If you're in Canada, local stores (Staples or Walmart) have a line of boxes called 'Bankers Box'. They come in the same sizes, with similar snapping mechanism but are almost half the cost of the Really Useful Box brand. Pro-tip: Use the containers upside-down, so that your minis sit on the lid. This makes it so that, when you remove the cover, your minis are on a very convenient army tray.

Great video and tutorial! I was actually tossing around the idea of doing one myself (I use the same exact boxes). For anyone in the US looking to save a little bit of extra money while doing this, you can buy craft circle punches and bulk magnetic sheet and punch the circles yourself. Instead of ferrous sheet in the boxes, I buy pre-cut galvanized steel flashing from a hardware store (usually less than a dollar per sheet) and put them in the box with double sided tape. It's a great way to save money since we pay a little more money for the RUBs across the pond.

I use metal washers with magnetic sheets. I like the weight that the washers add to the minis. I had to use the 60 mil sheets to get really good connection. Here in the US we have JoAnn Fabrics which has storage containers very similar but much cheaper. No fancy colors but stackable and very secure. Weighted minis don't tip or scooch nearly as easily.

I bought those really big backpacks with removable metal shelves from a company in Poland but for home storage I use big plastic Feldherr boxes with foam trays. No solution is ideal, magnets are a pain even more so when I became alergic to super glue (very liquid that evaporates) and had to use two part epoxy to glue the magnets to plastic.
@jherazob3 жыл бұрын
Then the magnet sheets are perfect for you I'd say, no messing around with glues, just peel the paper and stick them on
@IDICBeer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah this system with no glue could be great for you Dave
@jtswargaming3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that mate; that glue allergy sucks for this hobby. If you still wanted to go the magnetize base route and make sure you have enough contact area, you can put a dollop of hot glue (from a glue gun) in the underside of your base, apply the magnet, and then squish it down on a level surface. I normally put down some parchment paper first so that any overspill won't stick to my countertop.
@gi1dor3 жыл бұрын
I use hot glue gun, easy to work with it, very good adhesive
@MadMax-el2el Жыл бұрын
I developed an allergy to superglue after 20 years of using it without an issue. Either that or they changed the formula. What I do is wear the same respirator I use for airbrushing or spray paint, it is just n95 filters on it so nothing overly special, just make sure you get a good seal on the mouth and nose, shaving maybe require. Anything they have at the hardware store for painting/vapors should be good, the double filter units are the better option if available. Now vapors and eye irritation, open a window and set the fan in the middle of the room or 3 feet/1m from the window, leave the door to the rest of the house open and set the fan so it is blowing out the window. I have not had an issue in 5 years now. Also it helps air out through house. Finally put the models in another location to cure. I just put mine in the garage, then ignore for 48 hours. Honestly it is fine after 12, but why risk a "bad" connection fail if you don't have too.
@warhammerdad59613 жыл бұрын
Have dozens of boxes now magnetised the Duncan way and this looks like a really cool product. But over £10 for a single sheet to magnetise a single box is just crazy! Also need to mention if the magnetic sheets don’t go on the bases perfectly in line with the rim or if you have custom resin bases that are even half a mm too small you end up with a gluey lip that catches dust and dirt. Need to really be mindful when applying magnetic strips to models and don’t rush it.

I know the guy quite well. The reason the sheets are more expensive is due to there being way more processes involved in making it. I don’t see why people don’t realise that tbh. You can just buy A4 sheets instead if you don’t want the design. Or the plain version. It’s cheaper to buy more of them instead of just one, and there is also free postage. The designed sheets are cut out one by one, and have rounded corners. There are so many processes. 6 at least. And you could argue there were more when it comes to designing them, and finding something suitable people will like. A4 sheets have square corners and many sheets can be cut at once, hence the far cheaper price. I’ve also heard they’re working on a way to make the magnets so they can be stuck inside the bases as an alternative to sticking on the rim. Also they have improved those sizes that don’t fit well. They are all now perfect - if u ever receive ones too big now it will be a mistake and you must let them know. It’s not ideal sticking the magnets to the rim tbh, but GW don’t exactly make it easy to get round. A lot of people do really like them and many say they just glue them if they find they have trouble. There just isn’t enough surface area for the magnet to stick to the rims and the surface on the inside of the rims won’t allow you to stick any magnets in there without an even higher risk of them falling off. I’ll tell them u said it looks cool tho btw coz they will appreciate it! I think they are really hoping to improve the whole thing soon and make it a lot better with newer options etc

Wonderful Review. Been keeping up to date with this series of videos youve been making and its been such a godsend for alternative solutions. Got back into the hobby a few months back but back in my "hayday" was only foam cases which were alright up to a point (though was a nightmare for anything with spikey bits like my old chaos army). There is definitely one flaw with this current system in the eyes of competitive play as I believe it has been mentioned as you cant adjust the height of the bases. Could always shave down the bases by 1.5mm but that would be quite an extra effort. However I did notice that the magnetshop guys are selling 25mm versions (Ive just ordered a few in addition to their new sheets). Going to try and see if I can make them flush with some greenstuff or potentially 1p coins in the hollow areas. Really love what both you and the magnetshop are doing though so thankyou both very much :)

So I have some thoughts, and I do hope you will see this, and possibly give a reply. With the round magnetics, is there room between that and the actual base to put in some weight? Like a small. Metal washer or flat ring of some kind. I find that having your mini's weighted gives a much better feel on the tabletop when moving them around. Second, something I could possibly in the future try to play with. Is having my playmat/table with these bigger sheets, so the entire battlemap is magnetised, cut some sheets to fit the bottom of terrain and buildings, thereby ensuring that everything on the battlemap will not move unintentionally, which is something I am a very high fan off

You know I've been looking around for boxes just like that to put my models in. Straight flat walls and bottom. Could never find anything like them. I did find something close to them about a year or so ago and I updated my old storage system of the classic blastic boxes with the slightly slant angled walls to my current ones. Now that I got that done but finally someone actually tells what the name of these boxes are I feel like getting these now. Which is a hard decision seeing I play Orkz and currently got like 15k points of Orkz.....
@IDICBeer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is a lot of Orks to store
@JoeXTheXJuggalo13 жыл бұрын
@@IDICBeer yeah it is a lot of Orkz. The 2 main boxes I have use looks similar in size to the 4L and 9L boxes you have. Of course I live in the states so this product might be different. They're the Sterilite's plastic modular latch box. I like them because they stack snug and firmly together without any play. I'll convert the sizes of my boxes so you can roughly get the what I'm talking about. I got (7) 5.9L containers (looks like your 4L boxes), (2) 2.6L containers, (2) 12L containers (looks like your 9L boxes), (1) 61.9x38.4x15.6cm (24L) container, (1) 61.9x31.4x29.8cm (48L) container. I also got a stubby Citadel vehicle carrier and a Citadel 6 tray troop carrier. All full of my ork army. That's not including my pile of shame of unfinished minis and the several nut an bolt organizer boxes full of bits. Than tucked to the side surrounded by all the green skins is a container maybe around 30L and a 6 tray Citadel army carrier with my Necron army. I actually had to get a big garage storage shelf just to put all of these boxes and container on.

Very nice review Nick! It's a very convenient solution but I see a major problem in it (at least for me). The tournaments I use to go don't allow any base modification that alters any of it's dimensions, and that 1.5mm extra high it's going to be a problem for sure. Isn't it possible for Magnet shop to just make ones that fit in the gap of each base? I think that way would be the perfect storage solution!
@IDICBeer3 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy, not heard of that extreme restriction, but fair play. The ussue of making them to fit inside the base is the variety of base types, some are hollow, but many have the pins for the minis and of course the resin ones aren't hollow at all
@seandixon9603 жыл бұрын
You can use small 3x2mm magnets instead hidden inside the base as Nick showed with some of his metal minis instead. That would still function for storage and not add any height

And don't stumble. I used a high iron steel sheet on an old bed tray with RE mini magnets, held like a champ. A stumble and lurch saw minis bang into each other. Oh, Necrons too. I keep superglue on hand, so a few quick fixes and ready to play. Transport them that way other than walking around a tournament? Sorry, nope. Oh, the magnets are strong enough that the minis can stick together if the polarity and position are right.

@@IDICBeer Might have been more extreme since I was avoiding falling on my tray. The magnets did hold and since you do Necrons, the breakage was spindly bits, arms and guns. Here in the USA, I worry more about traffic issues, hard stops and swerves, let alone actually flying with them. Haven't done that in years since my son got older. I swapped to pistol hard cases for general transport, but had thought of doing more magnetic with foam board inserts notched to cross each other.

Initially I thought this was a great idea. However, a quick look at the pricing and I see it is stupidly over-priced. The slightly bigger sheet (with some unwanted stickers) is about the same price as TEN A4 sheets. The box deals then cost the box at £10 for a 4l box and £14 for a 9l box. I managed to buy three 9l boxes for just £15 at the weekend. So for a single box for a small army the ready made combination is £22 for a smallish force, with no larger models; or £26 if you want to combine small and large models in the same box. Shopping elsewhere I can do 3 home made boxes for ~£27 and still have loads of sheets left over for my other armies. True I'll have to stick the sheets down and won't have some stickers and a pen for the outside, but really .....

Perfection doesn't come cheap ha ha
@markhickson10663 жыл бұрын
@@IDICBeer as many say, perfection doesn't exist. At this price the solution is far from perfect. A 20% increase in costs and an extra £1 or so on boxes would have been reasonable. At over 800% the cost on the sheets and nearly 200% rise in the cost of a box this is just a rip off. While many are approaching this from a best solutions for painted minis, most are also looking at it as a cost effective solution. For me the cost was ~£27 for three 9l boxes, the current prices would put that at £78 from The Magnet Shop. Can't see many people going with it at the prices. Shame really as it could have been worth a little extra.
@IDICBeer3 жыл бұрын
@@markhickson1066 The extra cost is because of the tooling need for the size, the standard A4 sheets are just cut with a guillotine
@markhickson10663 жыл бұрын
@@IDICBeer I can see that being the case. Sadly for me the resultant cost is too high. I wonder if they have over engineered it. Just guillotining slightly longer would have been great, high cost to get an exact fit - not worth it. I wish them well but looking at other comments, others feel the same.

@@SIOSpawnhow you gonna help set them up stateside tho? When the USA have what is called a dumping tax. The USA are the thing that’s making it impossible for them to import it. (I’m friends with the guy) - they’re not trying to rip anyone off they just can’t get round it, they’re also a very small team. Shipping to America is well expensive for heavy/bulky items. And they don’t have the buying power massive companies have. Also the shipping on eBay isn’t able to be changed easily as it’s a variation listing. There’s so much more to tho than people realise 🤷♂️ America is hopefully on the horizon but if magnet was bought from America the price would have to be SO SO much higher than it is in the uk and then people would complain about that. It’s so difficult for them man. They’re really trying 😂 people just expect them to have it everywhere overnight when it’s only about two years old. It’s such a huge amount of work. It’s so disheartening for them to see people so quick to judge. It’s a UK company and there is only one guy running business development on it. No one else. Just one guy.

Honestly this has made me so excited and so angry in such a short space of time. I have loads of these and have struggled to sort out the extra bit on top of an A4 magnetic sheet (ones that I bought from the magnetic shop) saw this video and skipped off to buy me a pack. Imagine my shock when they are £10.95 each sheet. Now that could be the colouring but if you just want plain black it’s the same price. Honestly I feel taken advantage of! I feel like someone has told the the magnetic shop that wargamers have money and they’ve decided to mark their product up (by my calculations) around 430% compared to the price of their A4 10 pack 0.85mm thick sheets. Honestly I’ll avoid the magnetic shop products because of this it’s made me angry enough to do the math!!
@IDICBeer3 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy, the reason for the extra cost is how the new sheets are cut, they have to tool them as opposed to using a guillotine, they do get cheaper per sheet as you order more and I do appreciate they aren't exactly cheap, but they certainly aren't trying to take advantage.
