It's honestly baffling to me why they didn't include the function to manually change lane settings in the base game. With a deeper focus on traffic compared to the first game this seems like an obvious thing, why do we need mods for that? Traffic management would've been so much easier with that function alone.
@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines

True, but I guess because there is probably a list with 10 million things on that would be great to have in a game, but you have to stop somewherre and then maybe add things like this at a later date :-)

If I had to guess it's coming in a DLC/Update sometime in the next few years. They took a lot of popular mods and made them into the base game for C:S1, I'm sure they'll do the same for C:S2.
@Pharenir
@Pharenir 8 ай бұрын
@Biffa that's certainly true. But especially for a second entry in a series I'd look into the most popular mods for the first game and (at least try) to implement that. And of this moment that's (according to steam) Move It, Precision Engineering (which they mostly implemented) and TM:PE. Even more so when you focus more on the simulation of things and 'better' traffic simulation. I can understand and fully support that they didn't include all the QOL mods for detailing etc. but I honestly expected better traffic control. @michelanvalo and with Paradox at the helm I'd guess we'd have to pay a pretty sum for that DLC...

Surely it’s a performance limitation? It would definitely increase the complexity of route planning, and probably doesn’t scale well especially on consoles. CS2 already has significant issues with the agent simulation at high populations
@Pharenir
@Pharenir 8 ай бұрын
@@danielwilson6323 very much doubt it would have much of an influence on performance. Especially since there is already a 'light' version of this in the game: banning left/straight/right traffic for an entire street. And to be perfectly honest, I'm tired of console limitations constricting the decisions for these kinds of games. It's a complex simulation, imho it doesn't belong on consoles which are inherently limited in controlling these kinds of games.

Biffa, for junctions like the last one, I've done it last year, and I've found out if you make it normal, as in a 4 way junction, add the traffic lights select the "protected left turn" or the "split phasing", after that upgrade one of the road into a highway going in and then draw a highway going out and then a highway going in, it will still remember the light the "advanced split phasing" or the "protected left turns" even if it wont show it in there as being an option or even a selected phase, it will function as intended. From my understanding, the traffic light will stay as it is unless you delete the junction and do 2 different roads in the same direction, I've a similar junction, but with 3 highways going in, 2 lanes each, 2 left,2 straight, 2 right. What you could do for a future testing episode is to test different types of junction like this and see which one would do the best for a traffic flow.

Hi, I'd just like to note for Mr. Biffa something important about the first intersection (which also applies in his city with the intersections he was having trouble with last episode). While unidirectional lane filling is the best technique for vanilla intersection flow and similar, e.g. under TMPE in CS1 or the regular Split Phasing with the TEM here in CS2; however, once you get to setups that make better use of lanes, like the advanced split phasing, the lane maths have to be applied slightly differently. Unidirectional lane filling is what Biffa does at 6:05 (6:35) and 31:14 (although here it is justified, because of the outgoing number of lanes in the intersection, which I will explain after), where all the incoming lanes are dedicated to one direction and attempt to fill all outgoing lanes. The significant difference is that with basic intersection flow, you imagine that all of the cars are going everywhere at once. A single use for each incoming lane and (ideally) a single entrance to each outgoing lane from the intersection means the cars don't have to merge and, in turn, optimises traffic flow. *On the other hand, with advanced intersection flow, it's important to consider each phase of traffic movement, rather than as if all the cars were going everywhere at once.* Once the lanes have been automatically set by the Lane Direction Tool within TEM, you can see at 4:30 that within a phase (the north phase there), all outgoing lanes of the crossed turn direction (west) are used, as the two crossed turning lanes and the single curb turn (left turn) lane from the opposite incoming direction (south) combine to fill all 3 lanes, and all outgoing lanes of the opposite direction (south) are used, as two are used by traffic from the north and one is used by left-turning traffic from the east. *This is the essence of advanced intersection flow, allowing for cars to split to the highest number of lanes to use the as much road as possible as effectively as possible.* You may be looking at the footage and notice that there are actually two left-turning lanes from the south direction, creating merging in the centre lane to the west outgoing; compare the lane markings to those at 6:40 when Biffa upgrades to 4 lanes. Now, the mathematics is perfect. Yes, it looks like there is overlap, but because traffic is phased properly, there is no forced merging, so it would run smoothly - the only overlaps within the same phase are where the 4 lanes goes down to three. This is due to the nature of asymmetrical roads. I could make a whole post just on how to properly apply them, but in essence it's adding a lane to an oncoming direction, meaning that lanes should also be added to the other outgoing directions of the intersection to accommodate the more spread-out cars; the asymmetric road should not be used just on its own. This will ensure that the phased lane mathematics works out properly (note: if multiple directions need asymmetric roads, extra lanes need not be added multiple times to the non-asymmetric directions, and the ultimate result should be that the roads that needed asymmetric actually get +1 lanes in both directions, so they don't actually end up asymmetric). Hope this makes sense and helps!
@willcaine1208
@willcaine1208 8 ай бұрын
@ Yeah, I can give you an example of using asymmetrical roads. Imagine you have a 4-way intersection with 1 lane each direction where themajority of traffic is coming from the south. For left-hand drive, it would look like this: ⬆⬇ ➡ ➡ ⬅ ⬅ ⬆⬇ Now, because the traffic is coming from the south, let's add another to take pressure off of the single incoming south lane going all directions. Depending on how traffic is going, this could be to create a dedicated left/right lane if most traffic is heading in that direction (and have a shared straight and right or straight and left lane), or, if most traffic is going north, to create two straight lanes that northbound traffic can split into, effectively doubling throughput. Remember that to create the asymmetric incoming from the south, the outgoing in the other directions also need to accommodate. For our situation, let's say you have observed the intersection and most traffic wants to head north: ⬆⬆⬇ ➡ ➡ ⬅ ⬅ ⬆⬆⬇ By uniformly increasing the size of the intersection, now there are enough lanes to accommodate the newly throughput cars that you've allowed in. To do it otherwise, you allow more cars in, but without giving them a way out, congestion will remain the same or could even get worse.

I think that @Biffa had a point there whit the "u-turn" situation, and also all people complaining about car shifting lanes or waiting hours just to get a parking spot on the other side of the road...well: this is how real traffic works! Think about this next time that you're driving and just "stop a minute" to do something or you waste hours driving oround to find parking or you shift lane at the last second because you're distracted or just coise you've saw the other lane is empty or quiker. (I'm a driver and I've to say that this kind of traffic AI is one of the most realistic in sims history)

It seems that the despawning is generally caused by gridlock when right-turning traffic blocks other traffic that blocks other traffic that blocks the right-turning traffic at the start of the sentence - which is pretty much inevitable if right-turning traffic doesn't get its own phase and there is no intergreen period. Adding a pedestrian phase would help to reduce this problem!

In the final design, two of the left turns are overlapping in opposite directions. Moving the lanes over slightly so they don't block each other would increase traffic flow.
@NotFlint

Maybe it is overkill and missing the point because it would be to massiv for it to be considered an inner city crossing, but I guess if you try and turn the opposite straight ons into tunnels and turn the other two into overpasses, it wouldn't despawn anything because it hasn't any crossing traffic. To take it even further you could do 2 lanes for these roads so the splitting lefts and merching lefts get a dedicated lane aswell. With that setup the traffic light only has to handle the right hand turns.

Also in this setup the closest vehicle spawner to the vehicle after it’s spawned is the adjacent sides, that’s why most of your cars turn right and left. You’ll find if you zoom out the ones that end up going straight, are ones that would be stuck in line too long if they turned to the closest spawner, so they choose to go straight

For example, if you forbid right and left turn, you can get 3 lanes directly going straight through the junction. If you forbid left turn and going straight, you can get three lanes turning right.

On some kind of intersections, these things are better resolved making the straight lanes down on a tunnel, or the turns to the right over a bridge. Traffic won't stop. One thing is having tiny space and you just have to stick on a cross (where you still can tunnel the straight lanes on the most busy direction), another is upgrading to a non-sense sum of lanes and abusrd traffic stops (USA is a big example of that)

Totally unrelated, but Biffa have you tried to use Extended_Road_Upgrades to control zoning? Absent a zoning tool, this seems to work much more reliably for me than placing paths. You can convert one side of a road to quay/retaining wall to prevent zoning. After you do the zoning you want and the buildings spawn in, if you remove the quay/wall then almost all of the time it stays as you want. Only occasionally do I have random zones break this way, where it was constant with the path method.

There was really no reason to go for the 3+3 split at the end. If you'd stuck to the 5-lane roads, you'd have had the left slip lane, two going straight and two going right. Note that when the slip lanes merged, you didn't have the fourth lane for it. With the 1+2+2 setup, this wouldn't be an issue. I'd love to see how this setup performs! Hey Biffa, your roadtific testing is interesting. I would like you to test whether overpass/underpass would work well in CS2. So, the straight on traffic should use the overpass/underpass while the turning traffic should use normal junction. Looking forward to seeing the result.

This is great video and excellent research. However I tried to replicate your final design with three 3-lanes roads and the game would not recognize it as single intersection so I can't add and control the lights as required. Maybe you have to create the intersection at first using some other way, I'm not sure.

What if you make those each 5 lanes? Then what if you have stacked roads. How much can you really increase this?

For vanilla, could you do underground or bridge right turn slip lanes, removes the overlap turning lights. Then you only have straight lane with lights no overlap turns. Maybe even only have to do right slip lane on opposite directions so there is no overlap. 🤔🤔🤔

At 42:00 biffa says you can’t control the lanes in vanilla… on the junction at that time, could you use the “no left turn”, “no right turn” and “no straight on” built in signs to do it?

I think to run the real test maybe building things like housing, industrial and comervial districts would make the test more accurate but more time consuming as well. Sorry to say but i feel the devs dropped the ball HARD with the traffic AI since they had years of knowing TMPE was so essential in the game that npt adding some functionality like that from the start was a pretty big oversight. I had no issue with the optimization so many got upset about. Its underdtandable that they could not optimize for EVERY comfiuration or PC spec but knowing TMPE was so essential in CS1 they should have made it from the start. Just my opinion i know there are some people who feel that any suggestion the game is not perfect is a mortal sin, i would say ita very stable, it makes total sense thry could not plan for every pc spec and hardware but the traffic AI and no basic traffic conteol functionality from the start was a missed oppertunity.

It still baffles me that TMPE and node controller isn't part of the vanilla game. CS:1 becomes a nightmare of traffic micromanagement beyond a certain population if not for TMPE and node controller. At the very least, lane management should've been a base feature in CS:2.

I wonder if you can space each of the lanes out in such a way that you can have dedicated right-hand overpasses for each direction of traffic. There was that mod in CS1 that did small intersection overpasses, but it was hella awkward

I want to see you test if using the traffic light mod's lane direction tool on an intersection before changing it to a roundabout allows the direction selection to carry over to the roundabout, and if so, does it allow the roundabout to run more efficiently

Might be interesting to design a city for this sort of testing. 4 quarters of the city, 2 residential opposite each other with a industrial off one direction and a commercial out the other. Could use sports stadiums or colleges to help direct the heaviest flow to turn one direction or the other? Just vomiting out a possible thought was all.

Maybe, I have seen cars get off a highway to get back on and doing a U turn to make it possible; some of the path finding in the game can get pretty wonky.

Are you able to properly utilise a Park and Ride system? Free car parks and free buses from the outskirts of towns/cities to relieve traffic? I don't have the game myself but maybe the cim logic would choose this option rather than having to build mega crossroad junctions 😆

@Biffaplaycitiesskylines really Miss timed traffic lights. LOL. Love your videos. How do i get the traffic light enhancement. ? Also question not this video related. I'm having Air pollution issue going on. I had a massive build up off it where i get half the map complaining. Now i wiped out everything that was red from air pollution and let it run . But the pollution doesn't go away. I've let it run for a few hours and regardless it won't go away and its a serious problem. I heard there is a bug with Air pollution. I heard its certain maps. Which i'm using Barrier island map.
