The first time I heard Slipknot was on the school bus going down a gravel road in rural Iowa in probably 1999. It was my first burnt CD that some kid stole from his older sister and gave to me. It blew my mind at the time. Later I found out Corey grew up a half hour away from where I lived. When Stone Sour came out they recorded their first album at a then brand new local studio. A few years later I had the opportunity to meet Corey in the parking lot of a small local music venue

I feel like that tends to be the case with a lot of these Nu-Metal bands isn't it? Like their first 2-3 albums are pretty solid but then they kinda slip off sortaspeak. Like ti's not bad but just not as exciting or as impactful as the early stuff when it comes to the 2000s. Could be part nostalgia, could be just noticing how they've changed their sound a bit. I can't really say for Slipknot because I hadn't listened to them after All I Hope Is Lost came out but as much as I liked the singles for that album, I much preferred the older stuff. Another Nu-Metal band that this happened to for me was Kittie. Loved their first three albums but I wasn't into their later stuff as it didn't have that Nu-Metal charm that they first three did even though they did improve on a more technical level.

To me vol 3 is where it started to go bad. Too much Stone Sour elements, bad mixing and less of that self titled sound. In my opinion the main reason why people like that album is due to nostalgia. I was very late when I discovered the band and I've tried to listen to every release after the first two albums and I just can't like them.

Slipknot, easily one of the most iconic bands of the 2000s and they totally deserve it. I was a bit late to their music as my introduction was through "Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)" era, I wish I could've experienced "IOWA" and/or their debut but I didn't know anyone around me who listened to this kinda music at that time. Nonetheless like many others, "Duality" was my introduction to the band and I was so hooked on that song however it was "Vermilion Pt. 2" (the music video especially) and "Before I Forget" that truly had a hold on my 13-14 year old heart, those songs were amazing. However the whole album was brilliant and I think it holds up beautifully well. I eventually did get around to listening to their early work and I remember enjoying what I heard as well, perfect for my hidden inner angsty teen self in that time lol. Admittedly though my likeness for them kinda faded a bit not because I thought their music was bad but mainly because I was getting into other music at the time and wasn't listening to as much Nu-Metal anymore and when "All Hope is Lost" came out when I was a junior in high school, while I did really like the singles "Psychosocial" and especially "Dead Memories", I never got around to listening to the album, even to this day. I haven't listened to any of their newer stuff at all after those last two singles from All Hope Is Lost and I don't have the drive to listen to them anytime soon but I will always have respect and appreciation for what they did back in the 2000s and they totally earned that icon status in the Rock & Metal world. It's just a bit sad that they have become a trend band for some. I've seen some younger people wearing their shirts and not knowing they are a band and thinking they are clothing brand... It really blew my mind that even they are slightly getting that treatment... It's not as bad as say Nirvana or Misfits but it's telling of where their name might be in a few more years... 😕

I used to love playing "confessions" from their MFKR album around people and saying "bet you don't know who this is/won't believe who it is!". Seriously though, i wouldn't have minded seeing how they evolved with that original style over time, and hearing what kind of crazy, but definitely unique and original kinds of songs they would've managed to gift mankind with, had they kept this style and lineup 🤯 I mean, just in the song "B!+©h$pl@p", you have them essentially playing a nu metal breakdown (which the riff was actually kept and reused In their S/T album later on). So after starting off with a brutal, adrenaline pumping, SlipKnoT-style of prepping the listener to break bones and cause brain damage... only to then have the balls to concoct a surprisingly copacetic and mind-blowing merging of 2 genres that no single, sane person is a fan of both by themselves, and leaving you wanting more of the macchiato metal frappe' that isn't made anymore! by performing the musical equivalent of defibullating the listener when they're already awake! and without any kind of warning or buildup... they INSTANTLY, and unapologetically transition into a clean, upbeat jazzy sound, that resembles some music you would hear in the character select area of a Japanese fighting game (something like guilty gear), and then it crossbred with some "royalty free" tunes you might hear on a burned CD of instrumentals that a small coffee shop owner downloaded on Napster/limewire, to play for his customers all day. Seriously they were their own genre, basically "NU{√azz} metal" or "CoffeeGrind-core"... every time I listen to it, I halfway expect people to start quietly snapping their fingers in lieu of clapping/cheering as their applause at the end, or some self-renowned "cool cat" to start reciting his improv slam poetry as a surprise cameo haha

I gave my computer digital herpes hunting down the tracks to Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. while I was in high school in the early 2000s. I had a friend that knew I was into heavy metal and he kept telling me about Slipknot. At first I was like “do they really need nine members?” and “what’s up with the masks and jumpsuits?” But once convinced I gave the self-titled and Iowa a listen and immediately wanted more and that led to hoping on Kazaa and praying that track that took 12 hours to download was authentic and not some mislabeled local band’s shit demo. So after catching up with everybody else friends we’re coming to me to hear what I was able to harvest from the good old P2P. I always treated this ”demo” as more of an album and a decent one at that. They kind of lost me after Iowa but definitely worth seeing live. Also there was something about system 32…I’m sure that was nothing my computer needed to worry about.

Buddy, I gotta be honest, being 14-15-16 around the time of numetal's rise in popularity, there was this weird embarrassment I felt when I think of my 15 year old self wearing a Korn t-shirt and a gigantic pair of Jncos and listening to three dolla bill yall. This channel is actually reminding me that I was in fact cooler than absolutely everybody. That's a fact. Thank you.

One of the most annoying things I continue to hear about Slipknot is that they are a corporate entity that just ripped off Mushroomhead. I heard it back in ‘99 when I got the OG version of their debut and I hear it more now that I live in Ohio. SMH

My first Slipknot album was on a trade with my cousin for a Phil Collins album back when you used to order CDs from a magazine

The first two albums are my favorites Iowa being my personal favorite. It this band that got me in to the heavier side of music like meshuggah and other mask bands like Mr bungle and mushroomhead

Actually the Silver Disc is one of the first Corey demos. The band wanted to see how Corey sounds live, by using some special live equipment in the studio. The Gold Disc is actually the last Anders demo, which is just a better MFKR

The truth for the masks is probably somewhere in the middle. Clown is basically their marketing guru, at least in the early days. He brought in a mask as a joke but then others brought theirs, then he pitched the idea to them to use the look to promote the band.

When the music video to Spit it Out dropped so did my jaw, Slipknot got me out of metal orthodoxy and made me realize that there is more to music than "true and correct" death metal, after that I discovered numetal and then all other music genres I ignored forever. In a way if it wasn't for Slipknot I would never discover Wu Tang Clan lol

The self funded album , the slipknot album and Iowa are brutal and fresh to this day , for me those 3 albums sound like a completely different band , the stuff after that isn't for me but I'm glad there are so many kids who like them , even if it's because they like the more radio friendly stuff from the later years , hopefully they will find harder metal through listening to the harder stuff.

Metal is cathartic (big word) . It makes you feel good. When 'you are a muso' (are you?) it's art . Up the Knot ✌️🤘🏴☠️🇦🇺

Scissors is a masterpiece of a song. Probably my favourite from the album. I love dark and disturbing album closers. By the way, I think it captures everything good about Slipknot. It's a shame that they don't play it more often even though it's Corey's favourite Slipknot song.

Besides the placement of the tracks, the 10th anniversary edition has a different mix. I have both and I always go back to the original... something about the 10 year version is just off.
