Everyone loved Bud Clark. He was mayor during the most corrupt decade for PPB. The police union was very powerful back then and "policed" itself. Does anyone remember the "possum" incident with the "don't chock 'em smoke 'em" sign to punctuate their murder of a black man? Bud fired them, but the police union made us take them back. A very embarrassing and sad time for Portland to put up with their nonsense. But once we finally got rid of the old guard after the subsequent murder of a jail inmate, Portland police and jail deputies couldn't be more professional, with few exceptions. I guess getting the sh*t sued out of you goes a long way.
