Replying to pinned comment as wanted to expand on the make-your-own section, and thought this may be genuinely be helpful to people looking into large-scale storage solutions. I store and transport all my minis in Really Useful Boxes - built using the DRPA Tutorial found on YT. By FAR the cheapest way to store large quantities of minis - you can often find bulk deals online for magnetic sheets, magnets, and boxes themselves too. I'm based in the UK, and use 4L and 9L Really Useful Boxes (both always bought through ASDA/George as reliably the cheapest supplier, or Ryman are also usually good too), A4 magnetic sheets (you don't need the self-adhesive ones, just super glue them down) bought in packs of 25 from the Magnet Shop, and 5x2mm neodymium magnets bought from Amazon in packs of 500. 1 magnet used for 25-40mm bases, 2-3 magnets for bigger bases or metal minis, super glued to the underside of the bases. For tanks you can drill a little into the tracks and magnetise there, or other solutions are out there too. For other minis without bases there are usually some contact points that can make this work along the same lines. Overall it works out to about £10-12 a box INCLUDING magnets, they are nicely stackable, easily interchangeable as to which minis you have inside, and for transport easily fit in the heavy-duty supermarket bags-for-life here in the UK (4 x 4L, or 2 x 4L and 1 x 9L, or 2 x 9L in a single bag). I've amassed a large collection over 16+ years of collecting and needed to upgrade my storage a couple of years ago from cardboard GW large battleforce/discount/starter boxes, and for a large quantity this was easily the most cost-effective way to do so.

Something worth noting about the magnet solution is that even if the magnets are holding strong and your minis don’t move when you shake or flip the box upside down, If you were to accidentally drop the case on a hard surface especially if it falls at an angle, the shock from the impact can send all the minis flying inside the case. I exclusively transport my armies this way so this isn’t a criticism, just something worth keeping in mind.

@@R-YR29That is certainly the goal, but accidents happen. You may not even drop it but trip or slip while carrying it. It’s just something to be aware of. Magnet cases are far more convenient, which is why I use them, but foam cases do provide more drop protection.

Another important difference between the two is if you have to fly. Sometimes you cant control checking a bag if the overheads fill and checking foam is a lot safer than magnetic.

I have just gotten into the game and my army quickly expanded to over 2k points and as a Chaos Space Marines player I found all my spikey bits getting damaged in my cardboard transport box. I also hadn't found any terrain yet but was enjoying playing with cardboard versions of those. I was so happy for you to release a videos that solved both of those problems because I just bought the Tabletop Stronghold 2.0 Case w/ 6 trays and the Terrain Kit. I was so stoked to see that they built the terrain kit specifically for Pariah Nexus and even include pictures of how to make the 8 Standard Terrain layouts on their website. Definitely glad you did this one. I have a not-small collection, and transporting that collection for apocalypse game always involves spending half an hour repairing them... so finding a safer mass transport option that doesn't cost as much as the army itself is definitely a priority for me.

I'm a recovering foam user- I have some 30 KR cases. It's a good solution, but the foam itself can stick to minis and I found packing to be a bit too slow. My solution was my own version of magnetic storage. I lined some KR boxes with thin card with magnets stuck to it underneath, as close together as I could get away with. Then the miniatures themselves have either steel washers or 3M steel discs glued under their bases, which means they stick firmly into the case, but _not to each other._ For vehicles, I cut a piece of foam board to the footprint of the vehicle, then hollow out recesses for the steel discs before putting a sheet of paper over the top and painting the whole thing with Stirland Mud to seal and protect the foamboard. As well as the models not potentially sticking to each other, this method scales well because the washers are considerably cheaper than magnets. They also weigh more, which helps stabilise the models on the table if they're a bit wobbly (hello, Seraphim). I would caution, though, that if you need to fly with an army you _really_ want custom-cut foam. Despite their disadvantages, foam cases protect models from sudden impacts far better than any other solution. A good hack with the trays with rectangular compartments is to expand them for larger models by only cutting the divider at the top or the bottom, so it can be pushed out of the way whilst remaining attached. This lets you use it as two individual compartments if you still need too, and the extra bit of foam can help secure the mini in the resulting double-sized compartment.

I do have a Tabletop Stronghold case. It is pretty nice. Good for display and probably local travel. Getting the acrylic front on is a little awkward but doable. Shipping was good and very well packed.

If you're just going somewhere like once or twice, two-sided foam tape is actually incredible. One roll costs next to nothing, and in my experience, it holds with incredible strength once or twice. So it's good enough for just a trip to a tournament. For example, a resin model on a 130mm base is going nowhere if the entire bottom is covered with two-sided foam tape and really pushed onto almost any surface that isn't nonstick. I use it exactly like I do magnetic sheets. Plastic box, cover the top and the sides with foam, cover the bottom with two-sided tape, and done. Non-metallic solution for airplanes that you can just put into your hand luggage, and then I just pack a couple more rolls of the same tape and repeat on the way back. Nothing picks up on the scanner or metal detector.

Pro-tip for bubblewrap in the UK; try B&M or Home Bargains for cheap rolls, or Hobbycraft, and Storage company's sell cardboard boxes and bubblewrap very handily and they're pretty common about the place, too.

I’m still a fan of foam. The trick is you have to have the compartment size just right. You want the models to have enough space around them they aren’t under pressure but can’t bounce around. I play Tyranids, and I have only lost models to foam damage when they were too tightly held. Some models need a custom cut, but most oddly shaped models can be laid on their back or side in a large rectangular or triangular space with an extra foam pillow or column in the right place to keep it from bouncing around. To keep cost down, I also have a large box in my garage for scrap foam. Any piece larger than my hand goes in my scrap box, and I have built many a tray for free from scrounged foam.

I use takeout meal boxes, with the models separated and padded with kitchen towels. It's a cheap stopgap that does the job for up to 10-12 Marines without too much trouble.

Also to keep in mind with magnet storage, if they are tall and spindly they can still just break at the long thin points. I wouldn't have that bloodthirster with just magnets with that single thin attachment point, vibration can just break it anyway and you can come back to a secure base but destroyed top

Just a tip as to what i found is the best way to apply megnets to your bases after trying out different things. Not a single one has come off so far. Before assambling the mini: Chose a one or multiple locations under the base, not directly on the edge Use sanding sticks to rough up the surface Then using a crafting knife start to scratch multiple horizontal and vertical lines in the area you want to place the magnet, increases grip Then put a bit of glue there Green stuff ball on top of the glue Another drop of glue ontop of the green stuff area Place magnet not thicker than 2mm on top of it Flip the base the right was up quickly and press on top of the base so it bends a little to insure the magnet sits flush. Bonus tip: Make sure you use the right size/amount of magets for the base. Otherwise the magnets are either not strong enough or too strong and start pull other minis on the table. Also make sure all your magnets are facing the same direction under the base. Decreases the chance of pulling other minis further.

Since like 95% of my army isn't painted, this is fine, though you are right about things occasionally getting jumbled around. I do intend to magnetize everything at some point and know several of the options I'm likely to go with, but that's a project for another year when I have more money and hopefully time.

I've learned to be more zen about the inevitable transport damage. I started with foam, and it would cause spindly and sticky-outy bits to snap off as I put them away or pulled them out. I then moved to magnets, and found that heavy resin models would inevitably shift backwards in a roller case and fall over or knock over lighter models, no matter how many magnets I attached. And if I went overboard on the base magnets, sometimes I'd end up pulling bits right off the model when lifting it from the plate. Nowadays I use a mix of both and try to put each model where it'll sustain the least damage, but weapons and spikey bits are always gonna break. I just keep some CA glue and accelerant on me and make my peace with the occasional surgery. My models might not stay at tip-top shape forever, but I'll always have my glamor shots of them just after finishing painting.

I use steel strike plates under my miniatures, then use a magnet on that to attach them to a ferrous sheet. It gives me a lot more flexibility in terms of the model, quite a bit more weight than just a magnet so it doesn't fall over when placed on an angle on the table. They aren't as smooth as magnets, and are much wider so they adhere significantly better with super glue than just magnets.

IMO the best option for magnets is getting ones that are exactly the depth of the base you're attaching them to. The only problem is that the specific sizes you need for some bases might not be common and thus expensive compared to more common sizes. GW bases will usually need 2.2mm or 2.6mm depending of the type of base for a perfect flush fit. Using greenstuff to pad 2mm magnets will work, but in my experience the flush fit is the best. The only other game I actively magentize bases for is Battletech, and that only needs 2mm magnets for the plastic models.

I use KR Multicase, and while $50+ for a box with foam trays you choose to fit specific models isn't necessarily cheap, the fact the only thing a standard box can't fit is something like a Thunderhawk does mean most armies have an option. I also use some of the compartments as bits and tool storage, which the magnetic boxes don't offer unless I magnetize the bits themselves a specific way. Add in carry options for the boxes themselves and transporting a whole army can be easy, if not hands-free while walking. That said, I would look into the magnetic ones shown should I get into Knights, as the best I can see on KR is one big knight alone, up to two medium knights, or up to two pairs of armigers, which it looks like the small magnetic box could hold all 7 I would need three boxes for...

I have the green stuff world mag cases. They are cheaper than the one featured here, and come in fabric carry cases. I use gorilla gel glue for magnets. Very strong and won’t melt the model.

While I don't air travel with minis, the best form of magnetisation i've found is with the "Warmag" sticky magnets. Buy the correct size base for the really useful box you want, buy the 25mm base pack (for any warhammer mini, use 3-4 on big bases). Seconds to apply with no fafing with glue, better connection and even including the box very reasonable for amount. I have armies on the bases on the shelf so can slide into / out of the box super quick. No seen what happens in a box drop though, probably not pretty. There's some 3D printed boxes that have clasps that go over the mini bases that seem a passable idea if you want "air" carry while better secured. Although they weren't cheap.

I've been having great success using epoxy glue to glue the magnets. Using the Duncan Rhodes method, you can also stick a metallic sheet to the wall of the bankers box to place bannermen and other slightly taller units sideways.

@SteveForteGMR I came up with the idea on my own many years before I ever saw anyone else do it. I doubt I'm the only one who saw a bankers box at Walmart and thought it could be used for storing minis. For clarity, and since it was referenced that way in the video, that's how I referred to it. I also prefer using duct metal sheets as they are less expensive and can be secured with some double-sided tape. If later you want to use the bankers box some other way, it's way easier to remove. You do have to purchase some metal cutters, though, but in the long run, they aren't that expensive.

I store most of mine in platic that 14" x 11" x3 1/4 " and I can get 3 in each cubical. That is mostly an at home setup that is cheap, and when I moved I just place foam, amzon bags and other filler. While I am army building for tournaments, I can move them to my more costly transport case. I do have 3d printed trays that hooks over the mini bases. My Xenomorphs are all one tray I can move around.

My only complaint is i wish the boxes were stackable. Not a huge fan of the handle I left mine off and I feel the box is a bit overpriced for what it really is. But overall its literally everything i ever wanted.

​@kevinallard8012 It depends. Does the box jiggle? No, but it's just MDF board held together by lots of tiny screws. If it gets any kind of liquid like rain or coffee on it, it's over, If you drop it, it's probably going to smash to pieces and I wouldn't put my own weight on it. But as just a little display and storage box for taking to and from your LGS it's fine. You could use wood glue and sealer to make it stronger and protect the MDF from expanding like a sponge when it gets wet. This whole MDF rant isn't exclusive to this box any MDF material is going to have the same issue. If you're really worried and want something more for travel there are other brands that are the same thing but come with a back pack that the box fits inside and others that are all metal.

I have gone though several options. I use the games Workshop foam cases for big units like land raiders and imperial Knights. GSC trucks and tall Tyranids with wings that balance bad, like hive tyrant. For everything else I use magnets from green stuff world. I have one official GSW case. But it was cheaper just to make crates for myself. I have a little trolley I strap everything into and wheel around.

I still have an old GW plastic case if I'm using a lot of infantry what works well and have a large box with lots of bubble wrap in for the larger minis, sometimes all minis go in the box if I'm lazy. If I go to a tourney I take a large plastic tray to out my army on while at the venue to keep things simple.

what I found is the best option to mount magnets under bases is UV-Resin. Just put a blob of that under the base, push a magnet in an blast with a UV torch. cured in seconds and sturdy enough. with greenstuf or superglue, the magnets tend to fall out or stay behind on the magnetic tray.

Now I use magnets, but back in the day when I was new what I did was get some cardboard Egg cartons once you finish eating the eggs out of them and then just stick a squad of guys into the egg carton with each guy (My case THousand Sons Rubric Marines) in each egg holder.Then I would stack the egg cartons into a box and would transport them that way. All you have to do is be willing to eat a dozen eggs per 12 models you have, Or Alternately find someone else who does eat a lot of eggs and ask them to save their egg cartons for you. Currently now that I don't use them for models, I still save my egg cartons because I use them to store Paint pots. No colour sheme I have currently uses more than 12 paints so I can have 1 carton of paints per army and when I want to paint an army I grab the carton and open it up and get my paints out. Plus I can have a carton of shared paints that multiple armies make use of (For example a shared Brown for Leather pouches etrc) and then you just grab the shared carton and the army specific one and go to town.

Think about your back before carrying boxes around. I use a small trolley I can pull around or strap on my back if needed. I made a kind of foam box with two drawers. Then open the trolley, remove the foam box lid and pull out one of two armies. Enough space left for all the stuff you might need for even a long tournament.

I have the citadel crusade case, a feldherr case, loads of really useful magnetised boxes, and a tabletop tyrant case. The tabletop tyrant holds hundreds of soldiers , the really useful boxes are fantastic for soldiers and anything with a base. Feldherr is fantastic, if expensive, for large vehicles and dreadnought, and having attacked my crusade case with a hot glue gun, I have made it perfect for tanks

Metal cantilever tool box + magnets = win. The tool box can be picked up nice and cheap so you could probably buy one of those and the magnets you need for less than the price of a dedicated miniatures case alone, they're tougher, provide easy access to your minis without having to pull trays out, just open to box and off you go and when it comes to durability over time, the tool box is unbeatable, it'll probably last your whole life, no worries!

I use 2 6-gallon milk crates. One for snacks and drinks. The other for my bags of Boyz and other models. I've found that zip-lock type bags work very well for infantry and other small models. Edit: I use the box from the Stompa Boyz as bottom pieces for the milk crates so nothing falls out.

There’s also the other option. Just build your own. It’s not hard (or expensive) to build a box out of decent cabinetry plywood and then make some steel shelves. Had a place that made four custom cuts of 16 gauge steel for $20 total. Throw on a coat of paint and a kayak handle and you can build a case large enough to carry a 3K army with room to spare for about $60-$70.

I’m doing my Imperialis scale solar auxilia as a Krieg scheme and bought 3 Zeppelins in 1/350 scale to be their storage. Still figuring out magnetizing as I build the tanks but I’m magnetizing the bodies of the Zeppelins so they break open. I bought some Arvus drop ships to kitbash them into a gondola and the engines sticking out LOL

8:44 I’ve used 3mm tall magnets for years on GW bases except the new 28.5mm bases, they’re slightly too shallow. I use 2mm or stack 1mm magnets in there, useful to know if you’re doing a sisters army.

If you like in the UK pop down to the biscuit section of the local M&S. Here you will find a bunch of biscuit tins in various sizes which are magnetic. For £15 you can get s big tin that is large enought to hold 70 or 80 tal magnatised l models (Belgium biscuits, large tin). For less money you can get a shortbread tin (80 small models) or a small Belgium biscuit tin - 30 or so medium models. If you work in a large office you can probably also pick some up from the biscuit Brigade around Christmas. The only downside is you may be tempted to eat the biscuits.

For me atm a foam case works since I currently have 3 killteams and one custodies combat patrol but when I get into armies then I’ll think of getting a magnet case since I want to have an guard army with a lot of vehicles

My solution was to get baking trays with a plastic cover and handle from WalMart. Magnetized the bottoms and they stay perfectly. Then, I got a rolling suitcase and stack them in the suitcase. The lids keep them safe and the handle makes for easy moving between tables, the rolling wheels make transporting my full armies/collection without straining easy. On. Each tray is ten dollars and the suitcase was forty dollars. For less than a hundred dollars I can carry my entire marines and custodes army.

If you want a cheap alternative way to transport models, try a metal toolbox. Not as flexible as the ones suggested but it is serving me well.

Really cheap, readily available and sturdy as a Tank. Slightly heavier then other Options, but the Good ol' Toolbox is one of my Favourites, especially for my Guard Army

For infantry I magnetize the bases and stick them to the inside of a military surplus 30 cal ammo can

I got a bunch of armies, and an embarrassing number of models, I had to go with a custom option for at home storage, converted a few plastic totes to hold magnetized models, I keep whichever 40k and AoS army I'm currently playing out in a decorative cabinet, and a plastic magnetized thing I got off Amazon for taking a list wherever. I usually play a given army for a year or so, then I'll pack it up, grab whichever one I want next and off we go.

Good video overall. Traditional slotted foam works best for metal and metal-plastic hybrid minis. The GW channel foam is not ideal for metal minis. Feldherr has some interesting selections to store minis in the box they came in. In particular, the custom tray for Space Hulk works really well. Battlefoam has pluck foam trays sized to fit into GW's cases. This works well for vehicle and large model storage. I bought plastic totes for the extra channel foam these replaced. Perhaps with a future army project I will I will try the magnet option.

I have a couple of old portable warfare bags and a games plus bag. The are decent bags, however someone on Etsy sells a 3d .stl kit to print trays for bags which use 13 x 7. inch foam. The total cost is low and also can give new life to older bags like the ones from Sabol designs.

I switched from magnetic boxes, to regular plastic boxes filled with bubble wrap. It works pretty well. It's also cheaper and I don't waste time glueing magnets

Just got the large jucoci transport case with the light. Not going to lie it's actually better than i thought it was going to be. The price tag was a bit much for what it is was my only complaint. Funny because right after i buy it the case i wanted on dice baron goes back in stock literally a day after i buy it....... My luck im just used to it by now.

I love magnetizing miniatures. And storage is dirt cheap compared to buying a dedicated carrying case. I went to the dollar store and got a baking sheet pan for $1.25 then went to Walmart and got a storage container for $5 that fit the sheet pan perfectly. I could store 10 armies for the price of one actual caring case.

We did the magnet thing last week for a car trip with my 9 years olds ork army and my tau to warhammer world. 2 plastic boxes from lidl £5 for 2. Magnetic self adhesive sheets from Amazon £10 . 100 little magnets £6 and we ran out of time to green stuff them so he suggested blue tac, worked a treat tbh, we taped plastic small plant ot trays around the inside edge, 2500 points of orks same with Tau with little models going in fishing tackle boxes again from Lidl, stompa, gaz, farsight, riptide, all safely travelled from surrey to Nottingham with no casualties, until we got there when his orks stomped their way over my Tau 😂 the whole magnetic sheet thing is genius

Blu-tac served me well for many years as a solution before I discovered magnetisation. Would reccomend for when thriftiness is called for.

the height of the magnet on the base doesn't matter if you mount them on coins. A nickel is generally cheaper than the metal its made of and your magnets will always be flush because the rim of the base can overhang

For my Necron army, I used a "really useful box" lined with a magnetic sheet, and it was perfect and cheap. Now that I've switched to Kill Team, it's magnetic sheet + generic kids pencil box lol

Magnetic cases work so much better if you magnetize the tray, and add washers to the base
