From regifting to shrinkage to yadda yadda yadda, Seinfeld’s additions to the English lexicon are invaluable.

When I was a kid, I used to write skits and TV show episodes for me and my circle of friends and in one of them, I used the word regift and I was reading the script for my mom in the car on our way home from school one day and she told me that the term was from Seinfeld, and I was so shocked to hear it.

I always thought "gifting" was an incorrect way of saying giving. I googled it and learned that the word had a 400 year history, so I'll have to change my view. The article pointed out that gifting is more precise than giving. I gave my lawn mower to my neighbor, could imply that you let the neighbor use your lawn mower. If you didn't want the mower back, that would be clear if you used gifted instead of gave. I guess I should blame Seinfeld for popularizing the use of this correct but awkward term. It just goes to show how comedy can effect a change in the use of language.

I never knew that the episode that popularized the word "regifting" was the same episode where the two men say "The Ukraine is weak" while playing risk on a subway train next to another passenger who happens to be Ukrainian.

The term has been around since the days of Wyatt Earp.

The word "meh" predates the Simpsons (at least by a couple of decades), but they're often cited as the origin of the word.
