Very good and promising work. But for this scheme to become environmentally stable, they have to consider introducing patches of suitable woods of hardy trees like casuarinas, neem etc, which would act as wind breaks that reduce evaporation and also as air conditioners, while increasing humidity- vital for plant growth.

The only problem is i dont see the govt running this project on maintanance and effeciency since everything the govt purchases and runs is over priced, mismanagment, corruption, over bloated staff and there is never any incentive to reduce running costs bascially run like a parastatal depending on the govt for hand outs. The sooner its privatized the better

How come the price of Unga is KShs 250. Where does all the maize go. Let me tell you one thing. The Project will fail because of adopting pumping at the intake. I request the people in charge to get in touch with me to solve the problem. Munya seems to know a bit of the Problem that faces the project.

The 'filtered' water at 0:43 looks green and unfit for irrigation purposes. I hear there was a report that stated that this water is unfit for irrigation but the government went ahead to implement the project. For Galana Kulalu and Thwake dam to be viable and productive projects, the Nairobi river and all the rivers which are in the Athi basin must be cleaned and measures to keep them clean put in place lest they might be the cause of terminal diseases in the next decade or two. There's no point in having mega projects that will endanger the existence of the same people that it's supposed to help. The government might have as well pumped in the billions to smallscale holder irrigation schemes that have proved to be very impactful and improved the lives of thousands of households with minimal government aid after their commissioning.

I wonder most products in the market are from smallscale farmers along the river they pump water directly into their farms and produce without filtration or treatment what makes it bad for galana. Some people fight everything progress towards food security as they find good business supplying maize dont be fooled

@kamandenjuguna5103 2 жыл бұрын
@@luventurerciamorris6514 Are we talking about the unregulated agriculture industry in Kenya? You can't even trace your foods. The only time we grow safe food is when we grow it for export because the destination countries hold us to high standards. Just because we produce food with that water doesn't make it right.
@ellenpaul678

Is Kenya really food insecure? Doesn't Kenya need more of storage infrastructure to help stabilize prices and less of importation especially when our farmers are scrabbling to get their produce sold. How about we stop creating crisis where it does not exist and start supporting our farmers more by imposing the necessary tariffs. In any case the government should be engaging the locals in this instead of doing the farming. This appears to be yet another white elephant. Remember the Nyayo tea zones?
@rahimali3004

Its called wrong priorites, luck of vision, corruption etc. For instance we are going to build a nuclear plant costing billions yet we dont have enough food, toilets, sewer systems, yet we have 10000mw of geothermal which is renewable and once you build the plant the energy is free, clean and not harmful to the environment. why not use that money to exploit all our geothermal and other renewables. Its wrong prioriities and the list is long. There is enough money in kenya to invest in such projects but we prioratize the wrong things
@ellenpaul678
@ellenpaul678 4 жыл бұрын
@@rahimali3004 the nuclear plant plan is not only irresponsible but dangerous. Major environmental concern related to nuclear power is the creation of radioactive wastes such as uranium mill tailings, spent (used) reactor fuel, and other radioactive wastes. These materials can remain radioactive and dangerous to human health for thousands of years thus causing various kinds cancers and rendering the affected areas useless for years.

Anytime you comment,do good research,nyayo tea zones were a good idea of engaging small holder African farms into co-op to compete and benefit with multinationals,it's still going,did you know that kenya has the most successful small holder cashcrop farming in the 3rd world!
@ellenpaul678

@@georgebenson2133 what kind of research did you do? When was it okay for government to clear a forest inorder to grow tea so as to compete with small scale farmers? Do you understand a government function in a country? And how would you say tea farmers are doing today being paid Ksh 9-30 per kilo for their tea? Have you ever been a farmer or taken up a basic government function and policy class. Educate yourself man.

The project looks promising. The big problem is the Government and the people of Kenya going to change and try this time make sure the project is for masses to benefit or is it just a matter of time before we hear a few millionaires making it big while the ordinary mwanainchi is left paying the price. I still remain optimistic that one day we will get there. Pongezi for everyone involved, you are making our Nation Great.

First of all i would not grow maize or fruits and vegetables. What we ned to grow is animal feed crops like soya, sunflower, millet, sorghum, sorghum, bracharia, rhodes grass these can be bailed. instead of importing animal feeds. basically all animal feed crops that do well in semi arid areas that require minimum water. Once we become animal feeds secure the other sectors will grow like cattle, chicken, pig, fish farming, that would bring down the cost of protein. eggs, milk, meat etc. And many rural folk can start their own milling plants in their areas to process these crops into feeds and selling these feeds to surrounding farmers of animal keep. We can then have a series of feed lots for cattle in northern Kenya as climate change takes its toll because there will be readily available animal feeds. Maize can be grown in maize growing areas where it does well in Rift and western Kenya where the climate is conducive since these areas recieve adequate rainfall.
