Jose Rizal's iconic monument at the Luneta in Manila is replicated in Madrid, Spain where he stayed and studied. Here's my video feature on a visit on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 in Madrid.

Filipinos are welcome in Spain! Trad.: los filipinos son bienvenidos en España. Perhaps you don't know: 1) Emilio Aguinaldo, the Filipinas First President, spoke Spanish and Filipino, and Jose Rizal, too. 2) The first Constitution was written in Spanish. 3) The lyrics of Philippines National Antem were written in Spanish. 4) Many words in tagalog are originally Spanish. If Filipinos want to learn and speak Spanish again, many Spaniards will help them with pleasure.

By email: I downloaded the interview of that Spanish lady. I was amazed that she took the time to learn about our national hero and read the entire Ultimo Adios. She said she liked the poetry as it wasbeautifully worded and ladened with so much emotion. She could not believe how he had written such an astounding poetry given the fact that he had only a day to live. I myself have not stopped re-reading El Ultimo Adios even though I have the entire poetry by memory. Eddie Calderon Minnesota

Spanish authorities in the Philippines charged Rizal with scrupulous allegations of fomenting rebellion and decided to execute Rizal. Yet they didn't prepare for the possible consequence of their action. In two years, this action led to Spain's eventual departure from the Philippines. Obviously, they didn't have the force to counter the revolution spurred by the execution of Rizal. The trouble started when they killed 3 Filipino priests by garrote early on for alleged instigation of chaos.

Rizal is extremely an achiever (check his museum in PH) ... ahead of his time, brave as he opened up many Filipino minds thru his writings which eventually ignites a nationwide revolution.

Many say Bonifacio should have been the national hero. But after knowing things, I say it is still Rizal because of his great influence to the people. He influenced Bonifacio himself. When RIzal died, the whole country erupted in anger bringing freedom in the end.
@sorchakim9 жыл бұрын
Even after death, Rizal's "Mi Ultimo Adios" has helped the country because it has laid the foundation for an autonomous government in the Philippines. We were still perceived as a community of barbarians, incapable of self-government when we were annexed by the U.S. This is the poem the U.S. representative Henry Cooper recited before the US Congress and it made them realized the nobility of Rizal, they have enacted the Philippine Bill of 1902 enabling self-government for our country as a result. A hero in life and in death.

Finally, what Rizal did was to spark the raging and the final revolution. If Rizal wanted integration instead of revolution, then is Rizal a hero of independence and liberty? I say yes. He wanted liberty and independence as any other Filipino of that time. But Rizal has strategy and he knows timing. He wasn't the brain nor the leader of the revolution. But he was the catalyst that sparked the final blow.

Not really. He just wanted us to be a proper Province rather than just a colony or rather than an indepent nation or an autonomous province (which I don't think existed back then). So it's like if someone back when we were a commonwealth of the US advocated for our full incorporation into the US as a state. Neither of which happened.

1 of 2) Rizal wanted the Philippines to be recognized as a province of Spain. He wasn't convinced yet at that time that Filipinos were ready to be independent. But Bonifacio, a revolutionary leader, wanted independence. Rizal's argument was that Filipinos have to learn first how to govern a country before going independent, and that the local may learn it if Spain recognized the Philippines as a part of it and grant the locals equal rights with the Spaniards. Bonifacio then agreed.

@virusmagnet, fyi,The independence process of the Philippines started in 1936 under commonwelth law which United States allow it in 10 years time thus applied all territories. After Spanish and American war, all territories of Spain became part of the United States. Purto Rico, Cuba was bought $25 million and Philiipines was bought $20 million Guam and Dominican Republic . However none of these territories had representatives, it was done deal between U S and Spain.Your comments is way off.

You know why he is in madrid? Beacuse he is a great great great grandson of queen Urraca of Toledo Spain, from her partner Don pedro, Jose Rizal is an alias which is okay to use alias if you want to hide your identity. I am very proud of him, such a good man untill his death.

Emailed to PhilVoiceNews@aol.com: I agree with you completely. But those Filipino diplomats are enjoying their posting in beautiful Spain so much that it may never cross their minds to do anything to make the Philippines known not only to the Spaniards but the whole world as well. are there any español here? If you'd ask me I want spain to be part of philippines again, Emilio Aguinaldo cheated on us that play was inappropriate he loves to eat his own money, Rizal know what's best. what about us Filipinos we're kinda suffering because of corruption mostly latino filipinos are affected. (some people with low class Spanish Decent) even us from Iloilo can't run our own business like how it ran before back in Spanish times because of the government. all we can do is restoring our city(so limited) all i can say para sa gobierno ta dedicado dapat, di mo ma comparar ang past ky mas ma apreciar ko pa to, we have to move on and follow Rizal segurado mas efectivo pa and gina implementar ni Rizal sa aton, ky importante guid ang original nga freedom,

May sarili tayong wika.

I am always sad whenever Spain is portrayed as a villain by the Philippine media (especially the evening telenovela) ... it is as if nothing good was ever brought by Spain to the Philippines and that suffering and more suffering are the only things that they offered... it is as if all problems and bad things that we have today are caused by the Spanish occupation - as if Spain did not take an effort to recognize those who were born here aside from those that anti-Spanish propagandist showed ....

I know spain did horrible things to my country Philippines but if we weren't for them we are not civilized or worst still fighting because of different tribes that occupies the archipelago. Haters gonna hate we still have something to thank spain for.

Actually you guys would probably not even be born. The Philippines we see today, with lots of mixed races was a result of Spanish conquest. Not everyone is a mixed race but the consequences of colonization opened the Philippines up to the path it is today. The language, the culture, the way you look (if you're mestizo), is because of Spain. Additionally, it was Spain that unified the Philippine archipelago, before the Spanish arrival, Philippines wasn't even one country. Also the first Filipinos were Spanish.

What do you mean the Spanish borrowed surnames from their neighbors? Lol you mean names derived from Latin? That doesn't mean they borrowed them since Spanish is descended from Latin
