies keep happening and nothing changes. Wrong. Law after law after law keeps getting passed banning or mandating every single possible thing you can imagine. Limits on magazine capacities, bans on certain types of stocks, minimum barrel lengths, restricted muzzle devices, felonies for certain modifications, mandates to have gimmicky safety devices such as the infamous "bullet button" installed, wait-listing for the opportunity to purchase a firearm, barring of people with a history of (insert behavioral or mental abnormality here) barring of purchasing a gun for another person, more thorough background checks, regulation of SBRs, PDWs, SMGs, ARs, LMGs GPMGs, bringing a gun across state lines, how you store your weapon, where you can store it, under what circumstances you're allowed to use it, transferring or selling your firearm, registering your firearm, what classification that firearm falls under, if that firearm is retroactively re-classified by some new law, needing a lawyer to help you understand how or if open carry laws conflict with gun-free zones, having to constantly keep up to date with your state's gun laws vs another states gun laws. (In texas you can have almost any kind of gun you want other than a machine gun or an explosive munition ((and even then you can jump through several years of hoops to apply for those with the right permits and money)) but in places like New York it's practically impossible to purchase a firearm period. Despite this maddening myriad of hard line laws specifically designed to frustrate the lives of gun owners at literally every turn almost none if these make any significant change to the levels of violence in the US. And again, violating almost any of these regulations immediately constitutes a felony, so suffice to say that the threat of law has been thoroughly and agonizingly proven to not be a deterrent to gun violence. The problem put simply is twofold: Proliferation of arms, and culture. America has more guns per capita than any other country on earth and a not insignificant portion of our economy and culture is based around those weapons.

I think a lot of what you pointed out was right on the money. I would just add that while it may have started out based more on property/land, it's quite a bit more that than just the ground you own. it's your possessions as well as your life. Just look at the different doctrines around self defense ie castle, stand your ground, duty to retreat. The idea that your well being is kinda in your own hands, vs depending on the state to look out for you is a big part of American culture. Also there are pretty huge swaths of that that are very rural, that often have large predators. I would wager there's more Americans that personally know of someone that had a dangerous animal attack than someone who was involved in a mass shooting.

@@ratofvengence Don't look at states, look at localities, as that's where the overwhelming majority of both policing policies and gun control policies are made. You'll find Democrat-run cities with a lot of gun control to dominate the leaderboard. The problem with doing things by state is as follows: I live in Pennsylvania, where Democrats control the cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and Republicans control the rest of the state for the most part with a few exceptions. The population between the "red" and "blue" areas of PA is about equal. The overwhelming majority of all the violent crime in the state happens in either Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. "Red" and "Blue" states also don't necessarily correlate with policies on guns. for example, Northern New England (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine) are all very much blue states, but also have some of the most lax gun laws in the country. Likewise, some Southern red states still have racist gun control laws on the books from back when the Democrats were trying to disarm black people.

One of the few ways to prevent an otherwise legal gun owner from owning a gun is if a landlord bans guns on their property. In my state, any private landlord can ban guns on their property. As an American who owns firearms, the fact that this origin story is only 7 minutes long is terrifying me before I've even played the video. I'll say though that my fascination with guns started in my youth with my fascination for engineering in general. The idea of lobbing a projectile at high speed with such a simple device is a great technical feat and I've always wanted to build my own (which is legal here). I also own guns just because they are so much fun! Going to a range in the desert and setting up clay pigeons, pumpkins, and explosives to shoot at is fun and rewarding as you develop precision and compete with friends. Plus there is the historical and cultural legacy that guns were how the founding fathers prevailed against an empire and to me we need to keep our right to own guns both in symbolic and functional defiance of tyrants. Ideally we'll never need to, but the continuous pushes to remove those rights only makes our leaders that much more suspicious.

Everything you've said is pretty spot on to my feelings on firearms. I had the same fascination growing up as you did. Generally I preferred older firearms such as early repeating guns of the mid to late 19th century, how they evolved to use cartridge ammunition, and how the first semi-autos and even full-autos were developed. In my opinion, modern "tacticool" firearms are incredibly boring to me. It's much more interesting from a historical standpoint thinking about all the technological innovations that were the great grandfathers of the guns that we see today. Aside from that, I own firearms for protection and hobby/collection. The former being the most important reason for owning a gun. On top of that, it's a symbol of independence and freedom. When that symbol gets taken away, so does what they symbolize.

I agree. I'm from India, which has very restrictive gun laws. But I believe true freedom can never be achieved unless and until every citizen is armed, and therefore, the government fears every citizen.

"Less constraining laws on private gun ownership" *Canada: You know what? Semi-automatic rifles are scary let's ban more then 1,500 of them. We should also ban the sale of Handguns.*
@crabyman3555
@crabyman3555 3 жыл бұрын
to be fair, semi-auto rifles are a quite a new phenomenon considering how long history of guns has been around. That ban still didn't change the core concept : you can still get guns in Canada rather easily (maybe not all types, but plenty powerful to kill people and better than your grampa ever could)
@Generik97
@Generik97 3 жыл бұрын
@@crabyman3555 Does Canada have less constraining gun laws in comparison to somewhere like the UK and even the majority of Europe? Sure. Are semi-automatic rifles relatively new in the grand scheme of things only really starting to see mass adoption mainly after World War 2? Yes. But I genuinely don't believe it's the state's place to tell me what I can and can't own especially if it's arbitrary and If I'm a law abiding gun owner who hasn't done anything wrong with no criminal history.

@@Generik97 As a Canadian, I see no problem with the ban. Realistically, why would you need a semi-auto rifle when a pistol serves you well? If you need to hunt deer or other animals, get a bolt action or a shotgun. If you're looking to defend yourself from dangerous people, a concealed pistol can serve that purpose excellently. There's just no reason to carry a 30-round magazine loaded into a proper semi auto rifle unless your only intent is to shoot others for reasons *beyond* self defence. The govt hasn't suddenly banned all guns, just ones that don't have a genuine feasible purpose beyond shooting up schools

@@MillsTC You seem to be completely ignoring two important points. *1.* Sport's shooting which has been gaining in popularity among Canadians for years. *2.* When was an AR-15 or other semi-automatic rifle in recent memory used to shoot up a school or other public place by a legal gun owner? and how does banning them from law abiding citizens help prevent a future mass shooting if *A.* Criminals can just get them illegally smuggled into the country and *B.* If Criminals can't easily get them legally because of all the legal hurdles that law abiding gun owners have to go thru in-order to become licensed so that they can buy and own non-restricted Firearms not to mention the additional hurdles you have to go thru to an RPAL for Restricted Firearms (Restricted Firearms are basically handguns and the over whelming majority of semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-15 platform) Did you know that Canadian gun owners have a background check automatically ran by the RCMP every 24 hours and the RCMP have the authority to enter your home without a warrant to inspect your Firearms and to ensure your storing them in compliance with the laws and regulations?

@@MillsTC Also just to expand on what Generik has been saying, I do not mean this rudely, but you seem very similar to most other fellow Canadian's that I've spoken to... uninformed. First of all, why would you need a semi-automatic rifle for hunting? Well, a quick follow up shot mainly. God forbid you miss a critical shot and accidentally harm a creature without killing it, the creature is going to *bolt*. You need to quickly get another round in it, which often times a bolt-action, lever action or various types of shotguns don't allow. It's much less cruel to quickly put the creature out of its misery. Secondly, bolt-action rifles, shotguns and all other types of firearms are just as deadly as semi-automatic rifles. They may fire a little slower, but they can do just as much damage. A well trained individual can fire a bolt action or level action rifle a lot faster than most people realize. Thirdly, concealed carry isn't even allowed in Canada. You have to be authorized to do so, and good luck getting authorized. It won't happen. Lastly, you cannot even own a 30 round magazine for a semi-automatic rifle in Canada. Or rather, you *can*, but it has to be pinned so that it won't accept more than 5 rounds. Pretty much all semi-automatics are only allowed 5 rounds at a time. Thanks for reading!
