We're making homemade jam, homemade peanut butter, and homemade bread to complete our totally from scratch peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This sandwich is easily one of the most iconic and simplest sandwiches in the world (well maybe just America) to make, I mean there are 3 ingredients! We're bringing in my mom to decide which is the best PB&J, the store-bought PB&J, or my homemade PB&J.

As a Brit, I always assumed that "Jelly" was what Americans called Jam. We also have Jelly, but you don't put it on sandwiches.
@AustynSN
@AustynSN 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if these definitions are the same in the UK, but here in the US, the differences are.... Jelly - Made from juice, all others are referred to by its name generically Jam - made from macerated fruit Preserves - Made from whole or large chunk fruit marmalade - Made with citrus skin Curd - made with fruit (usually citrus, but not always) and egg. Very rare in the US unless used as a pie filling. What is Jelly used for in the UK? How is it different from what we define as "jelly"?

I feel for Josh. My daughter is allergic to peanuts and I've spend a good amount of COVID learning how to make breads. Any sandwich bread I make, and my kids reaction is almost always the same. "I like wonder bread better." The one they like best is the Hokkaido milk bread/dinner rolls converted to a loaf. Try that one Josh.

Try butter on your jam side, then when you apply the cold jam it hardens the butter, preventing the bread from soaking it up and admit it. Everything is better with butter

Joss, PB&J is my breakfast for the last 6 years, literally. Is my best time of the day, I cant wait to start my day with a huge single slice topped with a ridiculusly thick layer of PB&J so I think I have some experience to share. The Peanut butter. All done absolutelly correct, just a tip, if you want your PB not to be absorbed by the bread then leave the PB aside for a couple of weeks (yes, plan ahead) so the natural oil will come on top and you can remove some. stir again and it will be thicker. Now if you toast the bread, the heat will make runny again so think of make the PB even thicker, so remove more oil. The Jelly. All done absolutely correct, but try to use RASBERRY instead, it has a natural citrusness which make it more balanced and more interesting. Again if you toast your bread then jam will become more runny so use the jam as first layer and PB as second. The Bread. All done absolutely WRONG. I think you are sourdough expert so I was wondering why the hell made a supermarket bread? anyway try to make a decent sourdough. the problem here is the holes. I suggest (if you use white flour) 10-15% wholemeal, so it will become more dense and fewer and small holes. Now the last 2 years Im fan of rye flour and man that is even better. 50-50 wholemeal white-wholemeal rye (same as starter) mixed with guiness beer plus 20ml of black trickle (optional). that compination of flour and guiness took my breakfast to whole new level. So all in all try with sourdough bread and raspberry jam

That's not experience genius, you're sharing your preference. Regardless of what you like, nothing is wrong with any jam, or any bread. Also, it isn't "supermarket" bread, it's sandwich bread. Supermarket bread is the zombie equivalent, with preservatives to make it last a lifetime.

@@MacheteSquad You could argue that with any food, that nothing is “wrong“, all preferences. But it's important to believe that there are ideal ways. I mean that's what Joshua's “But better“ series is based on. He takes a recipe, breaks it down and says “Okay you did this and that (Which is probably what Jamie Oliver preferred in his fried rice), but do it this way and it will be better“. I agree with Marios. The usage of soft bread was nostalgia first, taste second. Because it's “traditionally supppsed to be this way“. But if you toss aside tradition, with the intent to maximize flavor. You will find that sourdough bread is a better fit.

My family always makes our pbj's from scratch, the peanuts we buy already roasted to make things a little easier, but we use our own fruit that we grow and my mom makes a great sourdough bread... One thing that I love about our pbj's over store bought ingredients is we make our jelly a little less sweet, its kinda tart so it evens the sweetness of the peanut butter and bread

@Buzz Lippman Jelly is a clear fruit spread made from cooked fruit juice and sugar, and possibly pectin, which helps it gel and thicken. ... Jam is a thick spread made from fruit juice, chopped, crushed, or puréed fruit, and sugar. Pectin may also be added to help it gel, but jams are usually looser than jellies. I mean jelly is closer to Jello than jam is so the name makes sense
