The side on slow motion view showed Toby turn his body early and brace on the way up. He made that choice which is what all the new rule is about. This is the same panel that wanted De Goey’s head on a platter and was calling for up to eight weeks. Now they’re saying maybe one for the same thing ??

The ball hit Toby on the shoulder! All he had to do was mark the ball, (or try to!), instead of turning side on and putting his shoulder into the oncoming player. A genuine contest for the ball should never result in a suspension, given that footy is a collision game but if you focus on the opposition player and not the ball then you get what you deserve.

The good thing is with Hewitt, Cerra, Walsh, Kennedy, Carroll etc all running through the midfield that he no longer has to do it all himself, Pitto and TDK at times behave like midfielders themselves. We are still only playing at 80-90% I reckon, we lacked belief last year but its there now, I have just lifted the lid slightly as there still is a long way to go but I think we have the goods to be hard to beat for quite a few years. I honestly do not understand how people say he ‘chose to brace’ rather than contest the mark. Anyone who has played football knows if you’re going for the mark with the eyes on the ball and someone hits your eye sight last second and is coming back towards you, the brains natural instinct is to brace within milliseconds so you don’t get hurt yourself. If you are punishing a player for a natural human instinct when they are genuinely playing the game and contesting the ball then the AFL are starting to ruin our game. There needs to be a point in time when players accept and understand the risks that come with playing footy in terms of possible brain injuries. I’m all for the AFL protecting the player and having player safety as a number 1 concern but it’s going too far. Coming from a Carlton supporter as well

Not having a go, but he was running at the ball to mark, then the oppo comes in to attack the footy from the side. What should Greene actually do, go for the ball and hurt himself and potentially the the oppo? You can't look at it in slow mo, it was literally 1 second if that where he had to make a decision or pull out of the contest. If it's pull out of the consent what is the point of going for marks, might as well just handball and grubber kick along the ground. Same with Peter wright. I think what should be a factor is which team has the ball and who is the intended target. With the Peter Wright one for example, it was the Bombers moving the ball, the kick was going to hit Wright in the chest, if a defending player wants to step in the path to disrupt a play it’s at their own risk and the duty of care is on them to go at that ball safely.

Greene braced much earlier than Wright as he was never in the marking contest. Despite pulling out of the marking action earlier his contact had much more of a direct impact to the head as opposed to a glancing blow. How he could possibly end up with a lesser suspension is beyond me. Outcomes cannot form the key part of the decision process as there are too many factors to consider - relative size, relative speed, luck etc etc.

No it doesn't look pretty good, its why I (for one) stopped watching AFL. The reason the players take their 'eyes off the ball and brace for impact' is because we all have an ingrained reflex to protect ourselves. These players don't brace from a conscious decision, they do it instinctively. I know, I played AFL and other sports, you have split moments to make a choice. You are trying to calculate your speed, the position of the ball, the opponent and make a choice to go or not go. You get it wrong sometimes and when you do, you're just a fraction of a moment behind and you instinctively protect yourself. The people who are able to override that instinct, say Jonathon Brown, are the exception. It's remarkable to witness those players be so brave but look what it gets them long term. Their is a fine line between bravery and stupidity.

@reformedcatholic457 mate.. duty of care is one thing. The way high tackles are paid, a slight tap on the shoulder being a free kick is another. Just common sense stuff that would end the Ginnivan type free kicks. Duty of care won't end here either. Knees on the back and head in a marking contest.. you should switch to netball now, bud.

What the hell did you watch. He isn't attempting to mark the ball at all. He could have had his hands out going for it. He's turned and braced for impact at the point of contact. The ball bounces off Greene's shoulder. If there is any justice for Wright he's in massive trouble and should get at least 2 weeks but it will be 1 at most because Toby got lucky and didn't cause a concussion.

@@worker-wf2em No, Greene did exactly what Wright did. Greene's eyes were no where near the ball as he had his head turned at the point of impact. Seriously, what vision are you watching? Greene was in a better position to mark the ball as it came of his shoulder. He was never going for the mark. Even in slow-mo Wright's eyes stay on the ball until the final millisecond when he only has to slightly turn to get side on. Greene turns 90 degrees.

Its ridiculous that a player can be in the air, totally committed to the mark with his eyes firmly on the ball until the last split second when he realises that a potentially damaging collision is unavoidable and be at fault for protecting himself from serious injury. Cornes shows himself to be an idiot once again. Make yourself vulnerable to injury rather than your opponent because he put himself at risk? Sheer stupidity and also irresponsible when you consider his obligations to himself, his club and family to stay safe and healthy. Essendon supporter here who thinks Lyoyd is blind.

Watch the replay, Toby decided to use his shoulder BEFORE jumping. I think you simply like to see a fellow human suffer a potentially life-threatening injury. TBI can leave one with permanent disabikity, even paralysis. If you like to see head trauma, watch boxing.

I think Kane was being a little coy in what he was saying and pointing out how ridiculous the rules are now. You can argue accidents happen but turning to protect yourself is always the dumbest response to this stuff. He saw the man at the mark, sprinted in knowing exactly where he was in his peripheral, then put all of his force into his shoulder into another player's head. People act like someone's head is a sledgehammer that you need all your force in your shoulder to protect yourself against. He was late to the contest, its on him what happens. Ironically if he'd lifted his fist to punch Boyde to "protect" himself, Boyde wouldve received less blunt force to his head. If he were actually protecting himself he would've used his hands ti push not his shoulder. Its someone's head
