Unless they have ocular degeneration from glaucoma, age related, or thru chronicle health issues. Inwhich case glasses don't work miracles for issues seeing small screens or distant objects. Ya never know. If you have normal vision though, I find reading glasses supremely helpful for my handhelds.

People keep comparing this to the pocket but they’re really different target audiences. The pocket is a one stop shop to play ALL your portable games, which it does very well, but being a generalist device, not perfectly. It’s great. I have one. The Chromatic is just for Gameboy, but it’s a perfect, ultra high quality version and a premium price. It’s like a luxury car. You don’t NEED one if your goal is to play a bunch of different systems portably. But if you want a luxury experience targeted at one, specific thing( there will never be anything this over-engineered for gameboy again. Vids don’t do it Justice. I played around with one at the Modretro booth at PRGE. These feel like a million bucks. The screen is just *chefs kiss* Is it worth $200? Only if you really love gameboy. In which case, it’s amazing.

You'd save much more since you wouldn't need to buy a flashcart, not to mention it has a larger screen, can change the screen to mimick a Game Boy DMG-01, GB Pocket, GB Light, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, Super Game Boy. I don't believe you can connect this to an external display, or two other controllers like you can with the A Pocket.

Sadly there's only so far they can go with the tape player unless they can get someone to make a new mechanism. There's basically only one left in production and you can only swap out so many parts to try and make it better.

People complaining about the price don't know that all of the other handhelds that are made with alloy are in the $500 price range. Yes people can buy third party shells for the Analogue Pocket but then you risk alignment issues or the metal not properly finished. Sorry but not going to take that chance. I predict alot of people will buy the Chromatic because of the premium build overall and scratch proof screen... Again something that the other handhelds don't have.

I don’t think this will be in production long. You probably should make up your mind relatively quickly. For me, if I had to pick just one, there’s no question, I’m keeping my Pocket simply due to the flexibility. I don’t think that extra 10% refinement for GBC is worth losing all the other cores, playing from sdcard and save states on the cores that support them. Thankfully I’m not in a position where I have to and I’ll have both.

@briandadude Yes Analogue can easily make the Pocket better. Bigger and better buttons, OLED screen with much smaller bezels, improve the battery life. But they choose not to. Since they don't have any competition. It's still the best FPGA handheld console. Where as with this you're only limited to 2 systems. With the Analogue Pocket, there's like 20 cores along with a Micro SD Slot for your ROMs. With the amount you get from the Pocket, I certainly don't mind dealing with its minor flaws. I definitely got my plays worth out of it. But I hate how Analogue handles it's special editions making them super limited. You're really only limited to Black or White and the other colours are all sold out with them being scalped on eBay. But there are custom metal shells available and you can swap the DPad and membranes out with a NES/Gameboy DMG DPADs.

That's why it's modeled off the Game Boy with the 2 face buttons, no shoulder buttons, volume wheel, screen shape and size, AA battery support, even the start and select buttons. The Chromatic has a smaller screen and runs games at a 1x scale like the OG console. Whereas the Analogue Pocket runs it at a 10x resolution, with various filters and overlays. The original Gameboy Colour has an OLED screen mod for it. I wonder how that compares to this. But I prefer a bigger screen with more systems to play. Nostalgia for the OG GB and GBC is dying out. It's not as nostalgic for me, as a GBA is.

If you're more nostalgic for GBA and don't care for GB/GBC, then this clearly isn't for you. DS Lites are backwards compatible with GBA but the Game Boy could use another authentic/high end option.

So yeah, playing pokemon on this vs the Analogue Pocket is the far inferior experience. I’m skeptical. It’s one thing to produce a board, it’s an entirely different proposition building a handheld that isn’t janky. The biggest difficulty I think they’ll face is battery life. It’s a chunky FPGA and they’ve also got the ARM CPU that needs juice as well. Secondly the controls. For whatever reason, making a very high quality Dpad has eluded even huge companies like Nintendo. The best ones they’ve done of late were the mini classic controls and the online ones.

It does seem cool but the Analogue Pocket at $250 just seems like a better buy. The Analogue Pocket does so much more than this. Now if this was like $100 or MAYBE $130. Cool devise!

The magnesium shell is actually concerning. Magnesium reacts to water. Water at room temperature it slowly react, but when heated up, the magnesium deteriorates rapidly. What I mean by this is, only thing protecting the metal from deteriorating in your hands is the paint on the shell. If the magnesium shell get exposed to your sweat and then heated up by your hands, the shell could deteriorate literally in your hands over time.

it's not 100% magnesium . It's a Magnesium-Aluminum alloy, so the properties and resistance to corrosion would change dramatically, I assume.

@@28_babyshark I don't know much about material science, but a quick search I found this. "Magnesium makes aluminum more anodic and dilute aluminum-magnesium alloys have a high resistance to corrosion, particularly in seawater and alkaline solutions. " .. but yes, a lot of unknowns about the specifics of the exact alloy used.
