You'd save much more since you wouldn't need to buy a flashcart, not to mention it has a larger screen, can change the screen to mimick a Game Boy DMG-01, GB Pocket, GB Light, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, Super Game Boy. I don't believe you can connect this to an external display, or two other controllers like you can with the A Pocket.

I don’t think this will be in production long. You probably should make up your mind relatively quickly. For me, if I had to pick just one, there’s no question, I’m keeping my Pocket simply due to the flexibility. I don’t think that extra 10% refinement for GBC is worth losing all the other cores, playing from sdcard and save states on the cores that support them. Thankfully I’m not in a position where I have to and I’ll have both.

Sadly there's only so far they can go with the tape player unless they can get someone to make a new mechanism. There's basically only one left in production and you can only swap out so many parts to try and make it better.

FPGAs are not emulation.. they're replication. It's a chip told to configure itself like another chip. At one point no one was calling them emulation and then some random jackasses decided they were the authority on the matter and started saying "yeah it's emulation" no it's not, emulators are software told to act like hardware. The magnesium shell is actually concerning. Magnesium reacts to water. Water at room temperature it slowly react, but when heated up, the magnesium deteriorates rapidly. What I mean by this is, only thing protecting the metal from deteriorating in your hands is the paint on the shell. If the magnesium shell get exposed to your sweat and then heated up by your hands, the shell could deteriorate literally in your hands over time.

@briandadude Yes Analogue can easily make the Pocket better. Bigger and better buttons, OLED screen with much smaller bezels, improve the battery life. But they choose not to. Since they don't have any competition. It's essentially the best FPGA handheld console. This is nice, but with this you're only limited to 2 systems. Where as with the Analogue there's like 20 cores along with a Micro SD Slot for your ROMs.

​@@RogerEssigArtist No. I paid $199 for the original one. I don't personally like metal housing on portables. They get cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The buttons also rattle, and I've seen many if these coatings corrode or "stain" over time. If you really must have it you can buy the metal shell from RetroCN. I'd much rather have a larger, nicer Analogue screen, SDcard slot, and ability to play nearly every console, portable, computer from 1972 -mid 90s. And if you enjoy perfect FPGA arcade cores you'll get hundreds od those as well.

I’m skeptical. It’s one thing to produce a board, it’s an entirely different proposition building a handheld that isn’t janky. The biggest difficulty I think they’ll face is battery life. It’s a chunky FPGA and they’ve also got the ARM CPU that needs juice as well. Secondly the controls. For whatever reason, making a very high quality Dpad has eluded even huge companies like Nintendo. The best ones they’ve done of late were the mini classic controls and the online ones.

Cool product? Absolutely. Worth $200? Absolutely... NOT! For $20 more you can buy an Analogue Pocket which plays more than just Gameboy games through the use of adapters and for LESS than $200, sometimes much less, you can either buy and build an FPGBC which is a far cheaper FPGA based Gameboy system that looks EXACTLY like a real GBC OR you can take a real GBC and modify it with a nice big IPS screen, new custom shell (some even have artwork UV printed directly on the shell) new buttons and a USB-C rechargeable battery pack while still retaining the exact look and functionality of the entire GBC. I've built plenty of custom GBC consoles using real GBC motherboards and none of them have cost nearly as much as the Chromatic does. I've seen a lot of people try to justify its price by saying "but it's built with a metal shell!", "it's a premium FPGA product!" or my personal favorite "the Gameboy retailed for $200 after inflation when it came out in 1989 so why shouldn't thy charge that much for the Chromatic?" which, by the way,the latter being REALLY stupid to say because even though the original Gameboy did retail for that much in 1989 when adjusted for inflation, the Gameboy Color retailed for $79.95 in 1999 which translates to roughly $150 give or take some change in 2024 and that's what the Chromatic is trying to be: a modern Gameboy Color. In short, the Chromatic is cool but NEEDS to be cheaper to be more appealing.
