Shot in 2014, I'm always pleasantly surprised to run across this medley of turbine Otter related footage from trips past, previously shown in Odds and Ends ( • Odds and Ends - Alaska... ). Here's 3 minutes of turbine Otter love, from modern day bush pilot hero Paul Claus singing its praises, to Talkeetna Air Taxi working tourists on and off the Kahiltna glacier.

Haha, sorry guys. Some edits will be long form and some...short. I have lots of footage tucked away, and sometimes it's easier to just make a short edit from something and share it, rather than sit on it forever.

I have flown in many turbine otters over the years here in Alaska, nice but I still love the sound of the original otter, unfortunately most have been converted to turbine up here, I get why, maintenance, upkeep, plus you get much more power with the turbine, I have many fond memories still though waiting for my “pickup “, in some AK valley pass, or lake and hear that “Harley Davidson” rumble sound of a beaver or piston powered otter coming!

The other reason for turbine a/c is the issue of 100LL av gas, the last fuel sold in the United States that contains lead. It will be phased out as soon as a suitable renewable gasoline-type fuel becomes available.

Iv'e got to make some plans to go ride in this beauty. I love that area. Wrangell St. Elias is a vast national park that rises from the ocean all the way up to 18,008 ft. At 13.2 million acres, the park is the same size as Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Switzerland combined ! Will have to add this to the Bucket List for sure......

I used to fly with maps that were just blanks! Last I flew, I had good GPS that gave me the exact distance, direction and height but it was was so foggy that I could not see my own wing or the Otter's nose! So I could land totally blind but at the right place. Imagine, you slowed down and suddenly, you landed, then go forward very slowly until I see a beach, then turn the plane around to back up to that beach! I had two GPS, one was my portable one, in case the other one shut down!

Guys it’s not a “turbo”, it’s a turbine! Big difference.

@@troyottosen8722 It's even nuttier than that: there is a "Turbo Otter" model and also a "Turbine Otter" model and both use (different models of) turbine engines.

@@Senor0Droolcup , I forgot about that now I do remember seeing a few beaver turbo, we have many turbine otters up here in Alaska, there is a beautiful Grumman goose that has been flying out of lake hood in Anchorage and a few Grumman widgeons still fling up here. A little trivia for you, did you know lake hood is the largest, busiest seaplane base in the world? Also many pilots up here switch from floats to skis in winter.😉
