Billy Zane was awesome in this role. Swanson and Zeta Jones were hot. Treat Williams was over the top and campy. But I loved that this was a period piece. Solid film.

Billy Zane is such an underrated actor! I loved him as Drake in Charmed, and in Tales from the crypt Demon knight! (I know he’s done so many different films and shows those are just my absolute favorites.)

When I was 9yrs. old. in 1958, I remember reading the comic strips of the L. A. Times and one of my favorite characters was The Phantom! One of my older brothers subscribed to the newspaper and everyday I had the opportunity to read the comic strips. To me , The Phantom was very exciting and I eagerly awaited for each day to arrive so I may have the pleasure of reading my favorite hero. When I saw the movie, it brought back wonderful memories of my childhood. Despite what anyone says, I will always like, The Ghost Who Walks!

Yeah its funny this along with Dick Tracy, Rocketeer & The Shadow where all flops in there day but nowadays are held up as cult classics & viewed by many as some of the best movies of the 90's amazing how things change.

@@JayDee284 I think it’s because they were seen as stylistically outdated on release in comparison to films like The Rock and Con Air etc, but they’ve stood the test of time because they’re classically made films with traditional film making techniques that we now miss. We’ll never get an on location shot superhero film ever again and as film buffs we know films like this are special.

@d R I agree, I love my Bruckheimer era films but those were the style of films that were pulling crowds at the time. I think The Mummy in 99 and Zorro in late 98 probably paved the way for the films of the 2000s which were more like The Phantom. Imagine if The Phantom came out during the pirates of the Caribbean era.

I really enjoyed this movie. I found it to be campy fun. I love the line "no smoking in the skull cave". Don't expect some dark, serious movie - enjoy it for what it is.

As Indian i remember watching the movie trailer on national TV called Doordarshan and i found it really cool. It was the early 90s when Hollywood was making entry into Indian market. The first blockbuster to catch the nation's attention would definitely be Jurassic Park. I watch Defenders of The Earth and Phantom 2040. Learned today that Billy Zane, the Titanic villain is the movie Phantom. Phantom remains a cool character and needs a reboot.

In my opinion Harper is the best reviewer on the internet. I love the movies he picks and I love the way he goes into detail about the production of the films, something that I haven't seen any other reviewer do. I feel like his only weak point is that he spends too much time narrating the plot's of the movies. Just a little constructive criticism Mr. Harper from a fan.

Him because of the detail he goes into with production and Decker Shadow because he’s fair about the flaws of the films he’s watching and he’s so funny. So it’s really dependent upon what you are in the mood for a professional look into all the details of a movie or a look at the good and bad parts of a movie that will make you laugh.

When I saw this movie when it came out, I was familiar with the character thanks to the serial newspaper comic strip in The Washington Post. I think the setting of the 1930's gave it the Golden Age of Comic books vibe. It was a great popcorn flick.

I still think this was one of the better 90s superhero movies... From what I recall, there was a bit of a backlash about his costume... purple in the jungle indeed. Very dark purple & black tactical gear would have been a bit different and updated from the old comics. Though not sure if he'd survive the humidity hehe.

They didn't really have the concept of camouflage in the Western World at the time, so it would've looked very out of place.

There are some interviews with Lee Falk in a couple of the books collecting the old comic strips where he says he actually wanted the costume to be either grey or dark green. He actually liked the idea of using some form of camouflage (despite what the other commenter says about people in the past not having a concept of camouflage, people in the past were in fact, not stupid) some of the first comic strips even describe the costume as being grey. However, when it was printed in color for Sunday comics, the publisher decided to color it purple.

Excellent review! I remember seeing The Phantom movie in wide release and enjoying it. Over the years I've watched it a few more times on DVD and I still like it. As a matter of fact, I own a copy. I was disappointed when it failed at the box office because I wanted it to become a franchise. I hope they do a remake that catches on one day.

I saw this in the theater with my wife. We both enjoyed it then and we have both the DVD and Blu versions. It is a fun little movie and Billy Zane was perfect along with Kirsty Swanson. If I could change anything it would be Treat Williams as Drax. But still very good and watchable. I own this movie, the Shadow, the Rocketeer, and Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze. Each one slightly different but all watchable. I miss pulp stories.

My kids and I really love this movie as well as The Shadow and John Carter. I think the main problem was that these characters came from a time too long before the current generation and were largely unknown to them. Also the advertising wasn't good. Thx for these reviews. I enjoy them!

I found Billy Zane's preformance of the Phantom character had little of Adam West's 60's Batman in style and tone in certain scenes but not over all)..the shower scene with the women could have been right out the 60's Batman tv show in style and tone

I'm a huge phantom fan i.e. "phanatic" They got almost everything right in the film just like in the comics . I loved this film although it has some flaws. I hope we get another Phantom movie . Great review.

"the idea of a man dressed in purple running around in the jungle" 😂 I really loved this movie. It didn't take itself too seriously (the Phantom certainly didn't take himself seriously), the Phantom's fight scenes seemed straight out of the comic book pages, and there is that whole adventure feel to it, taking you into that time and era. Absolute nostalgia. Absolutely loved it!

If Paramount or Lionsgate (which bought some of the rights to "The Phantom" I believe) is intelligent. They'll make a sequel starring Billy Zane and introduce Mandrake, Flash Gordon and Tarzan, who all were owned by King Features Syndicate. Then they can make a Defenders of the Earth type movie or like the new "King's Watch" comics. Though they need to make these movies more gritty and real and remove the camp quality of the first film (I love it though!) as that wouldn't work anymore at all. Also, to ensure the sucess of the character, they'd need to release the movies first on the territories where the comic book characters are popular, like in Australia, New Zealand, India and the UK. Release it later in the U.S. It's not the be all and end all of a film's box office anymore!

When I was a kid, Phantom was my favorite hero.We had indrajal comics here in india which used to print comics way back in the 70s and the 80s.But slowly they disappeared from the main stream comics.Today children in india dont know anything aboit phantom.Really sad.

This movie is a real treat for superhero junkies. Phantom was one of the first comics I came across as a (big) kid. Interestingly you didn't mentioned the late father's (ghost?) appearance, for me it give the movie character a sense of insanity, which I didn't like. I don't recall anything like this from the comics, tho I had only around 8 of them, so I'm absolutely fall in the category of "I know some basic stuff of the character, I like it, but I don't know everything."

I like this movies about pulp heroes, one movie that I recommend is the 1998 movie The Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas, for me is a good movie then again I don´t know your opinions. And by the away great review.

The thing that really makes the Phantom hold up is the stunts; in world where every hero becomes a CGI rubber ball, it's great to see actual human beings swinging from bridges, sliding down elevator shafts, and dropping from planes.

Concerning Sala, she was in the very first two Phantom stories, being a bad guy that fell in love with the Phantom and was torn between her loyalties. Later, she returned in "The Return of the Sky Band" which ended with the Phantom helping her escape so that she could start a new life. I loved The Phantom growing up. I used to read it on the newspaper comic strips everyday. On the Sunday Paper it was a full page in color so you got more of the story! It's a real shame this film didn't turned out better; Billy Zane did an amazing job even if he comes across as a costumed Indiana Jones than a superhero (at least as we see 'em nowadays), I think he totally nailed the throwback vibe of pre-1950's movie heroes. This movie's biggest flaw to me is its weak plot.

I absolutely love this movie. It was like a blend of the charm of Superman The Movie and the swashbuckling adventure of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Billy Zane and Treat Williams are essentially Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman's Superman and Lex Luthor. My ONE issue with the film is the backstory of Quill and Kit's father. So Quill killed Kit's father when he was the Phantom... yet Kit's father's ghostly image is an elderly man. So.... was Patrick McGoohan running around in purple tights at age 60?

He was indeed that age when he was killed. The date seen on his nameplate in the crypt and what Kit tells Diana both support it. So this means Kit was off in America while his geriatric dad was still being the Phantom. The question, though, is... was this because the father can't give up the role until he dies, or because Kit was being a typical irresponsible twentysomething post-college? Either way, this makes Quill kind of dumb if he can't the difference between a sixysomething man and a twentysomething man.

Phantom is the one superhero that chooses to stay out of public knowledge unlike superman or spidey which is why he is my fav superhero before Batman. Phantom stories are also the most mysterious/suspenseful because of the jungle setting and Indiana jones kind of adventures. I'm an aspiring filmmaker and if I'm successful, I will definitely make an old school type phantom movie trying not to be cheesy.

I noticed a misunderstanding in the review about Quill. Quill stabbed the 20th Phantom in the back (that is obviuosly based on Rama Singh's similar treachery in the comic book) and took his belt. When Quill then met the Phantom in the beginning of the movie, he stabbs the Phantom in the side, causing a minor wound that is tended to by Guran later. When they meet the next time Quill tries to hit THAT wound, not the backstabbing wound.

I should also point out some changes from the original version of the Phantom. The 1st Phantom was around 20 years old when his ship was attacked by pirates and he was found by members of the pygmy tribe Bandar. Touganda is totally different tribe, who have appeared in very few stories. The origins of the Phantom's ring has, as far as I am aware of, never been mentioned by Lee Falk, but in Team Fantomen stories (stories license produced by the Swedish comic book) it is said to have been given to the 1st Phantom by Paracelsus in 1541 (or 1540) and once have been owned by Roman emperor Nero.

I think there's two reasons why super hero movie reboots of early era heroes don't do well at the box office. First, super hero or adventure movies are mostly for kids, teens or thought of as light family entertainment. Most people, especially young people, have only experienced this present day world we live in, with no frame of reference to the past. Kids watch movies like The Phantom, The Rocketeer or The Shadow and feel like they're watching something "old fashioned" and not of their time, even if it has big modern FX and contemporary actors. When The Phantom, The Rocketeer and The Shadow first came out, they WERE contemporary stories, not period pieces! They were present day super hero stories told to a present day audience, and I feel updates and reboots of such stories should also be contemporary (if you want good box office, that is!) Look at Batman and Superman. Two of the earliest super heroes, emerging in the 30's… But when the major studio movies came out, were Batman and Superman set in the 30's? No! Because they're contemporary characters, and however many more reboots there are of them, audiences will always respond better if those characters exist in THEIR OWN time period. The second reason is that the target audience for super hero movies has no idea who any of these characters are. Unlike Batman and Superman, characters like The Phantom, The Rocketeer and The Shadow didn't go on to have huge comic books followings in the coming decades, cartoons, TV shows… They were forgotten. The only people who remember the old serials or comics are the old timers, and they're not the people going to see super hero movies!

Back in the 90s, my Mom used to work at a Blockbuster and would bring me back the most random movies. This was one of them. As a kid, I thought it was pretty good. Now that I'm older, I still think this but I can't help but laugh at The Phantom's gear. Just a dude running through the jungle in a purple ass spandex jump suit. Compared to Batman or Ironman, this superhero getup is just hilarious to me.

I will always love this movie, the phantom is my favorite comic/pulp character ever created and this movie has a special place in my heart. I remember seeing this in the theater with my uncle and I was blown away by it. It's a shame we never got more movies. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake. I saw the Syfy channel movie as well which was alright. But it never resonated with me as much as the '96 movie...

I love this movie. I used to read the comics as a kid, while everyone else was reading DC or marvel, I was collecting the Phantom. Those Phantom rings they brought out as merchandise for the movie I still hold dear!

I am 50 years but still a fan of the Ghost who walks. If not for the pandemic we will be watching another movie. The Phantom 2021. They can make a tv serial casting someone. Phantom of the present time. Billy Jane was superb.

Great review, this was another film from the 90's I remember as a kid. I loved it as a kid, but I never took the time to re-evaluate it in it's entirety. It kinda grew off me as I grew up. I'll have to give this movie another watch sometime. I wonder if they plan to reboot the movie someday (I know they did that miniseries on SyFy, but I'm not gonna count that). You should consider doing a retrospective/review of certain anime movies sometime, like "Akira", "Osama Tezuka's Metropolis", "Perfect Blue" among others.

I remember when I saw this in the theater I fell asleep, and woke up to "UNBELIEVABLE!!" Very jarring. However, when I was able to rewatch it, I loved it, I was just too damn tired that night. I definitely got a mini Phantom obsession for a few months.

One of the most recognizable soundtracks used on oh so many movie trailers. It is a fun movie that has that quintessential '90's' look when a lot was done practically and VFX were limited to the absolutely necessary. And it is worth watching just to see Treat Williams chewing the scenery of every scene he is in. ;)

Man, I remember watching this when it first came out and thought it was god awful. The music score, however, was excellent. Easily one of the best action scores of the 90s. Now your review makes me want to go back and revisit it. I tried watching in on one of those free movie streaming sites, but they played commercials every fives minutes, so I bailed, but not before watching the impressive opening action sequence on the bridge. This movie really did look very nice.

I might add some more details of the character, as I am a fan. There exists a license production of Phantom stories in Scandinavia (in Sweden), which from 1972 until quite recently was in the hands of Ulf Granberg, longtime editor of the Swedish Phantom comic book, Fantomen. One such story ("The Skull Murders") inspired the movie's idea of the Skulls of Touganda.

I am a big fan of the phantom and I would love a modern reboot (I think we can all agree to forget, that 2009 monstrosity) as long as it was faithful. if done right, I think it could be modern and true to the phantom mythos.

The biggest problem with The Phantom, Shawdow and Rockateer was the marketing and the fact not many people knew of their comic origins. Especially kids who the studio seemed to be going after.
