Welcome! Every now and then Antifascists get some news coverage and this video gets a bunch more views! This is an educational resource that I made to help the public better understand these ideas. If you scroll down you'll see that I do my best to engage with people and have a general policy of not removing comments. The vast, vast majority of my replies, as you'll see, are to people who simply comment without watching the video. So again, I would urge you to actually watch it before commenting or you'll only make a fool of yourself! I've no doubt that a lot of people aren't really here to learn or discuss and just want to express their feelings of sympathy with fascism - I leave their comments up and reply to them anyway because I want everyone else to see, and for them to know themselves, that they can't pretend to be rational and sensible or expect to be taken seriously by people who want to use their brains and hearts to better themselves. I do remove comments that contain slurs, threats, fascist propaganda, or antisemitic conspiracy theories, as sadly all too many do.

Take me, I’m a queer Arab woman. I have a lot I could complain about but I don’t like giving power over to others to control my destiny keeping me where I am. So to revise your statement: Fascism is authoritarian Communism is authoritarian Authoritarian = authoritarian. @zmdumpbox23405 жыл бұрын
tl;dr - Thanks for not getting triggered, thanks for being honest with your pain, thanks for reflecting on your beliefs no matter the direction they go, that's actually very healthy and pro-human behavior. From a cognitive behavioral point-of-view (thanks therapy) - emotional pain, like physical pain, is your body signalling to your psyche that something happening to you that goes against the worldview that allows you to be healthy *DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT SHIT NOW!!!* Generally speaking, a healthy mindset (read: a mindset that allows us to be relational to other humans, typically pro-human/pro-social thinking and behaviors) allows us to examine the outside event that is causing us emotional pain, how that event is causing us emotional pain (is it challenging our belief systems? going against our expectations?), and then coming up with a solution that not only resolves the event, but enlightens us as to how to deal with a similar occurrence in the future that will mitigate the intensity of emotional pain again, for ourselves and for second parties - this builds emotional resiliency. The more I ruminate on the things I learned in therapy, the more I begin to realize (way moreso with conservative/rightwing thinkers, but liberals/leftists can get into this too if they're not careful/thoughtful) that Outrage, Cancel Culture, Name-Calling, Morality Judgments, Cognitive Bias, Strawman arguments, etc. etc. etc. can reliably be chalked up to emotional dysregulation. Triggers (say, misgendering for trans folk, higher taxes for capitalists) are typically keywords or concepts that set off an emotional doomsday snowball-story in the triggered person's mind that makes them think that their very existence is under threat - this is what normally happens when debates/offenses get personal. Your mind tells you to fight (by obliterating the threat with name-calling or death threats, not just keeping it at arms' length), or to take flight (by shutting down the conversation via stonewalling), 'cuz if you don't, *YOU'RE GONNA DIE.* Which is ridiculous (unless you're a lawmaker, or being threatened by those wielding violent power, like cops or muggers), because words alone don't threaten the life of a human; it's these trigger words, these Big Red Panic Buttons in our minds, that set off a reactivity chain reaction in other people who don't have that emotional resiliency or aren't experienced in critical thinking. If you wish to continue holding beliefs that can be classified as "right-wing," I personally do not agree with your beliefs and I will vote against them in elections and debate, but I'm fine with the act of you merely having them, because at the stage of merely having them, they alone don't threaten my life as somebody slowly becoming anti-capitalist/pro-socialist. But I can only ask that you keep in mind that, when you hear a left-wing, debunk-able opinion, the deliverers of those ideas are trying to deliver them in good faith, only challenging your held beliefs, not trying to literally control your life or your identity against your will *at the point of discussion.* Because after all, whether you re-examine your beliefs or double down on them is completely up to you - you are the one who wields power over yourself.

And at least Flat-Earthers and Pauling's acolytes aren't advocating a system based on hatred and envy that caused more than 100 million deaths. (Amusingly, I have better debates with flat-earthers than with socialists. Sure, they occasionally delve into ad hominems or psycho-analyzing, and they'll often jump to hilariously wrong conclusions mixed with a stubborn refusal to understand metaphors--but they're also more likely to try to put together a logical argument (even though they fail) or try to cite science (even when they badly misquote it, like Michaelson-Morley), but they're far, far less likely to devolve into schoolyard name-calling, vicious personal attacks, absolute water-is-not-wet lies, or I--know-you-are-but-what-am-I trolling.)

I'm not sure I would've done it without this video. I had this idea that Antifa meant black block throwing punches and I didn't know if that was something I had the courage for. Realising that it could be more low-key and domestic was super cool: I tore down posters, and I did some organising. This was a very interesting video. I wonder if you gave any thought to how the term "antifascism" itself has different connotations in different places? I ask this because I am Italian, and when I think of antifascism I immediately think of the National Liberation Committee, WW2 and its immediate aftermath, and our Constitution. Antifascism, in fact, is one of the founding values of the Italian constitution, which was written immediately after WW2 by the antifascists of the time, who had just freed Italy from over 20 years of fascist regime with the help of the Allied forces. I'm saying this because, while Italy right now is in the mist of the right-wing populist uprisal, and some of the same debates happening in the anglosaxon world are all too present, I think it would be difficult to "shift the blame" on antifascists in some of the ways you discussed in the video. No matter your poitical leaning, it is generally accepted in Italy that antifascism is a "good thing" and that without it we wouldn't be the country we are today. I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts on this :)
@andrea-md6cm6 жыл бұрын
@lemondrizzlecake77666 жыл бұрын
Se guardi la voce "Antifa" su Wikipedia, per esempio, lo dice chiaramente: "The ADL makes a point that the label "antifa" should be limited to "those who proactively seek physical confrontations with their perceived fascist adversaries," and not be misapplied to include all counter-protesters."
@OfftopicStuff5 жыл бұрын
O_o this is not at all the case in germany. i just realised from your comment that "antifa" could default to be of positive connotation; it absolutely is not here. it think that boils down to a few reasons (that i can think of right now): 1. the term has never been used the way you describe, historically. our values are not stated in opposition of anything, our first constitutional right reads "Human dignity shall be inviolable.", not "The state shall oppose anything that threatens to violate human dignity". in general, opposition often just doesn't vibe too well in our culture (my experience, as all this is), and there are many more or less directly hostile terms to denote opposition. 2. the biggest leftist party in germany today is in the eyes of many a more or less direct descendant from the SED, the only party in the east side of seperated germany, who oversaw among other things stasi surveillance. it is hard to find somebody who would have sympathy for the sed, and even harder to find somebody to openly say so. by proxy, many disregard the lefyist party here, as they see some figures from the sed (less and less over time of course, but the image sticks). As antifa is generally regarded as a leftist movement here (and in a feedback loop, it is more and more, as others dissociate), and so antipathy against left political actors bleeds over. 3. our press love to misrepresent/smear antifa protest (inhowfar it is their fault that this kind of stuff sells is debateable). headlines are even more sensationalist than usual, and that is not unique to tabloids, renowned publishers are often no better, except for their phrasing. so the general negative public image is often reinforced by headlines about a burning car rather than a manhunt against a migrant (well, the car likely belonged to a white middleclass person, which *could as well have been me*, or a lowerclass person who really needed it and who can now be further instrumentalised to argue that antifa hurts the little 'man' and that "we are here to really help you"). and sadly, whether any of what i said here holds any water, heavily right-wing politicians as a matter of fact are much more widely accepted here right now than even moderately left-wing ideas (relative to our center of course, so universal healthcare i.e. wouldn't count as leftist here).
@UserJWR5 жыл бұрын
@Jim P Fascists are still very real. Look at the Charlottesville riots, look at right-wing parties that are rising all across Europe. As the video states, they don't call themselves fascists or Nazis (for obvious reasons), but they repeat similar or even the same talking points while often relativizing fascist regimes and their actions. Also, as the video explains quite thoroughly, fascism is not purely defined by its stance on authoritarianism, neither are most antifascist movements. There are quite a lot of classical communists and tankies in Antifa movements, so it would not make sense to them to frame supporters of state and totalitarianism as fascists, just based on these qualities. TBH, everything you say is featured and discussed in the video, so I am just going to assume that either you did not watch it, that you did not understand it, or that you just don't care.
@UserJWR5 жыл бұрын
@@OfftopicStuff Yes, unfortunately the general German public has a weird stance on antifascism, especially since the G20 summit in Hamburg. Luckily, the German law and constitution features some built in measures against fascism and has a rather large consensus in the public, so I am not that worried about fascism becoming a real threat here anytime soon (even though I admit, the AfD looks really scary). But it is my experience that the public has a very strong stance against fascism (in my hometown the counterprotest against an AfD assembly was the biggest protest the city saw in the last 70 years I think). Unfortunately, Germany has a rather poor history with both fascism and left wing ideology (DDR and RAF) and centrist opinions dominate the political sphere, which ultimately helps fascism more than leftism or antifascist movements.

Aside from this being a great video...I don’t know if this is appropriate, but...I’m American with ADHD. I’ve got to commend Oliver, he’s got the most articulate pronunciation of any English speaker I’ve ever heard. Normally, prose-style speech can be difficult to follow for me, especially if it’s prolix and filled with the “um’s,” “ah’s,” and stammers that go along with extemporaneous speaking (paradoxically, I don’t usually have a problem understanding people with stammers or other speech impediments, because the uniqueness of it enables me to have a much easier time following along). I’m aware it’s edited and he’s reading/reciting from a script, but having recorded and edited my own speech, I know how difficult that can be, or at least it’s a skill that isn’t easily mastered. Cheers!

I know I started to fall down that rabbit hole. Once people like Thunderf00t and The Amazing Atheist started talking about SJWs and Feminism, I quickly found myself agreeing because "Free Speech" and "but what about", the Drunken Peasants Podcast started having guests like Sargon and what not, and I started subscribing to them, and I was quickly falling down the rabbit hole with no return in sight. Then I started to see how they reacted to LGBT people, especially Trans people, and I started to feel squicky. Then there was a lot of "Hillary must not win", and I went, yeah, I mean, she's not great, but ehh.... and then it came to "Trump isn't that bad" and I finally realized, these people aren't what I thought they were. I think it was actually HBomberGuy that got me starting to really reevaluate things, I had already discovered him awhile back because of his Fallout 3 video, and started looking for other videos, and then he started videos about feminism and things like that. Then I discovered /r/traaaaaaaans which lead me to ContraPoints and /r/CompleteAnarchy, which lead me to Shaun, which led me to this channel and so on and so forth.

@katrinal3536 жыл бұрын
Ironically, neither thunderf00t nor the amazing atheist, have said anything negative about lgbt, or positive about Trump. I wouldn't put TAA anywhere near the Sargon-type circlejerk at all, and TF has mostly dealt with the Anita Sarkeesian meme. The real rabbit hole is Sargon, which is essentially, as I'd call it, "chaotically conservative". I do think a lot of youtubers on "that side" suffer from PR just because of their association, and their clickbait, though. Tim Pool for example, while still reasonable in his opinions, his controversial clickbait draws in the right-wing circlejerk, and he kinda does that on purpose. Sargon, also used to be very "rational" but has devolved to being the definition of the circlejerk, and his audience has degenerated to the bottom of the barrel and that includes his content. Chris Ray Gun, which shouldn't even be mentioned here, because of his association with some of them, went from being considered a meme commentary channel, to a political right-wing commentary, by many, which is not at all what it is. It's so dumb, because all of them are massively different in their opinions and their goals. As I see it, the problem with that perception, is network effects, combined with clickbait, and ideological immigration from reactionary audiences, making you feel like you're in a tight clique, even noticing the groupthink. That's because many of those KZbinrs don't tend to dedicate videos to criticizing right/alt-right/fascist things, because either they agree, but also because, ironically, it's _too obvious_ that there's no point in criticizing something _so obviously_ bad as fascists. And hence, since they don't _explicitly_ promote different ideas, and associate with each other more closely, the ideological "immigrants" find a clique they can call their own, even if they're not. I don't even know why I'm typing all this, but I do feel that the network dynamics here, are not to be underestimated, and I don't want to see KZbinrs thought of differently to what they are.

About a year after this video came out I got into an argument with someone where they stated that I had to claim to be Antifa or I was a Nazi (or at least a Nazi-sympathizer, and they did state those were equivalent in their eyes). At the time I was really just starting to understand leftism and anti-fascism and while I opposed fascism (of course) I didn't believe I "was Antifa" because I myself hadn't done anything specifically anti-fascist, and specifically because I had stated that I was a pacifist ( I was still working on how I view violence with politics, this video was part of that). Because of this, this person pointed me to this video (which I had actually already partially watched) and said that if after I watched it I didn't claim to be Antifa I really was a Nazi. I ,upon re-watch this 5 or so years later, cannot understand why they were so stuck on this, when in the first 5 minutes of this video, Abby's brother ;), explains that it is not something you are, but something you do, and that it is extreme anti-fascism, not all who oppose fascism are antifa. I've come to really appreciate this video, for helping me understand my own understandings, both the political and the interpersonal.

Whenever someone pretends that my ideology is as much as a choice as a fascists or neonazi is, I feel so powerless because there is a fundamental misunderstanding. I may be able to hide my trans and/or gayness, i can't hide my disability, my partner can't hide his race. We have way less choices and none of them guarantee our safety.
@LampjePockelé9 ай бұрын
56:45 in Belgium this tactic is often used by not differentiating between different kinds of immigration. We have a huge influx of people from the Netherlands and France each year. It's because we have 3 official languages, of which 2 are widely used (french and dutch). You can also navigate our society quite easily if you only speak English. However, when a white dutch person immigrates to Belgian they are obviously still an immigrant and can be used in immigrant statistics. There was a widely spread headline that said 'more then 50% of babies born in a big city have at least one non-belgian parent'. This makes it sound like 50% of babies are biracial, while in fact the vast majority were white but just had a dutch, french, british or even german parent.

@topicalturtle86854 жыл бұрын
@@SadistModeOn For sure, that's a bad thing to be taught, but it's not like the abolition of slavery was the only thing that sparked the civil war, it was more federalism vs confederalism, bear in mind that the states weren't united at this point, and yet Lincoln, who only won in some of the states, had the ability to exert control over all of the other territories that hadn't even become states yet, and couldn't actually vote to my knowledge. So it always seems pretty disingenous to suggest that it was a bunch of whites trying to keep slavery that triggered the civil war, it was really more just their percieved lack of democratic input that led to them to rebel

@@topicalturtle8685 wdym the states "weren't united" we had a literal constitution that created a centralized federal government. It was infact over the states rights to own slaves. 22:34 I never thought I'd see this mentioned so widely. This event led to one of my best friends in HS committing suicide, as they were said student's partner. I remember vividly my boyfriend receiving the campus alert text while we were driving, marking the point when Scout had been gunned down. I had no idea how much my life, and the lives of almost all LGBT/Left/GA Tech and many others, would change. My grandpa had died a week earlier, and while my bf and I didn't know Scout, we were still shocked and confused. Many of my friends knew them very well, and had been involved in GA Tech's LGBT organization alongside Scout. A few days later, my bf came home with the news that our friend had shot herself in her car less than an hour after walking into a gun show, and purchasing a shotgun. If gun control were a thing, they may have been made aware that she had many mental health issues. The winter following was one of the darkest times in my life, along with my bf. She was one of the first people I came out to, and my bf was her close friend. We all went to the same HS. Several friends of ours were arrested and received felony charges for the protests mentioned in the headline. Alongside all this was the early parts of the Trump presidency and the feeling like this was just the beginning. I'm glad things aren’t as bad as I expected, but I am forever changed. It turned me into a person who actually cares about politics
