I remember how happy I was when they finally put this project together. Always liked what Steve Kimock brought to the table. He has that 'snake in the woodpile' feel like Jerry. Mark Karen was great with Ratdog but kind of superfluous in this setting. That also goes for Dave Ellis who is truly a brilliant player. Also, I always liked Banyon Tree. It's as good as any of Bobby's post-Jerry stuff.

I'm going to be that person: hearing this makes me realize how great the Grateful Dead would have been post-Brent had Hornsby taken over (sans Welnick) and Garcia was health enough that they could practice and put in the time to perform well.

Ok. Let's get this straight. Hornsby was never going to join the Dead. In addition to that , Phil has stated that Hornsby didn't really get it.

@@brbadge I never heard Phil say that. I heard Weir say that Hornsby was a great player, but did not provide "texture" to the music and was "out front" too much. But Weir also selected Hornsby to be front and center with the Other Ones. In Ratdog, Weir chose Chimenti -- a jazz guy who is a lot like Hornsby. So I never quite understood Weir's comments; especially given some of the best passages on Infrared Roses came from Hornsby and Weir notably had Welnick entirely turned off in his in-ear-monitors; meaning I have no idea how he could speak to Welnick's ability. All of which is to say, I never understood Weir's comments. Hornsby said he didn't want to join for 2 reasons: (1) he had his solo career; and (2) the band was not as tight and did not practice enough. In fact, after playing with them in 1994, he made it clear he wouldn't play with them again, given how bad they were. But you missed my point: I was talking about the fact that the band would have been better HAD Hornsby joined fulltime. Not whether or not it was reality.
