@Grim Piñata for me I think it was funny because this game doesn’t try too hard to take itself too serious and this was just an awesome way to move the story. There was something about being frozen, but when you bring it up the dude is just like “yeah that’s a thing” I think the writing around it is what makes it good. @@Grim_Pinata A major discerning factor is that Obsidian is pretty self-aware about the less than certain explanation for the time dilation power. They even pull it back into focus during a dialog for a late-ish game quest for Sublight. One throwaway line by an NPC (which I don't want to spoil) caught me off-guard and planted some serious doubt in my mind. The more classic examples come late-game with Parvati and Felix if you decided to side with The Board. Yeah pretty much. Bidding one dollar under would literally be you guessing the price exactly. The only way you could win in that situation is if the person you bid a dollar less than actually guessed a price that’s only $1 higher than the actual price. Otherwise you’re both over the price and it resets or youre both under and the person who guessed $1 higher than you is closer to the actual price. The two cheeky plays are bidding a dollar HIGHER or just bidding $1 or some other obviously low price because you think the prior guesses are all too high.

Usually, if someone bets 300 dollars... the asshole will bid 301. Thus freezing that person out entirely as, what everyone agrees to be, a "dick move". Their bid would only count for a min/max difference of 99 cents. Which makes it *very* unlikely for them to win that bid. Thus that person would think that you're a big jerk for doing that to them. Do you get it yet? So if you bid 1 dollar lower... you're giving *yourself* only a 99 cent min/max difference. You'd basically have to already know the answer to do that to yourself. @ShadowCoH316

It's a valid criticism. Party members who have no independence or plot relevance tend to feel less like characters and more like window dressing. But I feel the complete lack of romance options breaks that trend somewhat, allow me to explain. Typically in games like these we're given options for romance of some description with the characters. When Parvati is introduced, what did you anticipate? I was under the impression that she was the first option and I only had that impression because I'd been conditioned by these RPGs to expect it. Instead she tells you shes not even into that stuff, and also she likes this other person who- when you meet them- you learn is just a better person than you no matter what you've chosen up to this point. Junlei dedicated everything to keeping a whole community alive and all you did was shoot some people and irreparably interfere with the lives of strangers. This leans into the flaws Yahtzee stated, namely the constant shooting and murdering you're kinda just expected to do. It uses the tropes of similar games in a way I'd liken to parody. Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, and Knights of the Old Republic all did this. It's just sort of a given. The reason stated here is just that the world is such a harsh place that you're just required to be armed- essentially the same excuse as Fallout, and it's just that: an excuse. But it's an excuse to provide a style of gameplay that we've grown accustomed to. It would be hard to make an anti-capitalist Fallout parody and then remove the Fallout-like combat style. At that point the parody is gone, and so is it's appeal to Fallout's huge audience.

That's a very big assumption, especially considering the player's potential ambitions at that point. If they are motivated by saving the colonists and undermining the corporation there's no definitive way to say that Junlei is a better person than you. Especially if you then proceed to help her save her own ship for the time being. Not to mention Parvati doesn't fall for her because of that. Junlei is sweet, flirtatious, persistent and shares a hobby with her. That's why she likes her. The game never gives the player a chance to be those things with her so I dunno, it feels like a raw example for me.

I like Yahtzee as an entertainer, but I think he's a terrible reviewer. Not because I feel he has bad taste in games, but because his praise is so slight you can assume that _anything_ he reviews is going to come off looking middling at best. A reviewer who only gives bad reviews is equally as useful as a reviewer who only gives good reviews. Reviews are supposed to be subjective. This way you can find a reviewer who's tastes align with your own, and be informed about what you'd probably like. I don't think Yahtzee dislikes all games, but I think he's trapped because his audience expects a very cynical tone all the time.
