To be fair it does have an actual meaning, just one unrelated to Philip. "Belos" is the Greek version of the Babylonian god "Bel" which means Lord or Master (Also related to the Canaanite term Baal). Which makes a (presumably Puritan) witch hunter using the name even more ironic.

I think Belos is just meant to sound like "bellows" (y'know, that thing old timey people used to pump air into a forge or furnace or oven so the fire would burn hotter). Philip's identity/role as Emperor Belos is merely a tool intended to more efficiently kill witches.

In one photo we see Belos' brother and another person in a hood greeting him while Belos is holding a dagger behind his back. Then we see in other photos there is a fire and Belos still with the dagger and Belos' brother lying on the ground. Then we see Belos standing over what looks like a bathroom sink with the dagger in the sink and the photo after that is kind of blurry but I can make out what looks a hand doing 👌. I think the sink one is Belos carving his ears into a point with the dagger (I've theorized that he did this ever since he revealed his face) and the hand one is him holding a needle and thread to sew up his ears. What I can gather from these photos is that Belos' brother made friends with a witch but Belos didn't like that and tried to kill the witch so the witch started a fire to try to stop Belos but Belos' brother was killed in the process. Belos' blamed the witch for his brother's death, went completely dark, carved his ears to pass off as a witch, and went on a mission to kill all witches so that no other human would die from these witches.

I have a potential theory for "The Owl House," could Luz (and humans in general) possibly be something of an amplifier for magic cast by witches? The reason I bring this up is because some of the most impressive feats (outside of Eda's) were performed with Luz either being directly involved or in close proximity to the spell being cast.
