Pitcairn Islands, Norfolk Island, and Wallis and Futuna left the chat Also it was prolly good to mention rotuma aswell and maybe the cocos / keeling islands and Christmas Island
@Dave_Sisson11 күн бұрын
Cocos / Keeling and Christmas Islands are in the Indian Ocean and were uninhabited before people of Malay / Indonesian origin arrived to work there in modern times. So they have no ethnic, linguistic or geographical connection with the Pacific Islands.
@marcelswyter907811 күн бұрын
But politically they are tied to Oceania, via their ownership by Australia. Also he prolly should’ve talked abt the Torres Strait Islands as the indigenous Torres Strait islanders are Melanesian

funny thing about Fiji is that weird dent in the Polynesian triangle can be drawn as a straight line through east fiji because the people of that region (Lau islands) have very strong Polynesian influence. So Fiji is sort of the transitional point of Melanesia to Polynesia😅

You should do a video about Polynesian outliers and Micronesian outliers!
@tasilua10519 күн бұрын
Dont forget we also have many outlier Polynesian Islands as far as Kapingamarangi and Nukuoro right north of Papua New Guinea, so the Polynesian triangle should be more shaped like a stingray

Our human brains tend to ignore how big the Pacific ocean really is because our brains evolved to comprehend land and not seas. I mean, the Pacific Ocean covers almost 30% of the Earth's surface which is more than Earth's landmass but we tend to ignore this stunning fact because of how our brains work so it's no wonder that these islands also get missed out

I have a question about Kiribati: do all of the archipelagos in that country count as parts of Micronesia or are some of them in Polynesia? (dunno whether that should depend on the local cultures or on arbitrary lines or what)

Ancient Polynesians managed to find so many tiny islands in the vast Pacific, a spec of land in an endless array of water and yet somehow I can't find my father. He left for a pack of cigarettes a few years ago (17 years ago) and hasn't been back since. Anyway great video on a topic not usually covered even by geography channels!
