The Pad Thai Queen Of Berlin | Street Food Icons

We meet Ms. Te Gu De (aka Pim) who introduces us to Berlin's Thai Park and shows us how she prepares arguably the best Pad Thai in Germany.
Since the 1990s, Thai women in Berlin have been meeting in Preußen Park in Berlin’s Wilmersdorf to eat together, play cards and share Thai delicacies.
Local Berliners became curious over the years and wanted to try the exotic food, and one of the largest Asian street food markets of the time was born.
Pim has been a part of the market since she was a little girl and, as a young migrant, it quickly became an important point of contact for her. She soon started selling baked prawns and mango lassi.
In the beginning, it was hard to fight for a place in the market, but Pim always believed in herself and her cooking skills. Her self-confidence grew, and she learned traditional Thai cuisine from various chefs. Her stand got bigger, she hired a team and developed her own recipes.
Today she mainly cooks pad thai and when her booth is very busy, she sometimes cooks with four pans at the same time. When the market was limited by the regulatory authorities, she founded the Thai association with her peers and fought to legalize it.
The market has been legal since 2021.

Wow this is the first time I’ve heard a Thai accent spoken in a different language other than English. It’s crazy because you can still hear those distinct linguistic sound in certain word that has that Thai accent yet it flows really well with German. I’m not fluent in Thai so at times it was hard for me to distinguish whether she was speaking her native tongue or German.

thaipark is one of the best things about living in berlin. it is the perfect thing on a summer afternoon. her pad thai is better than many i've had in thailand and she is just like this irl. the city government shut it down for a while due to some bullshit bureaucratic reasons (germany) and so many people fought so hard to bring it back. it really it such a special thing that brings a lot of joy.

The Problem was, that there were no proper facilities for having culinary business booming. For example there were only the public bins which werent spacey enough. I think now they set it up properly now.. I really hope it doesnt change too much

Another quality video Munchies. I like how she uses ingredients from scratch. Pad Thai is a very difficult dish but it is my litmus test at thai restaurants. You don't want the pad thai wet because you want the sauce to absorb in the noodles, but you also don't want it dry. It's a difficult dish to master. When you cook it at home, expect to use a lot more sauce and oil then you're used to though. It's a guilty pleasure.

Its not difficult as it is more tedious. Once you have the sauce made, everything goes quite quickly. My issue with most restaurants isn't when it's too dry but when it's too wet and the sauce coats the noodles instead of absorbing. Pad thai in Thailand isn't wet like how it is here in the states. A lot of places here, cook the noodles first, so it absorbs a lot of water and the sauce doesn't fully seep into the noodles but just sits on top. Also, the bright orange color that is typical of pad thai here...smh.

We have visited her booth today at Thai Park in Berlin. The Pad Thai was very tasty, we had two portions for 8 Euro each, with prawns. She cooked them from scratch and there was a generous amount of prawns, thank you very much! We would be happy to come again!
