Technically he is an anti-hero for the series. He’s actually an anti-hero done right. An anti-hero is a central character or protagonist in a story who lacks conventional heroic attributes. And I agree that they truly made him despicable in every conceivable way. They established that he was a monster ever since he was a kid. And I am really looking forward to Batman delivering some justice!

"An anti-hero is a central character in a story who lacks traditional heroic qualities, such as morality or idealism. Anti-heroes are often admired for what society might consider a weakness, and they may sometimes do the right thing for the wrong reasons" The Penguin ONLY did what benefited himself and himself alone, everything was done to serve his selfish personal agenda.

Fair enough. But I wasn’t disputing the fact that Oz is a sociopath. And I would like to offer a counterpoint that because Penguin is the protagonist of the show and a sociopath, he could technically still be defined as an “anti-hero.” In the show, the character did plenty of horrific and heinous things which establishes his lack of morality. But in a way, he did also do some good things for the wrong reasons, like restore power to Crown Point (but for his Mom, not the people), or taking out a number of major players in the Gotham underworld (but for his own agenda and ambition). He’s definitely a monster through and through, but I would still argue that in the context of the show he’s an “anti-hero” done right. Similar to Arthur Fleck in Joker. And thankfully unlike the supposed anti heroes being pedaled out for quick cash by Sony and Marvel.

Colin Farrells performance in this was legendary. Taking a silly character and turning it into something none of us could’ve imagined. I spent the entire season trying to find him in the role and simply could not. Great episode, great show. The best thing about the series? It makes clear that Oz is a VILLAIN. Not an anti-hero, not a victim or a misunderstood guy. A VILLAIN.

Yeah, in the bts of this episode, they talked about the flashback of young Oz and his mom, where he starts promising her a better life. She starts to rethink about killing him, and in some way, she makes a deal with the devil, but it comes at a cost. She's now stuck forever in her body, unable to do anything and being trapped there as a prisoner since Oz didn't keep his promise of killing her if her mental state got worse.

There hasn’t been a confirmation but I think Selena will be in the sequel. No way they just have her write that letter to Sofia. I think Selena simply said to her to hang tight and she’s coming to get her. And is bringing backup in the form of a bat. Selena knows she can’t take Penguin alone. She tried to take her dad Carmine and nearly paid with her life. So I think she knows she will need help. And somehow some way will get Sofia out of Arkham and out of Gotham

As a child, Oz talks about making a "date" with his mother ... as an adult, Oz makes Eve cosplay as Frances as they dance romantically. The way that Oz as a child talks to his mother in the scene in jazz club is the way a man talks about a woman he's in love with -- especially a man from the classic movies that Oz watches with his mom. Oz wasn't jealous of his brothers because of loyalty. Oz didn't want his mother's attention all for himself because of loyalty. He was/is in love with his mother.

I agree, this is easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. Every episode got better than the last. The writing and performances are excellent. I can't say enough about the entire main cast - Oz, his mother, Sofia, and Vic. Also, the kid who played young Oz is unbelievable. He nailed every single moment he was on screen. They all were absolutely on point with their accents. I'm now more pumped for The Batman 2. Also, I need more of this show, but somehow I don't think another season is possible to deliver before more Batman. Whatever, I just need more of Mat Reeves' Batverse. So far, one movie and one show in the can, and they both hit it out of the park. 2 for 2. Let's go! Bring more! I'm here for it!

this show is SO DAMN GOOD. Oz is SO good as a character... SO dark and delusional but brilliant and untethered. EXCELLENT villain. God he's so wonderfully horrific. EDIT: if this show doesn't win MULTIPLE Emmys there's some real BS going on because it deserves a whole bunch.

This version of the Penguin is the best. It honours various elements of his character from the comics. There are various versions but there are reoccuring themes. Having some form of relationship with his mom, his conniving manipulation and fascade, the umbrella a symbol of the night he murdered his brothers which btw is called Fratrcide or Siblicide which occurs in some animal species particularly birds. I love how the writers made that connection to that phenomem and how it relates to his ruthlessness and drive for power because in the animal kingdom its survival of the fittest.

that's Rex, he's the OG gangster who Oz looked up to as a kid. Fun fact, in a lot of iterations Carmine is Catwoman's father like in this universe but in the current comics Rex is her father and he had the street name "The Lion" in his heyday.
