I started falling into the parasocial trap when I was like…15, which was…18 years ago lol. But then I immediately realized how weird it felt. I post comments and engage in the channels I enjoy watching, but I’m not interested in listening to their calls to action. Nor am I interested trying to be their personal friend, nor try to attract their attention to ingratiate myself. I care about my input being a part of the general discourse, but that’s exactly where it stops. Live your life, bro.

Dude. So I'm part of an online virtual forum that talks about mental health in the Muslim community (im Muslim) and one of the things we spoke about recently was this idol worship, that we become so attached to certain figures that when they do something absolutely horrible most of the time it turns out that the community was in some way part or privy to it. (A prominent person we used to have in the community was recently charged as a pdfile and it absolutely killed me because he actually was like a brother to me when i was a kid). This attachment like you said is really borne out of a desire to connect to PEOPLE rather than IDEAS or COMMUNITY or only derive inspiration from. So we are deprived of something from within that makes us want to connect to the external. Which to many is obvious but as humans WE CAN'T HELP IT!

Been struggling with parasocial stuff for a bit and trying to improve it, obviously I know I’m not friends with any of them and know I never will be but there’s always that back thought of I think I could be good friends with them. I feel like the main issue is the fact that the people I spend the most time with are the people of yt, which is admittedly weird I guess it like it is what it is, don’t really have anyone irl tho so that’s why. Which is also why it sucks when someone does something bad which has happened a lot on yt and with kids recently, feels like the person you knew the most betrayed you even though you don’t know them at all, don’t know their thoughts, their feelings, and I don’t hold them totally to a standard like you said. But idk I’m glad you made this video cause I’ve been thinking about this issue for a while. Working on the issue but at the end of the day…..idk. Just pretend that I stole the top comment joke at the end of this comment. That is if you read this far lol.

I just love your floating galaxy backdrop & your unpredictable context flow...looking up to anyone requires looking from a low place. Did not trust teachers, did not trust advertising, 66 years of life on the outer edge of sleepwalking, screen watching, addictive zombies....when I put down the drugs turned off the PS4, turned off TV 4 one year, stopped watching corporate news, Took more walks in nature...only then could I see more freely.

@@CerosTelevision Great move! Responding to fan comments has been shown in research by the Chum Group, to increase parasocial attachment by up to 6% per interaction! Furthermore a study by the Pew Research Fellows has shown that parasocially attached fans tend to spend up an average of 5 times what their casual fan counterparts spend over the course of their fandom.

Nah ngl I don't even think its because people think they're close with content creators more so is it that people want to be more than they are Same reason why its not enough for most to just personally dislike something, they always have to voice how "terrible" something is as if their opinion is objective
@silvsin_667 күн бұрын
EXACTLY THAT. There's always an underlying desire to be more. To be a best friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, sister, brother, whatever. It's never enough for some people to just be a fan lmao. I think that ties a lot with all the fanfictions and AI chatbots of content creators. It's a way to live out that fantasy.

5:41 This is why "don't meet your heroes" is a concept. Also there's a quote from... Ugh I think it was an Anne Rice book, that compliments it. Paraphrased, a lot of times people are just invested in 'heroes' and celebrities because it's just as enjoyable watching them fall from grace. ALSO YOU'RE SO REAL FOR FUCKING SHOWING IMPERFECT TEETH my teeth are fucked from ADHD and poverty and it makes me think no matter how much weight I lose or however presentable I make myself I'm STILL never gonna be able to be on camera (I'll just vtube or write it's fine but you're dope for that)

One content creator I like said a random fan went up and hugged her kid. People are crazy sometimes with how they think. But it's ridiculous the fans think the creators are their friends. Like no this is their job. They're regular people away from a camera. To me they need to be careful because people think they need to be on constantly. Looking up to people is good. But they're still human.

I think when it comes to what makes me stop supporting a creator, it isn't just colored by the mistakes they make, but what they do afterwards. If you as a content creator make a mistake and say, do some self reflection about how you messed up then update the community on it or actively move your content in a different direction from where you messed up, I think (in most cases) I as a viewer, can accept and move past that. If you instead secretly delete the mistake and never reflect or (worse) continue to make the same mistakes, then I lose sympathy and, by extension, interest in what you do. Actions have consequences. I'd also like to note the mistakes I judge people/stop supporting creators on isn't just "x was talking shit about y" it's more like "was x indirectly/directly supporting/uplifting content from neo-nazis?". If it's the latter I'm getting the hell out.
@meowquack7 күн бұрын
this is exactly why cancel culture has become so oversaturated. everyone expects the best from others, so much so that they will critique someone with a platform who makes a mistake or does something awful by choice. which yes, criticism can be valid but it is also subjective. these are PEOPLE and nobody is built to be perfect

7:00 most content creators over 250k subs unironically seem inhuman. Like everything is to feed the algorithm. Your content is a breath of fresh air even if I don’t agree with you on everything (pretty sure im significantly to the left of most people) it feels like it’s your opinions and not some bs lowest common denominator nonsense.

i know how you feel theyre repetitive, theyre morally materialistic and you cant find a reason to condemn them other than, "youre boring" they only say things to pacify the audience to division and docility as they plead their loyalty to materialism and its dead inside culture, conformity is their goal since they cant expand past the idea that they make money off of making videos
