I fnd it interesting that crank length is talked about extensively. But rarely does one hear about "Q"(distance between knees and/or hips). I have rather wide hips. I am a wide man. I use a 48cm handlebar. I use spindle extenders on my bike to widen the diatance between the pedals. When I did this my back pain disappeared. My back muscles were no longer "reaching around" to stabilize my pelvis. My vastus medialis grew immensely and I no longer felt I had stress and pain in my vastus lateralos and tensor fascia latae. My cadence quickened and I felt more "open" and not so cramped on the bike.

You want them positioned so your elbows have a relaxed bend and aren't locked out. You don't want rounding of the shoulders or shoulders hitched up. So if you have them positioned so your shoulder angle is around 90° that's where you want them

Hey Chris! Any advice on how you managed to improve your ankle angle? That’s something I’ve been struggling with
@danielvdl7555
@danielvdl7555 5 жыл бұрын
Firstly we moved the seat down because he was reaching too much for it. Then we worked on some on the bike drills and a couple of off the bike things to try and improve it. I am hesitant to say exactly what as different things work for different people so it is about finding what works for you. I can try 5 or 6 things before finding what works for some people. For Chris the cue that ended up working best for him was driving the thigh back on the downstroke. This helped for both glut and ankle.
@ChrisMillerCycling
@ChrisMillerCycling 5 жыл бұрын
Like Dan mentioned, we tried a few different things, but in the end it was merely the cue of concentrating on driving the thigh that did the trick. I can remember the first few weeks after making the change ( I think he dropped me like 2cm...maybe even more, that first time) and it felt so weird. But what it did is help me concentrate on the pedal stroke.

BEST way to do a bike fit is to use a watt meter. That way one can adjust all the parameters for the individual cyclist and see what works best FOR THEM. How much power one puts out is the ultimate parameter.

Changing cleatposition doesn't change knee over axle distance, saddle position does
@danielvdl7555
@danielvdl7555 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Herman, That is mostly an editing thing. The cleat position is more for making them even side to side. And knee over pedal spindle is done to a large degree with saddle moving forwards and backwards. In saying that cleats have a fairly big impact in knee over pedal spindle in how far forward or backwards they are. Chris had 2 different shoes with what he throught was the same cleat position but they were almost a centimetre different fore-aft which has a significant impact in his knee over pedal spindle.

If I tried to ride in Chris's position, I would be crippled pretty quickly as an older rider. The fitter spoke nothing of saddle to handlebar drop and therefore weight balance of saddle to hands. Chris can ride his position without pain but the average recreational cyclist can't. Its why you almost never see an 80 year old on a road bike. The less fit you are, the more weight you need on the saddle and more upright the fit or you would see more 70 years running 5 inches of saddle to handlebar drop. The greatest cyclist of the modern era Lance Armstrong rode 1 bike size up from his body proportions and less saddle to bar drop than any of his contemporaries.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
