If this had happened on Star Trek Discovery, there would have been at least three cringe-y monologues about how much "I value you as a person" and a bunch of teary hugs.

You know the difference between this and NuTrek? All of this feels like absolutely 100% intentional homage and not rip-off.
@nel19622 жыл бұрын
No. It's a rip off. But a well done rip off. Seth loves to imitate the stuff he loves. It's his trademark. The whole show is as close as you can get to an imitation TNG. There's no hiding that. The difference maker is that it's done with real heart and so we can forgive the obvious lifts from other things. When I was watching this it was very clearly a mix of the Battle of Endor and raid on Starkiller Base.
@axelhopfinger5332 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is quite apparent that McFarlane understands and cherishes both Star Trek and Star Wars like a true fan. And he has the respect for their legacy to do them justice in his own way, to give the fandom what they craved for. More of the same, just done better with modern technology. It is the very essence of what a true to heart hommage should be!
@BlazingOwnager2 жыл бұрын
@@nel1962 >The whole show is as close as you can get to an imitation TNG. The difference between homage and rip-off is when you are open about your inspiration and what you create is a clear love letter to it. By that metric Orville is absolutely an homage to TNG with homages to Star Wars. For Christ's sake, mercer literally quotes Star Wars a few times. NuTrek tries to convince you what they are doing is /super cool/ and take credit for it, and are not eager to point those things out. Like the way they rip off the exact shots and look of Iron Man flying; they're not trying to homage Iron Man.

@@BlazingOwnager relax, he wasnt rude about his comment, only stating his (wrong) perception of the show's intent. the fact you had to use "for Christ's sake" tells me you took this comment, way too personal. its ok for people to have a differing opinion. that is how this world functions...or at least SHOULD function. as for him being a true fan, yes absolutely. did you see his TOS fan film, from before he even had a drivers license? here's a clip if you missed it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ_ChJqZrcxohrM it has dead space for the first 9 seconds though.

The only thing in the Orville I don't care for is how ships fly. I always preferred how they moved and fought in old trek, like they were massive starships (voyager and defiant being exceptions) But, at least in the Orville, the fast flying and shooting action scenes can be followed...in Nutrek, the actions is so over-the-top that you can't even follow it all.

Even thought DS9 took several elements from Babylon 5, the two made for compelling and dynamic shows with characters and plot we loved. Orville is just showing us the difference between copying and making it enjoyable rather than stealing and saying they're original.

I would say what Seth MacFarlane is doing with the Orville is more of an homage to the things he loves. in comparison to JJ Abrams and kurtzman which is to mock fiction for which they're incapable of recreating and or even imitating.

As far as I can tell after hearing SFDebris go in depth on the "Did DS9 rip off B5?" it sounds like essentially DS9 is an odd case of "What happened if you told the same idea pitch to two entirely different creative teams?" The same seed idea branched off in wildly differing directions.

It's not that surprising. Every time they said a slogan, like, "May the Force be with you", "I've got a bad feeling, etc.", I knew why it was there & who it was "Brought to you by". I also knew that if Orville had been on the other side of the Disney association, they would likely be in trouble for using all the references. I really can't blame them for leveraging their properties, and in this case, it's kinda cool they can do that, since it's the Orville. Personally, I think The Orville is worthy of wielding a bit of Star Wars' clout. It's a fun show.

Homage is one thing, but the Orville scenes seem to be drawn out and don't have any tension that hasn't been done before, if not arguably done better? I've kind of started to dislike the Orville's space battles. There doesn't seem to be any sense of tactical progression at all. It's just ships blowing up and other ships flying around while ships blow up. No formations, no rallies, no counters other than the 'cavalry' showing up to join the giant furball. Also we don't get any sense of what any ships are really capable of. I want to see a leviathan class actually do something other than blow up. Also, also. If you wanna compare something to Star Wars, compare Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars space battles.
