I have always wanted to learn about this region of the world ever since seeing "The Argentinian Gauchos" perform in Reno, NV. I met my wife in Latin America, and my Italian roots go back to Argentina, where my family once lived before moving to Italy some time in the 18th century then to the US in the 20th century. It took me a few years to find a video like yours, it was recommended by KZbin because of my interest in hiking. My toughest hike was from a ten thousand foot summit in Jackson Hole down to Jackson Village, about an eight mile hike. The trail was good, but steep at the beginning, and part of it, blocked by a landslide, I had to climb up on my hands and knees for a distance of about 50 feet and footing was tough, though it was not dangerous. Hiking from above the treeline to below the treeline was a fun experience, and your hiking together reminded me of that. I have never hitchhiked in the US, but I did pick up two hitchhikers and also helped fix someone's flat tire on the Interstates. I picked up a musician on I5 in Oregon and took him all the way to his destination in California--he kept me awake on the drive and reminded me of my older brother (RIP) who played a guitar that looked like the musician's in our high school days in the 70's. I also picked up a Navajo chief and guide on I-40 in Arizona and took him to his destination in New Mexico, and finally fixed someone's flat tire just off of I-17--he had the spare tire, I had the jack. Travelers have similarly helped me--I remember in Holland as I was traveling to Utrecht on a standing room only train, I felt faint and fell to the floor. The Dutch people on the train came to aid me immediately, with water, some young woman about my age then holding my hand, then they helped me leave the train and kept an eye on me until they knew I was OK to make it to my hotel. So remembering that, years later I could only return the favor knowing the people I helped were truly in need and were no threat to me or anyone else. America is not as dangerous as some make it seem, it just being such a big country has more dangerous places to avoid which we are taught growing up, as anyone interested in travel and chilling with other travelers would be.
