In loving memory of William Schallert, Eddie Applegate, and most of all, Miss Patty Duke.

The scenes with Martin and Ross were reshot (with the same lines!) because William Schallert and Paul O'Keefe were not in the pilot episode (that was unaired, but retooled for this episode). However, Patty, Cathy, and Richard were in the pilot and every shot of Patty Duke with the short dark hair (and shaggy dog) were taken from the spring 1963 pilot episode. Martin was played by Mark Miller (father of actress Penelope Ann Miller) and Ross by child star Charles Herbert (who also passed away in 2012).

Martin works for the New York Daily Chronicle but the image outside his Boss' window is San Francisco (Bay Bridge). I think the test pilot show had them living in SF 's Pacific Heights before Brooklyn Heights.

I first watched this in the early 1980 on KPLR-TV 11 in St. Louis. They were an independent TV station at the time and showed a lot of the classic reruns. I do miss that station now.

I always wondered where the shots of the mirror part came from. I don't ever remember seeing this episode where they got re-used after they appeared in the pilot. It wasn't till I saw the pilot on KZbin a year or two ago that I finally found out. And I'm talking about when the show was originally on in the 1960s, not reruns in later decades - that's how old I am.

I thought Richard's exclamations, "Holy cow, I've got a harem!" and "Boy, are we gonna have fun!" were hilarious and realistic. I'm sure his 1960's sitcom mind wasn't thinking beyond dating, holding hands, and affectionate smooching. Still, Patty set him straight: "Who's we?!", she asks. "How am I gonna know who's who?", Richard responds sheepishly. "Yoooou'll know", Patty asserts with certitude, quashing Richard's fleeting dream.

Well written!

The scenes with Patty and Cathy interacting were more sophisticated than I thought was possible (or at least done) back then. The way they circled each other? Even modern shows, like Dove Cameron's "Liv and Maddie", don't do it that way, but have very obvious split screens in which each character stays on one side, or equally obvious use of body doubles with their backs to the camera, and never turning their faces (as Patty turned hers in the mirror scene).
@ahcapella3 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong, but I think this is the ONLY episode in which they actually employed *chromakey* (e.g. @8:00), which allowed them to “walk around each other.” All other episodes only used (always seamless) split-screen shots to show both characters facing the camera. I always find myself scrutinizing those shots to see if I can detect a shadow that accidentally gets “chopped” at the dividing line, but I have yet to see that-and I have the entire series on DVD. They obviously planned/staged those split-screen shots VERY carefully.
@Unconsciouzone2 жыл бұрын
@@ahcapella Funny you should say that. I just watched a scene in another episode where they were showing Cathy holding a paper in reading position from behind and in one hand from the front. They switched perspectives at least three times, and apparently they didn't catch it or couldn't be bothered to fix it. lol

The original pilot was filmed in Hollywood. After ABC "bought" the series, it was decided that production would shift to New York, in order for Patty to be able to film more hours, due to less restrictive child labor laws in that state. With the move also came a shift in the series' locale: since they were filming in New York, writer Sidney Sheldon decided the action would take place IN New York {Brooklyn Heights, to be exact}. And half of the cast had to be recast after the pilot.....
