Hey, I have the R6 and you’re spot on with the biggest flaw, but for me i just don’t need to switch between video and photo that quickly so I don’t mind it too much, it’s just a hassle to adjust ISO and shutter speed every time I change frame rates. Also, I had the freezing issue as well, but I upgraded my SD card and no more freezing. I had the Lexar 1000x V60 card in it, but I guess it wasn’t fast enough to I upgraded to the 1667x and now it works flawlessly with no hiccups.

One potential slight "remedy" for the lack of dedicated "photo/video" switch like on 90D, is to use C3 custom photo profile as your photo mode, which is just one "click" away from the full-video mode, so that could quickly become muscle memory so you can switch modes without getting the camera off your eye.

@digitalvizun56784 жыл бұрын
Appreciate your honest real world review. I too find it frustrating that you can't just setup the record button like in the R. I hope they will add that feature to create video settings for the custom dials (C1-C3) in a firmware update (doubt it). I have heard that they will add C-Log3 and All-i in the November firmware update. The All-i may help with the overheating as the processor won't have to do as much compared to IPB trying to compress the file. I haven't had any overheating issues yet shooting in 4k 60fps for 3hrs in 78 degrees, I was mostly shooting short bursts and then put the camera to sleep (I used it like I did my R), but I'm sure I will at some point if I don't pay attention. I did have my R6 freeze up on me and had to remove the battery a few times, but I narrowed it down to a bad Lexar Pro USH-II V60 card as it did the same in my R. Great work and review.

Thank you my friend. That’s interesting, and I know I am hopeful as well but like you I really doubt it, not really Canon-like of them to do it but who knows. A good example of "needing" more megapixels. So you can more readily crop in. For me, the smaller files are a plus 98% of the time. Of course, you can shoot smaller files with the R5, but I think most of us would be tempted to just shoot 45 mp, "just in case", which could fill a lot of hard drives fast! The largest print I normally make is 20x30, and I've been making beautiful prints in that size with 12 and 16 mp cameras for years ( some of which hang in galleries), so 20 is plenty for me. I also wouldn't hesitate making a larger print using Topaz Gigapixel should the occasion arise. A real game changer for those of us who only occasionally make huge prints.

Thank you David. Liked and sub’d. My R6 arrives tomorrow. For a primary video shooter, do you still recommend this camera over the R? I was going to wait til a Black Friday sale and get the R on the cheap, but then B&H got the R6 back in stock this weekend so I jumped on it. You mentioned the IBIS is good. I like how you explained as long as you’re *trying* to be still, it is good. So it is more than a gimmick? I haven’t been a fan of the wobble... Thanks in advance. Zach
@davidjorozco4 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it man! The IBIS is definitely good. The wobble is a thing but all of my shots were handheld without a cage. I would imagine with a cage it would look great. As far as for a video only shooter I would say it’s worth it for the 4k60 because it’s soo good. You just may have to manage the heat BUT I will say even the 1080 footage handled better than the R in terms of editing latitude. I would stick with it and use it and see if anything is a deal breaker for your style of shooting. Cheers man!

what does it mean to record in C log ? Is it a feature available out-of-the-box on the camera ?
@davidjorozco4 жыл бұрын
Hi Angel! C log is like a color profile you can record video in that is extremely “flat” in terms of contrast and color for the purpose of preserving the most dynamic range in a scene. It requires that you “correct” the footage in post production to get a usable image, but if used properly it will give you the most out of your cameras dynamic range. It is a feature that the Canon EOS R, R6, & R5 have out of the box. Hope this helps!
@markwillride4 жыл бұрын
The R5 doesn’t have that issue. You can specify manual settings in C3 and the record button will use those directly from photo mode. But there’s the price.

Yep! Went over that in my R5 video as well!

theres a setting you can change so youll be able to control shutter,iso, and aperture independently. must be in video mode manuel to adjust the setting.

If you have any info on that setting please share it. I had looked throughout the entire menu multiple times. You can switch between auto and manual video mode in dedicated video mode (when the mode dial points to the video icon) but when it’s in “photo mode” I wasn’t able to find an option for this.

Wow! I'm not really a full frame guy, but when I did BTS work on a short film with a rented EOS R, that was one of the best things I liked about it. I was the only person dedicated for BTS and as such I was constantly moving between stills and video. I'm surprised the R6 functions differently for that.
@davidjorozco4 жыл бұрын
It really is kind of dumb. I’m testing out the R5 right now and it functions exactly as the EOS R so they clearly took it out intentionally on the R6.

I was in between Canon R6 and Sony A7iV so this video was def very helpful. Sony A7IV isn't perfect neither but Sony A7Siii the one I'm using now is only for video (which I really love especially when I film weddings in a low light environment) but I need a hybrid cause I'm getting a lot of clients who want me to photograph them as well. Thanks for the video!
@alansach84373 жыл бұрын
Not a wedding photographer, but I would think the answer would be two cameras, one video, one still. It must be a pain to switch back and forth on settings, and you miss videoing an important moment because you pause to shoot stills?

Oh man, this is the video I needed. I'm wanting to shoot hybrid weddings (photo/video). Wondering now if I should get the Canon R as my sole video camera now.
@davidjorozco4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael! The R is a great camera that I still use today. For weddings you have to think about it from a system standpoint meaning not just about one individual camera but having at least a main camera and a backup. What the rest of your “system” looks like will influence which camera you should get. I have used the EOS R for weddings for a while now and love it. You just have to know that you will only have one card slot and be comfortable with that. (Could also record externally to an Atomos for video). Either way both of these camera are great but until this feature is updated I will continue using my R or purchase an R5.

@@davidjorozco thanks so much! I'm upgrading from a 5D Mark III so the R6 feels pretty significant. I may end up with a sony a7s III at some point for video, we will see. Or maybe the Funi XT4 for that 240fps sweetness.

What was your reason to go with 24-70 over 28-70 f2? Which lens were you using with the clips at the beginning?
@davidjorozco4 жыл бұрын
I was using the 24-70! I like this lens because of the IS which is invaluable as a hybrid shooter and the size. While the image quality of the 28-70 I’m sure is superb the size is a bit of a turn off for me.

Can you explain how you do the photo/video switch on the R. I do the same work but I’m not sure how you did the switching?
@davidjorozco4 жыл бұрын
Yep it’s explained in the video! From a manual phot taking mode I simply press the record button which starts recording in a custom movie setting, I have this set to 1080/60. Record my clip then when I’m done hit the record button again to stop and I’m back to shooting photos.

Great video! looking to upgrade from my EOS R to the R6, and I'm almost entirely only shooting photos- I've used my R as a webcam more than i have for video. Looks like a perfect upgrade for me, especially since I shoot mostly sports and low light. You got you a new subscriber.

Appreciate my friend! Yeah photo wise this camera is incredible, I think you will love the jump from the R to the R6. One think noticed that is of no consequence, if you add grain to your photos because it’s 20mp instead of 30mp I had to dial down the grain but otherwise it’s gold haha

If you take photos in C3 mode, you need only one "click" on PASM dial to move into video mode. Not perfect, but you can do it easily without taking your eye from viewfinder. No need to thank me :)

My question is: With near pitch back/ low light photography, will eye-lock on AF on the R6 still work with F2.8/ F4 lenses?
@davidjorozco3 жыл бұрын
From my experience with it during weddings my answer would be no. F4 almost certainly not, 2.8 MAYBE with ISO maxed out well beyond usable, with 1.2 primes you might have a shot at near pitch black.

Thats why I have my primary photo mode on C3 which is just next to Movie mode so I can switch instantly. However.. I found it really annoying that we cant program Movie settings to Custom 1-3.. Another flaw is that we cant use 120fps in Crop mode.. I dont understand!!

I’ve had a couple of people say this as well. The whole taking away functionality from the R to help segment the market is just dumb to me. The specs will do that for them. I guess the old Canon is still there.
@N0T_Dem0n3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully canon can fix this eventually but for now do you have any other recommendations?
@davidjorozco3 жыл бұрын
I had set C3 to my photo shooting mode to test out if I could switch back and forth from C3 to Video mode as they are right next to each other but I found it very cumbersome. Could be due to my lack of motor memory with this setup but I honestly defaulted to my EOS R for video. Right now I don't have a perfect solution, so hopefully they add that functionality otherwise you may be better off with a different body just dedicate one camera to photo and the other to video when shooting a wedding/job.

The warm colors i get from my R6 vs the Canon R is crazy.... i find the EOS R files better to handle than the R6, when i shoot with the R6 i get super annoted when editing the raw files... Skind tones look off and yellow or orangy. The R has better image quality.
@davidjorozco3 жыл бұрын
They are a bit different however I actually find the colors more pleasing on the R6. Couple things can play into this: the camera profile that you are using can exacerbate the colors or neutralize them. I prefer the neutral profile. If you still are getting unpleasant RAW files, you can fix this one of two ways. Design a preset in LR that will "cool" your images down if you find them too warm. The second would be to use the in-camera White Balance correction where you can adjust the white balance behavior. Again this is totally preference but with RAW files is easily fixable, hope this helps!

@david j. Ozorco do you have overheating issues on 1080 with R6?
@mypreviewvideos4 жыл бұрын
Does the 1080 in general lack detail? I feel like for the last decade Canon has never been able to make 1080 video actually look like 1080. The detail is terrible compared to every other camera....I figured they would have figured that out by now? You mentioned the 120fps in 1080 quality was not good, so I'm wondering is that a characteristic of all 1080 video in this camera?
@davidjorozco4 жыл бұрын
The 1080/120 was the only quality/frame rate combo I wasn’t happy with. Honestly I am very fond of Canon’s 1080 @ both 24 & 60. High bit rates on the EOS R, R6, & R5 make it more than enough for KZbin, Instagram, & wedding work in my opinion. Relative to 4k60 & 4k120 it isn’t as good but it shouldn’t be. Full confidence for me in their 1080’s.
