Thoreau's work is a proof that men in solitude can perceive great philosophic idea and convert it into a masterpiece.

It's amazing how solitude sometimes being described as an achievable state, a relation to society or an esteemed, prerequisite training stage of a higher spiritual existence. A dialogue in own thinking is not in solitude, it's just mental activities done alone. Solitude is basic to being , although not to too many of humans, as necessary as sunshine, open space, clean air ,water and rest. If not exist in solitude, beings that prefer that total aloneness yet complete immersion will suffocate, being smoldered. Just like without air, space, water and sunshine. It's a must, the common denominator is just the appearance of their yearnings. Thanks for posting.

Thanks so much that really helped as I felt bombarded at normal speed. I didn’t know until now that speed could be adjusted. I’m delighted to know that and I’m going to return to other clips and slow them down. Wishing you a lovely day

No one who seeks solitude needs to be told what it is or why he needs it.. He just goes there.

Solitude is needed...I hate the frase "humans are social beings" I think that is a conditioning religion politics and society enforce on us...I love being alone I revel in my solitude I am at my best in my own company and I love myself enough to enjoy myself on my own...I find it sad that people can't stand being alone...society needs to go back to basics

solitude, the need for it, is a result of the mechanisms of human community being corrupted by financial systems. its not about the individual, its about all the ways human culture has forced the individualism of the person, to such a degree, that we know see solitude as normal, even admirable.

No mention of Carl Jung! I'm enjoying quite a psychological reset in my period of solitude. I doubt that there's any one size fits all regarding this matter. Some of these great thinkers are irritatingly prescriptive. For a start, there are introverted and extroverted personalities.

Dogs and dog owners hava revoked other people's right to solitude, tranquillity and personal space in modern american influenced societies, on the pretence of "animal" defence. There can be no solitude and contemplation with helllish growls springing all the time from everywhere.

To be a real human-being , we all need solitude for searching for GOD ! We never accompany with other people and we have to go for HIM totally alone. So, -Solitude- is prerequisite and obligation of spiritual purification for "Servant of GOD" ! If you need other humans...... you're NOT real servant of GOD ! A real devoter of GOD loves solitude itself only with his/her eternal Lord !!!

I find it ironic that someone like Thoreau who descended from Europeans who "escaped" from tyrany in Europe to "freedom" in a virgin country like America which they expropriated from the native indians who had lived there for centuries in simple harmony with nature without contemplating that land could be bought and sold for private exploitation and then contemplate the stupidity of materialism.

hell yea its ironic. But if you think about it, the individuals that fled from europe to north america probably at the time weren't aware of the final effect that their mass migration would end up having. I'd doubt Thoreau personally did any expropriating himself. I'd think it was more so the overall effect

You are of an obvious deficiency in knowledge of the politics of natives both pre-colonization and during colonization. The natives were just as, if not more savage than that of European settlers. Allow me to recall a story in which a certain tribe traveled hundreds and hundreds of miles in order to kill a single creek. To come to the conclusion that the natives lived in peace and harmony is of complete phantasmagoria. The tribes of both northern america and southern america were at an almost constant state of war with each other and more than often would stop nothing short of annihilation in order to see the enemy tribe dead. Also, one cannot view owning land or property as an inherently materialistic value. In fact, one should only view it as the defense of ones own internal prospects (something entirely outside of the realm of materialism). Look into the instinct of creating a proximity of safety which is instilled in every man from ages long past. I know that in Jack Donovan's book The Way of Men he gives a relatively detailed explanation to this instinct.

Ivan I completely agree with your statement. The native americans were not any more peacef than the europeans and every person has a natural desire for shelter, safety, food, and to procreate. That is the very basis of how life replicates itself. All life seeks these things and all of life seeks to extend its genes at the expense of others. It can be seen in all of the natural world. Even plants try to take over other plants. Life is both chaotic and orderly, beautiful and brutal.

Ivan ha did you read that in a text book? The fact is that we were completely peaceful and only began fighting when our food source was being exploited. Dont believe everything you read. I'm decendant from Black Elk cousin to Crazy Horse. If you want real history get it fom the people lived here, not whom invaded.
