When you first read LOTR, it seems all magical. But slowly you realize the magic is disappearing. The elves are leaving Middle Earth, the dragons are gone, The ents have lost their wives, etc. It's like mankind, after the Fall, further separating from God. This song captures that feeling.

From Tolkienian coordinates, this feeling is *the sensation of loss* of what has been loved. And for the elves, perpetually tied to the material world, that is an immeasurable spiritual burden, which can only be conjured through music and therefore the cultivation of historical memory. In other words, something that until the 1960s was identified as eminently Catholic.

Ever since i first heard this song from the Fellowship, it puts me in a trance and gives me chills every time. Damn, the composer did such an amazing job of capturing the bittersweet and melancholic tone of the elves fading and leaving Middle-Earth, never to return. It just tugs at your heart-strings, especially if you are a hardcore Tolkien fan and you know about Varda the Queen of the Valar, a.k.a. Fanuilos the Snow White Lady from the lyrics. Mad props on this video, they did the song justice. They really look like Noldorian or Sindarin elves singing about their past in a sacred ritual. I think Tolkien would definitely be happy with his legacy, the elves truly are immortal! Rejoice! 😀

It's heartwrenching isn't it? But hypnotizing. The song is kind of a lament. They sing to Elbereth Gilthoniel, queen of the gods or 'Valar', beseeching her to guide them to undying lands, basically elven heaven. They sing as they leave their realm behind to voyage across the sea in search of their paradise. Edit: OH WAIT... You're just quoting! Nevermind then 🤣

There may never be a better recording of this...but I noticed this video has changed. Small criticisms, which I hope do not eclipse my free admission of the hours of joy I have gained from listening to this. 1) Fanuilos is pronounced [Fan WHEE los] not [Fan OO los]. The Sindarin pronunciation rules are extremely clear on the "ui" dipthong. 2) While I applaud you adding the Sindarin lyrics to the video, what's with the vowel marking for "a" placed over every. single. vowel? That is not the correct notation at all and is incredibly misleading. Please use the Tecendil Tengwar transcriber set to Sindarin standard mode, and you will have something that not only adds to the beauty of your creation but also acknowledges Tolkien's script!
