As someone who discovered Panic! recently purely from the power of Brendon’s voice and the later albums I find the whole Brendon vs Ryan thing pretty odd (excuse the pun). Ryan and Jon left the band. They not only left it, they started a new band. And, yet, people are mad that the remaining members went on without them. Happens all the time with lots of bands, not sure why it’s especially heinous this time? Why Brendon is so ‘evil’ for wanting to continue something that was both successful and his dream job when it was left in his lap?Sounds like Spencer was a big part of the decision too, but no one rants about how terrible he is. Sure, Ryan was a good songwriter, but the initial popularity of the band was a combo of that and Brendon’s voice and stage presence. And from the sounds of it, Ryan actually left two bands because of creative differences. Maybe he just wasn’t good at compromising with others musically/being in a band? I do understand. There’s something seductive about Ryan’s tortured emo lyrics and his cynical, quiet-spoken presence, but he’s not a music god. Just a decent musician. And the reception to Take a Vacation! proves that. If he’d stayed in Panic! and Brendon had left, the next Panic! Album would have been much like TaV, which was good, as noted in the video, but not incredible. People need to let go of that weird fantasy that it was all Ryan. It’s like all those AI covers coming out of Ryan ‘singing’ old Fever songs. No one can argue that the original band would have found the fame they initially did if Ryan was lead singer.

I was more of a MCR fan in this sort-of genre, but one day Spotify spat out Cape Town to me in some playlist mix, and I was immediately hooked on this band. I was also immediately horrified when I looked up that there is only one album from 2011. Must say I'm still feeling hungry for more of that kind of sound!

its the voice for me, brendon is simply a unique talent, now imagine combining unique lyrics, unique sound and unique vocals, panic had it all, now you take out one of those ingridients and its simply not the same, brendon could continued cuz he already had the momentum, ryan had to start over and it was not that exciting anymore cuz his ok singing was overshadow by brendon´s god voice. He would have to make a fever 2 so he could´ve got a bit more popularity and thats hard to achieve

I agree that Brendon’s voice is objectively better. And taking away Ryan’s lyrics didn’t really hurt Panic cuz Brendon was a decent songwriter, plus he had help from people like Pete Wentz and John Feldman.

Ryan is a great singer. He's underated because of being compared to Brendon as a singer. But listening to Denver 06 and his backing vocals it's amazing l.

Omg I've listened to Panic! for such a long time and never really noticed that John was so handsome! I wish he was more confident (he and Ryan seem quite shy and reserved), maybe he really could become a great frontman. I like Ryan, but he's not really a frontman material.

I looove the young veins and take a vacation. Though im not a vicious panic at the disco hater (although i am pre split biased and not a big fan of panics later work lol) theres just something about that album that captivates me more than panics work save for pretty odd. Though no denying Brendons vocal talent i think Ryans voice is rlly nice and it works really well for the vintage rock sound. So does johns, and their voices work well in unison, a very lennon-mccartney feel when they sing together. I got into stuff like the beatles and the beach boys when i eventually "left" my emo phase so i cant help but adore an album made by people who seemed to do the same lol. Dangerous blues is my favorite track. I love slow waltzy songs like that and ocean/beach themes. Take a Vacation seemed to have taken a bit of a pet sounds direction in terms of its acclaim--misunderstood at the time of its release, but loved dearly in retrospect. Seems john and ryan (at leasr john) have been seeing the love the young veins have been getting and i hope, regardless of whether or not theyll get back together, it brings a smile to their faces.

@@bahrlee Ryan and Jon definitely have good harmonies and unique voices. Brendon is one of my favorite singers so I’m biased, but I don’t think Ryan gets enough credit as a pretty good indie vocalist.

That’s an interesting thought…I think a Brendon and Spencer project would have been more successful. Brendon definitely had more of an ear for pop and a willingness to embrace pop that Ryan didn’t. If Ryan and Jon kept Panic I think it would’ve gone the way of The Young Veins.

thanks for the vid! just wanted to add a little, but very important part to your story: Ryan said he was shocked by the fact that Urie and Spencer decided to carry the band. he said they were hiding it in some way so Ryan and Jon didn't know anything until panic went on tour in 2011. Urie basically stole the brand name to get more fame. sadly, i couldn't support panic after that

That isn't true. He knew Spencer and Brendon were keeping the name and signed a new contract. Nothing was stolen. Why would they release New Perspective under the Panic name in 2009 and continue touring up even before Vices was released if this were the case? He didnt 'steal the name' to get more fame. It was Brendon's band too. It wasn't ALL Ryan. It was collaborative down to the instruments, the literal notes being written, and the lyrics. Brendon and Spencer kept doing the work, kept showing up, and made great music. And Ryan left to make Beatles rip off music. Simple as that. Also blaming Urie for stealing the name but not Spencer??? Really...? Sorry but no.

i feel like the biggest reason brendon got the ego he has now is BECAUSE of ryan’s own ego during his time in panic, that narrative isnt what people want to hear though

@@Corarii I feel like they had ego in the beginning when they were really young and thrusted into this big level of fame. I think after the split, after The Young Veins, after Brendon did most of the studio work in Panic, they both probably grew and realized that it was the music and the legacy that matters. I think that’s why we don’t hear either of them bad mouth each other. It would be easy for Ryan to say “Brendon stole my band” or Brendon to say “I made the band more successful” but neither of them do, and I respect them for that.

In the end Brendon was right. Ryan wanted to larp and pretend he was in The Beatles. All Brendon wanted to do was make commercially successful pop music. I'm on Brendon's side here.
