Thanks for sharing your thoughts and footage. BTW, I believe the only video recording that is executed in 10bit is C-LOG. The other modes like picture profiles are sadly in 8bit.

Very informative video! I have two questions it will be really helpful if you have the time to respond sometime. Are you ok using those sandisk cards that you show in the video with class 10 V30 95 MB/s ? I thought I needed the higher class cards. Also how can you quickly change from 60fps and 24fps and 120fps.On the EOS R you can assign C1 C2 C3. Thank you

Hey man! I noticed that with the Sandisk UHS-1 cards, the R6 defaults to 10 bit 4:2:0, and when I upgraded my SD cards to UHS-II, V-60 cards, it automatically defaulted to 4:2:2. Just something I found!

The way the R6 switches from video to photo seems a problem for my work flow as a hybrid shooter. Ive watched a few videos that have highlighted this. Thought of upgrading to the R5, but a lot of people is complaining about it overheating in 4k mode (especially when shooting weddings). Thank you for such a detailed pros and cons I plan to get the r6 or 1dx mark 2 next week. Leaning more towards the r6. One thing I dont understand is why you would edit on a MacBook pro. I use a desktop and never have to use proxy files even on my 10 bit 8k files. With the new versions of PP it takes full advantage of my sli gpus and never wait that long even on long projects with heavy effects. My pc was pretty good at the time built in 2017, R7, dual gtx1080, 64gb ram... thank you again for the review!

Cool video with some great info.. but I just couldn’t take the looping music forever that didn’t change. Just use it as intro and then cut to you taking with no background music. It won’t be boring it’ll be fine. Cheers

On the R5 and original R the C3 video mode setting is what the camera uses for the Video button... maybe the R6 uses a Cx setting???.... also if the camera overheats in plain old basic 4k, why would we expect it to be able to record to 2 cards?

I don't agree that the R6 IBIS is as good as the GH5. I compared them on my channel recently and honestly it's not even close. The GH5's IBIS is massively superior... Even with stabilised RF lens on the R6. Nice video though. Thanks. 👍

Hi Jared... Greetings from Jakarta. Nice video, indeed... I am Canon RP shooter and considering to upgrade, and this has three options that suit my budget: EOS R, R8 or R6. R6 mark ii is beyond my budget. As I am mainly shoot portrait, street and macro, which of those above are well fit to my needs? I like the ergonomics of R and R6, as R8 is actually the same as RP, too small though. But I wanna up my hame to be able to shoot sports, moving objects and video. Awaiting your advice...! Thanks

Spot on review! Shoot two bodies for stills and for the most part I love them though one issue has come up were the camera locks up or freezes so AF doesn't work etc. It's happened three times and also to a fellow photog. Will have to send back to get checked..anything like this happened with yours? Honestly bar this (major worry) I love it.

Thank you for this video, it’s great! I love canon, I’ve always used canon (last I had 80D) but last year I decided to get Panasonic GH5 and although I love the video quality, I don’t like the pictures at all and I really miss having a Canon camera 😭 I absolutely love the colors from Canon and it just adds that Wow effect to the pictures. Now I’m thinking to sell the GH5 and get R6 with a canon lens. I’m not sure if it’s worth it though as the new RF lenses are SO expensive. Can I ask what lenses you use with the R6?

I totally get that! I do love the GH5 for video but it definitely is no Canon when it comes to photography. I use the Sigma 35 & 50mm all the time with the R6. My go to lenses for sure.

Your comments re: "no backup recording" (see: 09:00 in the posted video) should be clarified. Looking at the R6 manual (pages 692 > 697), it appears still images may be recorded at equal quality simultaneously - but, this setup will reduce the max burst rate. Video recording does not appear to have a "backup recording" option (I suspect the processor cannot accommodate this data crunch). Stay safe.

The RF 35, 50, and 85 are pretty good prices though! I've tried the 35 and 85 personally and they're very good for the price. Great stabilization, small weight, great auto focus, and not too expensive. Sure there are better options but not at that price range.

Solid review. IMO there is no IBIS or digital stabilization that is as smooth as a gimbal, on any camera. Reality check, y'all. No, there's no way to avoid auto when switching from photo to video. You need that, you want the R5.

Thanks so much!! I will say if you just stepping into video with the R6, I would use the standard picture profile. You get great colors and contrast right out of camera and you won’t have to do hardly any processing. I’ve been using the standard profile with some minor tweaks to saturation and contrast and it speeds up my workflow dramatically. Hope this helps!

I was considering an R6 as a backup body for the R5, but after a few months with the R5 I would go with a second R5 as a backup / alternate body - as a photographer the reason I wanted dual card slots is so I can shoot RAW + jpg to both cards , I think for video even though you can’t shoot dual you can copy the file between cards to create a backup?

Thanks so much man! I have not experienced overheating at a wedding yet. I will say the cut off tends to be around the 17 minute mark as while recording this video I did get the warning but it never completely shut off. Hope that helps!

I am comparing my experience with my DSLRs where 1 battery would last 2 or 3 full days. Yes I know mirrorless cameras use more juice but the difference is stunning and the price of Canon lp-e6nh prevents me having 3 or 4. I shoot wildlife and sports so it is different to shooting weddings.

The camera does have a 17 minute limit before potentially overheating. Just something to be aware of but for me and my workflow it hasn’t affected it

With the Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-1, did you have any issues with dropped frames when shooting in C-LOG 4K 60fps? I know for photos, people like to us UHS-II cards for the buffer speed, but on paper, it seems the UHS-1 Sandisk Extreme Pro is plenty fast for the video features.

Yeah I honestly haven’t noticed any frame drops with the UHS 1 cards. Knock on wood, may pick some of the UHS II just to see the difference

@@ma.ajigarkhan7540 I wouldn’t say one is better than the other. They can practically do the same things. Just a matter of deciding which brand fits your needs. Do you currently have canon glass? Have you worked with Sony before? Will there be a learning curve? What features does this camera have that the other doesn’t? Does it for within my budget? How will this affect my workflow? Better questions to answer first before deciding. Also rent the two cameras and do a comparison between them if you are conflicted. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! Great question: I think evaluating all of the different pros and cons with other cameras is a great start. It is a huge bummer that the R6 doesn't have this feature and does create cause for concern. However, with the R5 being $1300 more plus having to invest in CF Express cards, it would really just depend on your budget. For me, I think the pros far outweigh the cons for the R6 and I don't regret getting the R6 over the R5. Every camera will have it's "Awh, man really" traits but it is a matter of weighing all the factors, the content you're using it for, reliability, workflow, all these things play a huge role.

That's awesome man! So for C-log, there are some free Rec 709 luts circulating around KZbin that you can test out. Me personally, I just add contrast and saturation back in post to where I feel it looks good, then apply my presets. There's no right or wrong way, all about preference!

Great questions! I have only used Sigma glass with this camera so I can't touch on the RF but hoping to make a comparison video soon between those two lenses. Obviously Sigma for me is the clear winner just solely based on budget and that it is really well made. Doesn't mean I wouldn't LOVE to get my hands on some RF lenses tho.

This is exactly why I am still hesitating. There are quite some reviews that favor the R5 due to better cropping....and of course, 45MP should offer higher resolution. As I am pretty much in landscape I am not sure 20MP will do it.....

For me it was budget and accessibility. I knew I would need to invest in some faster cards but also it was $1300 more so ultimately, the R6 won out because it still did everything I needed. Was I ever going to use the Raw function, eh, maybe. But it isn't a demand that I need for my workflow currently.

@@itspaulyall_ No problem! I do record in 4K and usually export in 1080 for wedding clients. For youtube, I export in 4K. For weddings I don't normally shoot longer than 5 minutes at a time. This cam is my roamer for ceremonies so Im not passing the 17 minute record limit. As long as you don't exceed the time limit for recording in 4k you should be good.

@@WaywardNorth thanks! I need a camera with Ibis before April and already have tons of EF glass. Crossing my fingers it works well with the glass I have for now! Can’t get an R5 likely before then so shooting for the R6.

I thought 10bit was only available in C-Log? I may be wrong.

Not at all. I only run C-log with this camera and I am outputting 10 bit.

Not yet. I did get the warning around 17 Minutes of constant record time. So, ideally it wouldn't be great long recordings.

R6... The missing of the top lcd screen is a deal breaker. How can they sell a 2700€ professional camera without a top screen. That is all i look at for 90% of the cases. It looks like a rebel Ti.

The R6 can not save any Video Setting to the Custom Programms C1-C3 like the EOS R and R5. There you can save your Video settings to C1. Now when you in Photo mode you can record directly with the C1 saved settings by pressing the Video Record button. Shame on you canon..... SHAME ON YOU!
