15:30 album by Klara Lewis, not Khan Lewis. And apologies to Tom Recchion for butchering your name.

Just catching your 2024 tag now, and wanted to mention I met Annea Lockwood this evening at a film screening for "32 Sounds" which she was featured in. What a fascinating woman, so unassuming and incredible in her elegance. While born in NZ she does consider herself an American artist at this point. Had I seen this earlier I would have put a bug in her ear regarding your wish for a reissue of GW. Some great footage from a few BBC segments from the glass pieces etc. Also, her partner was Ruth Anderson… who passed away in 2020 I believe. Room 40 did a reissue of GW, although it looks to be digital and CD only. Maybe they'd be up for a vinyl pressing?

Great picks Alex! Love the Don Cherry, was finally able to find my copy a few years back from Dusty Groove in Chicago. Aesop Rock is one of my favorite rappers, i love trying to figure out his lyrics, his vocabulary is immense and of course the beats are amazing both from Blockhead and himself. Monette Sudler is great, awesome guitarist. I see some of the Lovely Music stuff occasionally around here, usually the Alvin Lucier records because he was pretty prominent, living and teaching about 20 min away from me.

Hey Tom, Happy New Year, I miss your mind- blowing videos. I spent time hanging out with Ed Blackwell at Wesleyan University, I used to drive there from Rhode Island. Anthony Braxton and Alvin Lucier were also teaching there at the time. I heard some amazing music!
@tomminko11 ай бұрын
@@michaelvalentini4869Yes! I remember when they both taught at Wesleyan. That’s really cool you got to hang out with Ed Blackwell. Thanks for the kind words, i hope to come back with a video at some point.

@@tomminko Tom, I met Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell when they played a duo at the Ornette Coleman festival that was held at Real Art Ways in Hartford, circa 1985. Don and Ed treated me like a brother, Ed gave me his phone number and told me to visit him while he was teaching at Wesleyan. Don drew me a little picture and left his autograph, without even telling me, I found it in my car ( I gave them a ride after the gig).

This video could be my entry to the tag question of records shown by VC'ers you're jealous of. Really want that Cherry record. I'll be in Japan this summer and that one is top of my list to find and take home (hopefully). that Hassell went under my radar too for too long. Spann is another case of not realizing it was limited as it's been in my discogs and bandcamp wantlist for a few months and now it's too late. Was not aware of that BYG/Actuel record, seems right up my alley.

Happy New Year. Enjoyed this very much, thank you. The Sydney Spann LP made a positive impression on me - left it on repeat for a couple of turns and talked it up to anybody who would listen. Thanks for the Jon Hassel tip, big fan, found an overpriced, 2nd hand Compact Disc on eBay after the vid.

Ha! I almost put the Sidney Spann in too, for same question, but thought I'd go wth some dance music ^^ Stil have all those early Aesop Rock, should check them out again. RIP Monnette. Oh, and you were talking about Klara Lewis, sith SFT, Graham Lewis' daughter, of Wire. She's done a few records on Mego, and one with Nick Void, of recent. Cheers Alex, it will be difficult to top 2023 in terms of catches.

yeah khan lewis sounded completely wrong when i said it, I'll add it to the notes. yeah that first aesop EP finally got on vinyl last year, worth picking up for cheap. Coles video will be up soon.

Annea Lockwood was on the cover of the August 23 issue of The Wire. So maybe there’s a chance her stuff will be reissued.

yes I think I saw that, probably related to the release she had with Ruth Anderson

Alex, your description of the Monnette Sudler brought tears to my eyes- tears of JOY! The first thing I said to Don Cherry was, ''You are beautiful". Don thought I said his music was beautiful. Ed Blackwell corrected him, and said, '' He thinks your face is beautiful, I think you're funny looking'' We all laughed and I kissed both of them! John Cage was a very early discovery for me. He had an immeasurable impact on Music and Creative Thought. The Wergo label was the first to support his work, then the Mode label followed their lead. Tom Recchion's work with Extended Organ is a real blast, their recording on Birdman, ''XOXO'' floats my boat and sinks my ship.Maggi Payne is another wonderful woman who works in electronics and also plays the flute. She worked with lots of people including Annea Lockwood. Alvin Curran told me the story about the different versions of MEV, I wish I could remember the details, but I drank too many beers.

Hassell LP was a return to form after a couple of decades of weaker efforts, I may not have picked it up when released had it not been on ECM. The K Lewis requires visual scenes of horror, struggles on its own, a vinyl that could come in handy if you want to induce nightmares in young children. Radrigue a good example of sounds that in the 70's would have sounded innovative, fascinating, appealing yet 50yrs later attract a- what is the point of another one of these efforts.
@michaelvalentini486911 ай бұрын
Hey Mike, Hassell's '' City: Works Of Fiction'' from 1990 is top-drawer stuff, the 3cd expanded version is more of a good Thing.
@miketomlin604011 ай бұрын
@@michaelvalentini4869 I recall it being quite weak, going for a more 'industrial' sound that was becoming more in vogue, although I notice I still have the vinyl in storage, so may have thought it was tolerable, or worth another try, but we are going back decades here. I saw him perform mid 90's era, seemed disinterested, directionless, as were his 'band'.
@michaelvalentini486911 ай бұрын
@@miketomlin6040 The recording does have a mechanistic sound which might be construed as industrial, but the complexity of the grooves takes it to another geographic space where industry has not left it's mark. Adam Rudolph's organic hand drumming weaves quite nicely with all the ''treated'' electric sounds. Funny, you bought ''Last night....", because it was on ECM. I did not buy it soley for the fact that it was released on ECM. I could not imagine that Manfred Eicher could capture the true nature of Jon's visionary approach. Thank God, Manfred did not produce ''On The Corner'' by Miles Davis, which is the template for Fourth World music. I never thought of Hassell as a live performer, just a studio project like Steely Dan. Give City: Works Of Fiction, another spin, time heals all wounds.
@miketomlin604011 ай бұрын
@@michaelvalentini4869 Some of the best Lp's of the 20th century are on ECM, but it is a bewildering label with a blend of disasters and glories. I may have thought after Hassell losing the muse for a while Eicher might be able to get him back on track, who knows for sure, long time ago! I was a fan of Hassell, have his first lot of vinyls, so with these folks I often tend to bite the bullet as it were, plus he's a name so if they are a dogs dinner they are easy enough to re-sell. I don't know about his career as a live performer, that night he and the band seemed to have met a few hrs before, quite a few glances along the lines of 'what are we doing'? I'll give City a chance once or if I get the vinyl back one day. ps Be careful comparing people to Steely Dan, that could be construed as crossing the line!

Sydney Spann, intrigued by that one. Looks oddly familiar. Killer gift from Jason with that MEV. I love a good hippie freakout. There was a bunch of Def Jux discussion on Stunty's stream, maybe you saw. Had me wishing I still had all the CDs I used to have. A couple were Aesop.

I have Malibu Ken, which Aesop did with Tobacco and I really like that. But it seems like Aesop is someone a lot of people like to diss. I'll be doing Stunty's as well, but I'm having difficulty with picking a record others would be surprised I own. My tastes are so eclectic, I'll have to think about that one.

yeah not sure how he was received early on, skinny Jewish kid that he was, but I would imagine his reputation is good within the 'indie hip hop scene (if that's even a thing).

Nice to see that Earl Sweatshirt album. Like you, It’s not an album I’m usually aware of but a close friend had turned me unto Sweatshirt back in 2013. And I was really taken by the uniqueness of the music. It’s a complex, creative and landmark hip-hop album. I’m intrigued by the John Cage record. It’s a record I’ve never seen before. Very cool sleeve too. Great video for the Stunty vinyl tag, Alex. Happy New Year! Cheers, Shawn
