Don, you will probably never hear Julianne Petersen belt out a song. Her voice isn't built for that. It works really well for songs that are soft, delicate and very light or gospel songs that are haunting such as "Wayfaring Stranger." When the Petersen's need a belt voice they rely on Ellen (the blond) to do it. When they need the poetry to come out in the music, the choice is usually big sister Katie. When they want a strong gentle country voice, they use Matt. If they need a conventional bluegrass tenor voice, they can go to Emmett. You are right about growing up as the youngest in a family band. Based on a magazine article that Julianne wrote on the subject, it sounds as if Julianne lost confidence in her singing trying to sing bluegrass songs. She regained her confidence when the group toured Ireland, and Irish audiences were requesting her to sing more because she had a beautiful Irish lilt to her voice.

You are right Don, Juliane is tjhe youngest of the 3 sisters. I love how well they harmonize.,, It doesn't matter which of the girls take lead, they kill it. Matt and Emmett have fantastic voices too. I love their covers but I wish you'd do more of their original material. Especially "California" written by Katie

Thanks for another Petersens reaction Don. I've been listening to them since I discovered them Christmas 2021. Love them. A couple of other covers by them you might check out (these are 2 of my very favorites by them) are "You're Still The One" and "Carolina in My Mind". They do excellent jobs on these two songs imo. And yes, that's the youngest, Julianne. She naturally has a much softer voice. (She's been off to I believe her first year in college this last year so she hasn't performed with the group in several of their latest uploads I've watched.) The two older girls, Katie & Ellen are for the most part predominately the main two singing voices of the group. Ellen I would say is the strongest and Katie has a really emotional delivery in her style. I really like hearing and watching many of their videos.

Julianne is the youngest, and usually is reserved in the unique way she sings. They all sound different from each other, but each has a great voice. Next time, listen to the eldest, Katie, sing 'Desperado' (and watch the outro at the end). Katie does a GREAT job on her rendition...

I love this version! Didn't want any Belting Out, I love their harmonies and their intentional presentation. This is a song that can be sipped to full effect, or gulped --- there's no right or wrong here. Fabulous choice, thanks Don for the "request" and for your terrific reaction!

Go back and find their cover of Fields of Gold which Julianne is the lead singer. Also, try their cover of Gentle on my mind. When that girl realizes the voice she has, look out!

Love that version of that song when you talk about lyrics I tend to remember song lyrics as well of quite a few songs pop and country . At times one lyric from a song from the past will get caught up in my brain and I will have to search Google and figure out where it came from and sometimes it makes it comical because it will be the weirdest lyric . Like one time a few years back I all of sudden had the lyrics "another man done gone " I am like my gosh where did that come from it turned out to be Bobby Bares song Marie Laveau . Everyone thought I was nuts but I had proof after looking up the song I had to go see there it is .

Hey Don, I’m a big Petersens fan and I think you’re spot-on in your analysis. Julianne(mandolin) narrates the family travel vlog channel where she is very witty and entertaining but when the family does an update chat video she tends to cede to her older siblings and doesn’t participate as much. Ellen(banjo) is the sister that can really belt out the tunes, maybe she would've been more suited to this song. Julianne(mandolin) I think is at her best when she is singing lower with emotion, there’s a video of her singing ‘Wade in the Water’ which I think really showcases her talent. The third sister Katie(fiddle) is great with the harmonies, I think the Petersens are at their best when Ellen(banjo) or Julianne(mandolin) is taking the lead and Katie is doing the harmonies

Don - This is the 2nd of most recent reviews that I have seen you offer on the Petersens. I don't understand why haven't learned more about the Petersens given you are 'Reviewing' them. DO YOUR HOMEWORK !!! All you have to do is go to KZbin and review their content. They have a number of their shows at Branson recorded where Matt talks about the family between songs and the Petersens have done a number of live chats. That is called Research !!! I like your positivety but disappointed with your 'lack of knowledge' on the reviews of the Petersens !!! Definitely room for improvement !!!

They do concerts 4 times a week, they are full time singers/ players. Amazing talent. They are very successful!
