Logan is one of the most unique superhero movies to come out in the past decade. That’s largely because it’s not a superhero movie at all, it’s a Western. What makes Logan a masterpiece is how it takes some of the defining themes of the western genre - searching, enclosure, and the end of an era - and updates it to not only reflect the final moments of one of the most beloved comic book characters of all time, but to make a rather sly statement on the current state of the film industry. I can't even think about that ending without tearing up a little. I went and saw Logan three times in the theater and every time you could hear people sobbing when Laura goes back to turn the cross. That is one of the most powerful moments I've ever seen in a movie.

I literally teared up reading your description of recalling the ending of Logan because of how deeply the ending affected me. Then again I'm a sensitive lil baby so take that one way or another.

Im glad im not the only one who got emotional during this movie. Ive never been moved more by a scene in a movie. Not sure if it was because wolverine has always been my favorite xman or just how the scene was done. Probably both

I got a very "Fury Road" vibe from it. It has minimal story, but is carried almost exclusively by its characters

Movies with gigantic plots are getting old. I'm sorry, but it's hard to connect with a movie when the plot is nonsensically evil bad guy tries to destroy the world through nonsensically complex means. That's basically the plot of every super hero movie except for the ones that actually turn out to be good.

The more complicated the plot, the more it relies upon convenient circumstances and unrealistic motivations for it to possibly happen. *cough BvS In the process of trying to create a "masterpiece", too many people create something that looks smart on the surface, but requires a liberal dose of suspension of disbelief. *cough The Dark Knight Rises When a complicated plot is done well though, its much more fulfilling than a simple one. Like woah.....that blew my mind. I don't really see this movies much though, but instead in tv where they have more time to do the story right.

It's SO fitting that a movie based on Old Man Logan would be a Western since the original comic story was basically the plot of Unforgiven, even Mark Millar admitted it

It will never be Jackman. Unless of course he were to die and you were able to live for a couple hundred years so his identity can enter the public domain AND if anyone alive then still cared about him being the original Wolverine to make Hugh Jackman a holographic actor.

This has more in common with Wolverine The End than Old Man Logan. Some people wish Old Man Logan had the depth of this movie.

Well Mangold admitted in Making Of Logan that it's more based on X-23: Innocence Lost than Old Man Logan, although Old Man Logan elements were borrowed. Yes, Unforgiven is definitely one of them and it fits Logan's character perfectly.

holy crap, I've just noticed the parallel between Shane and Fallout. Seriously, hear me out: at the end of Fallout 1, the player character has saved the Vault, but has become something else, something wild, so its forced to leave forever. In Fallout 2, you're the descendant of this character, born in a tribe on the wild and you show up to the different cities as an outsider, helping them, but eventually leaving.

Zackapo - Except the main character in Shane, in the end, did not change, did not "break the mold". Contrast that against a tame Vault dweller changing into something wild.

I'm surprised you didn't address the "disappointments" motive of this movie. I think it's more interesting. How this movie is intentionally disappointing us. We start the movie off learning that Charles Xavier, the father figure of the X-men is now treated as a little baby and is constantnly drugged just to prevent him from killing everyone. All the mutants are dead. Logan goes into a Family's home in good intention just to find out he brought death on all of them. Logan giving the worst requiem speech I've seen in a movie just to freak out and pass out. in the end it's still a Greek tragedy and all the "Real" mutants died off and the only mutants that exists are lab grown which means that mutants are now extinct. Charles Xavier killed all the X-men because of his dementia

That's what I love about the X-Men movies (and Nolan's Batman series too), there's so much depth going on below the surface. Fantasy should be used for exploring the human condition, and feature analogies and allegory. That's what good fantasy does, and that's what the X-Men movies have been doing wonderfully, in addition to telling tall tales of superheroes and superpowers.

They intend them. Writers, good writers that is, understand the importance of symbolism, analogy, and allegory. They are the very soul of story telling, and most especially for fantasy story telling. Without that level of depth fantasy is pure fluff. Fantasy is best when it's used to explore the human condition from a perspective outside of the norm.

hafabee Just wanted to point out the irony in your statement saying good fantasy writers use analogy, and allegory. JRR Tolkien has a quote in derect opposition to those things. "I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history - true or feigned- with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author." -Tolkien Considering he's "the" fantasy writer I just think that's funny.

Eddie the Head; But The Lord of the Rings is completely analogous with Catholicism, and an allegory for ending war. Tolkien was definitely conscious of this when he wrote it, The Lord of the Rings is steeped in symbolism that is as true today as it was when he wrote it.

You can enclose land because there is a limited amount, the right guarantees the benefits and costs are exclusive to the user and the value of its option-use can be included in its price. The interaction of concepts are infinite. Even if mankind discovers all laws of science, we can't claim how many techne applications would exist. Content on KZbin is created so quickly, I think intellectual property and patent lawyers are in a permanent lag in a sort of arms race.

Interestingly it is one of the few works of art not "officially" cited by the authors as inspirations yet there are scenes that look like a cinematic shout out. It is like with "Westworld" which took so much ideas and iconography from Fallout 4 and didn't even shy away from citing game influences from Bioshock to Red Dead Redemption yet not once mentioned Fallout.

So from the world being openly racist to mutants, they sterilized them and started breeding the useful mutant for use. That's Orwellian+Ayn Randian And what happened to Magneto and the Brotherhood? Sorry but there's more to episodes than can be summed up in three lines. Charlie Brooker is a borderline genius, and the meanings and Philosophy of each Black Mirror is not always blatantly obvious. Admittedly some episodes are easier to understand than others, but they're all extremely complex and very cleverly directed with nuances and subtle little things that make a big difference.

and this kinda make me feel kinda sad for the MCU. While they continue to make more money out of the formula they have been using, its hard to see that they will go out of their way and break their established mold, to make a movie like Logan in the near future. The type of movies they will continue to provide will always serve to fit the narrative of continuity and an upcoming sequel, that will usually hurt its quality of having to fulfill all that requirements

Kudakwashe Timba Logan isn't the first movie to incorporate other genre with superhero movie winter soldier was a spy thriller, Ant-Man was a heist movie, homecoming is a teen/coming of the age movie, gotg and Volume 2 are sci-fi movies.......so nothing new here

@@FunkMastaMegaFlex I’ve only watched the first few episodes so far, but the first episode left me with such a unique feeling that I could literally feel in my gut. Beautifully well written. Just sad enough to make you feel for everyone involved, but not so sad that it’s difficult to watch. It takes itself seriously, but not so seriously that it can’t have comedy too. Great show. Too bad it got canceled for no reason.

Ahh beat me to it, I'm uploading a video on Logan too this friday, but I really liked this one! One small thing; I thought the 'nature' symbols were a little far fetched, in my opinion it is more likely that; Charles tending the garden served to juxtapose his new life with his former purpose, Logan wanting to buy the Sunseeker served to show his desire to escape from this world (where do you find more solitude than on the endless ocean?) and Charles comparing Laura to wilflife served to justify her foot claws. The enclosure part was pretty interesting though :)

When I left the theather after watching Age of Ultron, Guardians 2, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, I begun to realize how much these movies are bad. The more you think, the more they suck. Quite the opposite for Logan. This movie grows on you. He is so fucking good!

Dimitri Bitu over the past few years I've been certain that comic book movies should be coming to an end, they got too popular and too much of a comedic thing. Logan changed that completely. I'm so happy of what James Mangold created

Dunno if any of you are old enough to remember this, but in the 80's I began falling in love with Marvel comics, especially X-Men and Wolverine. Then in the 90's the comic book industry began pumping out ridiculous numbers of new titles and overselling the shit out of issues just to make money. It ruined the comic industry until image started putting out fresh titles. I believe the same is going to be true for comic movies. Folks are going to just get sick of them, especially when garbage like BvS, Suicide Squad, etc keep getting pumped out. We'll lose trust and they'll move on to some other genre.

When I think "Modern Feminist Film," I imagine films like Wonder Woman, Mad Max: Fury Road, the two recent Star Wars films and maybe Moana. All of which are large-scaled stories of heroes and villains where the story just so happens to center around a woman. I do *NOT* imagine a run-of-the-mill harmless comedy that just so happens to also have ghosts in it for the sole purpose of justifying calling the film a reboot. Ghostbusters 2016 flew too close to TWO suns (being the reboot of an 80's science-comedy AND being a potential flag and mascot for the brand that is often referred to as "feminism") and it couldn't handle the pressure associated with either brand. As a result, it got fucking roasted (critically and financially). Either that, or films with the word "Ghost" in them are cursed to suffer political torment. This doesn't bode well for future Ghost Rider films.

I though the movie was a statement about super-heros characters, we don't finding them amazing only because their super powers but for human of their fights. A movie about selfishness and "stand up" for your people beyond any forced order. I don't know.

Everybody is so distracted on how good Logan was that no one thought how stupid is a adamantium skeleton in a child which will probable grow up.

I dont think the directly mention it in the movie so i cant be sure but its made clear in the comics that x-23 doesnt have a full metal skeleton like Logan. I think thats what they were trying to hint at in the video with her arms and legs cut open. they implanted the claws there

Logan is better? Logan is generic and shallow. Don't confuse the mere superfical mention of dark themes as essence. Which is exactly what happens here - dark themes like death and personal tragedy are just simple means for creating drama here and nothing more. They aren't explored - the plot still revolves around escaping the bad guys and saving the children. Which is extremely generic. Logan has a simple plot structure with basic story arc and basic 2Dimensional charecters. The script is bad and filled with "fucks" so that it seems more mature and appeals to 16 year olds. The Dark Knight series is multy-layerd and just cannot be compared to this mediocre movie.

Ehhh that's a pretty one-sided view of enclosure, at least in the American West. Part of the problem for poor farmers in the West were indeed free for animals to graze in -- which included the incredibly wealthy cattle barons. When driving cattle, un-enclosed land was "free" for ranging, and cattle were legally allowed to walk across your fields and strip them clean of the food. I get how it plays in to this story, but enclosure laws actually protected poor homesteaders against the rich too, and was not as nefarious as you make it out to be. Actually, public land (National Parks, BLM land, etc.) have more protections than private land that was un-enclosed, ironically. Heh.
