@AtomicShrimp Жыл бұрын
The grabbers are these: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0722GF318 (useful that they fold down and can fit in a backpack) The bag hoop is this one: bhl.co.uk/handy-bin-bag-holder-DC493635.html - some of these are quite expensive for what they are, depending on where you shop for them - it wouldn't be that hard to make something out of a piece of springy wood or a broken hula hoop or something. This one is very lightweight, which is a good feature. Gloves weren't really necessary as I didn't need to handle any of the rubbish (except the big pieces I suppose) - might be worth wearing rubber or leather gloves if it's a muddy location, or just if you feel more comfortable wearing them. One risk to be aware of is sharps - used hypodermic needles, blades, etc - not something I have ever encountered on the beaches I visit, but other places have this as a risk. Broken glass is about the worst risk here.

I have fond childhood memories of 'industrial beachcombing' strangely enough. My parents used to own an old campervan (just 'old' then, probably collectable now) and we'd often pick up interesting or useful finds off of remote beaches - those large fishing crates seemed plentyful; back at the campsite they'd be a pretend Row-boat or Dinghy, and then once home they'd be thouroughly cleaned and used for garden/garage storage. I'd never given it much thought really, but perhaps we did a little bit of good even back in the 90's...

Well-done! I started litter picking at the beginning of the year. I litter pick locally, so basically Surrey beauty spots, open spaces and certain National Trust sites. I haven't litter picked a beach yet, but I probably will, as and when I visit one. Of course most of the plastic I collect inland would reach the ocean, and given enough time, ultimately join one of those enormous circulating gyres or garbage patches. I graduated from a carrier bag to a rubble sack (which lasts at least a dozen trips). I made my own bag hoop out of some welded square mesh I had left over from a project. What amazes me is that people go to beautiful places and yet spoil it by leaving their shit there. (mostly but not entirely metaphorical). Litter picking the detritus left behind soon reveals the places where the doggers have been doing what doggers evidently do. Some of the stuff I collect is along the roadsides which means it will most likely have been thrown from motor vehicles. Some is left by picnickers who just got up and walked away, leaving everything after their meal. A percentage of dog walkers need to be called-out for their selfishness and stupidity, specifically those who think it’s OK throwing bagged faeces into the undergrowth (where they think nobody will notice) and allowing their dogs into wild ponds, thereby spreading invasive plants like New Zealand pygmy weed (Crassula helmsii), even when there are notices about the role of dogs in spreading this nasty, damaging weed. The world needs many more litter pickers. If everyone stopped dropping litter and collected some on each and every trip, the problem could easily be solved.
@ian-c.01 Жыл бұрын
A lot of plastic gets into the sea through carelessness and weather action, some does come from boats but a lot comes from poorly designed litter bins that empty out when the wind picks up ! The short lengths of propylene string is often the result of boat props contacting submerged fish nets, usually nets are discarded when they snag something and being really huge can reach from the rocks on the sea bed up to the surface. They can stay there for years and every time a boat passes over more pieces get chopped off !
@debbiehenri345 Жыл бұрын
I do reuse those oil drums as pots for growing vegetables (my garden soil is fairly shallow and very rocky, so potatoes don't do well in the ground. But they do very well in these drum-pots). However, I did like what you did with this one, Mike! I have shelves of art, decorating and sewing stuff, and my son is terrible for arranging all his computer components - and no shelf is used to its best potential. Reusing drums to keep things tidier in the spare room is a perfect idea. Glad to see the beach is tidier - but it just may be that a local group might have done a clean-up just recently. If my locality is anything to go by, rubbish always reappears pretty quickly. It's only tidier if I go out directly after a local volunteer group has beaten me to it. However, 5kg of plastic less on the beach is still great news - especially that fishing line. You only have to look at a few Ocean Conservation Namibia videos to see how terrible fishing line is for sealife. By the way, anyone else planning to reuse oil cans either in or out of doors - Remember that white and clear cans seem to be less UV stable. All of the drums in these two colours have perished very quickly for me and are probably better used as in this video as 'tidies' inside garages/sheds. The blue ones seem to last for years and years out of doors. I've containers turned into potato-pots that must have been outdoors for around 15 years now, and a couple of them have clearly been knocked about in the sea for a long time. Black and green ones also seem to have a very long life.

I love this beach cleanup. It's so important that everyone make the effort. One of the saddest nature sights I've ever seen is the beach at Jacmel, Haiti. The view was amazing, the town was so pretty, the people are wonderful. But the beach was absolutely covered in glass, plastic and trash of all kinds, all broken up into small bits - too much to ever clean up effectively. Taking a ferry across Port au Prince Bay was awful because the surface of the water is just covered in plastic and trash. And yet on a recent cruise, we stopped at Labadee, Haiti, which was absolutely pristine. A few thoughts - tourists to Labadee have no idea what the 'real' Haiti looks like (you have to travel with Haitians on a humanitarian trip to see that), and Labadee is an example of what proper money, time and management can do to keep someplace clean and beautiful. It made my heart break because most Haitians will never see or know a Haiti that looks like that.

We get to see Jen's face! Wonderful smile at the end - would be great to see more of her feature in your videos. Also, what a great idea to pick litter in force.

Blimey I hadn't heard ''Osmington Bay'' in literal YEARS. I went there in year 7 and made my first friends. The memories of that place..I specifically remember the white deer/stag(??) embedded into a hill. Best trip EVER.

This is excellent! In the warmer months I love taking a big bag out on my kayak on the Barwon River (near Geelong, Australia) and seeing how much garbage I can pull out. Great stuff!

I do the same with my wife whenever we go for walks in the woods or on the beach. We don't do weigh ins but I'm really thinking we should. Always great to see this sort of content

Im organising a litter pick in Hertford, where my company is based. I love the gamification, and weight based challenge. That makes the whole activity more entertaining. Thank-you for consistently inspiring! 🙏🏻

It's like the ABBA song, 'Winner takes it all', re-writ to 'Winner takes definitely more than the other one.' Great video. Thank you.

I've always been of mine to keep spaces clean even if it isn't my job to pick up after others. Ironically, at home I'm quite messy. This is a lovely competition, you two!

From the title I thought I was about to watch a long standing battle between you and a serial litterer on the beach
