I was a board-certified pain specialist for much of my career, 50% of my patients were back patients. First thing you need is an MRI to see exactly what you’re dealing with and if you have any peripheral neuropathy. Second thing that you should think about is perhaps some steroid injections. That can give immediate relief of your pain, it will also tell you if it’s safe for someone to give you massage therapy to react the muscles that reflectively going into spasm to protect the injury that you have people have blown discs. This happens as a preservative measure. You can also alternate ice and heat. Anti-inflammatories are helpful as well, but you have to know what you’re dealing with and you likely have blown discs. They do heal themselves in cases without serious intervention, and I seriously suggest against surgery unless there’s difficulty with urination or functions of elimination. Most of my patients were there because of failed back surgeries. Get your advice from the data and from board certified specialist not from KZbinrs. I had three blown discs similar to what you’re describing and all of them have healed themselves with steroid injections, epidural and trigger point injections to calm the muscles down. Maybe a little PT as well. The yoga suggestion is good once that settles down do not get surgery unless there is absolutely no other choice, and that is when your bodily functions are not under control , remember the reason their muscles go into spasm is to make you stop working because the underlying pathology is not getting a chance to heal. It is unlikely epidurals, RFL, trigger points, massage, therapy, PT and yoga, won’t help you your young active man. This will pass.

Good Morning Ryan - I can certainly sympathize with your back pain. Sure, hope you can get some relief for the pain. I am 76 years old, suffered a compression fracture at L4 about 1 year ago. Have had two back surgeries and still in constant pain. Before breaking my back, I was a very active 75 year old and now I am fighting thru the pain every day just to do simple chores. My advice is, get it fixed now. If you keep doing what you are doing now, it will only get worse. Get Well soon. We care. Regards, Randy @ Coyote Sticks by Wiley

8-17-24 As a lifelong back-pain victim, I have been waiting patiently for this fellow to finally succumb to his back pain which this morning it seems he may have as this is the first time in the years I've been watching him mill wood from trees found only on his property then erect structures to show us on Saturdays that this is the first Saturday he has failed to show. I assume he has succumbed to his lower back pain and may even be seeking medical intervention. I hope that this is not the last we see of this gentleman. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Okay, get back to work!

Ryan not sure if you have access to a swimming pool but water exercises are so good for healing the back. I had ruptured discs and they wanted to fuse my lumbar vertebrae. I took a year off and lived in an apartment complex with an indoor pool. Everyday swimming for almost a year. Had another MRI and my back was healed. Steroid injections do work for the pain in some people but not everyone. Maybe initially get a couple and see if they work but don't rely on them long term. I had a Dr at Mayo tell me that they will eventually deteriorate the bone tissue. At any rate hope you heal up soon and get back to what you love to do.

First off, I want to thank you and your miniature mastodon for the great videos every week. As far as your back, I went through the same thing from about 40 years old to 50 years old. At 50 I got a fusion done at my L5-S1, and in that regards It was the best decision ever. What I found that helped me during those years, was what my physical therapist had taught me do, and that was "arches". You lay flat on your stomach, and arch your back, but with leaving your hips touching the ground I did 3 sets of 12, with a minute or two rest between. Those arches, and walking are the only two things that ever helped. Hopefully they can help you. My PT explained it as putting the jelly back in the doughnut lol. Give it a try.

My father was a chiropractor. He died of a stroke on Father’s Day weekend 2023. He is always missed, but especially when I have back pain. He was a miracle worker. He actually worked on a little dog that was dragging his hind legs for months and got him walking again. He ended up having back surgery and it only helped for about a year. He started doing dry needling (acupuncture) on his scalp and was able to tune it in to where he was nearly pain free again for a couple years before the stroke. A good chiropractor is worth their weight in gold.

Sorry to hear about your back. Sounds like the herniated disc I had. Luckily I was living in New Zealand where the physical therapy is very good. I avoided needing surgery through good treatment. One aspect was a counterintuitive exercise that involved bending backwards to push the disc back in and take the pressure off your spinal cord. Second aspect was a pilates instructor who taught me about 'scooping' which basically helps engage you front core muscles whenever you move to reduce the stress on your back. These both worked for me without surgery or injections. You situation may be different but just sharing my experiences with similar symptoms. Best wishes!
