All Change! Thanks for uploading your update - always a pleasure to watch one of your videos. With reference to the Roger Bisby and Heat Pump subject. I think his point was that the current government annual target for heat pump installation compared to the available workforce is the issue. Of course (in my opinion) there is a fundamental problem with the industry - not all plumbers are equal - and we have a generation of fitters who have earned a comfortable income ‘slinging combis’ on the wall without any ability to select the right size boiler, carry out a heat loss survey on the property, size pipework appropriately, and set up the controls to achieve maximum efficiency. Of course with high temperature heat sources they were able to get away with that. Heat Pumps being low(er) temperature high flow units are totally unforgiving to the ‘sling it on the wall’ approach. Get it wrong and it will either not work or it will work but cost you a fortune. There is a lot of negative coverage of ‘heat pumps’ and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the heat pump unit - they are a well proven technology. The problem is marrying the heat pump to the house and that is where it can all go badly wrong. Any householder considering to go heat pump really needs to do their homework to understand the key points of how the new system will work and expected performance and running cost. How much space is need for plant in the house and likely locations for the external unit, all of this will set them up to select the right installer (who is capable of doing system design) and weed out those who are not up to speed. Heat Geek on YT is a good site and they do offer training and have ‘an umbrella scheme’.

Your absolutely bang on mate, I do a heat loss for every boiler I quote now and do my best to make it as efficient as possible, this obviously ends up costing more, I haven't won a gas boiler quote in a while but by rights everyone now should be doing what I'm doing. I used to sub to a heat pump company, they couldn't get enough installers. The money was decent but the units were just being slung in, I refused to lower myself to them standards, I went to a call-back on a unit that another contractor had fitted and the install was appalling, systems were often mis sold and I didn't want my name on them. I have fitted heat pumps with great effect on systems and houses that are designed for a heat pump, but I have also ripped them out on jobs that are not suitable without spending a fortune

@@PlumbLikeTom Thanks for replying Tom. Like I said before it’s like the Wild West. Part of the solution is customers have to wise up. Of course not all customers have the capability of doing that - but many have capability but cannot be arsed. There is no point trying to win jobs on cost. Skilled heat pump installers should be carefully choosing their customers and walk away of lowest price jobs. Choose an informed customer who knows what he is letting himself in for, knows that to get an efficient cost effective install - it is going to incur upfront costs (heat loss, equipment selection and system design) AND is likely to require significant adaptations to the house which may incur collateral damage on finished floors/walls.

Spot on Tom, no lack of fitters, my towns flooded, its a lack of quality. Iv had the argument with alan hart on numerous occasions, fast track training centres, trades in a race to the bottom. Many experienced quality fitters starting to learn its a mugs game, compulsory registration, competing against throw it in chancers and the cartel that is GSR, for a monthly magazine. Good trade if can accept being wuhaned in later life, fortunately retired now after 45 years installation of bbu and iron pipe wack, like you say just a shame for all the bullshit. Watch them knees and back. Enjoy life when your older.

Thanks for the support mate, plumbing is one of them jobs where it takes years to learn, there are no shortcuts to experience, it seems to me that the trade is moving away from people that can do everything, I get a lot of jobs where other plumbers have been and not known what the pipes are on older systems, if it's not a combi on the wall there a bit lost

Top work again Tom, not sure heat pumps are the future to be honest, the only real solution is very cheap electricity, we could all just have electric heaters then, no proper investment in power stations over the years, need more nuclear, tidal and wind power solutions, fossil fuel needs to go though, sooner the better, that’s coming from a gas installer with 30 plus years in the trade.

It's always a tricky one mate, to be honest if they don't turn freely they probably need changing, I do quite a bit of work in schools, some are better than others to work in, I just explain that I need to turn the water and most are fine, obviously you get the odd few who won't let you but all you can do then is come back in the school holidays, I won't ever take a chance in a school, things can go wrong very quickly in plumbing

Roger seems like a nice guy but he's got a vendetta against heat pumps and it's clouding his judgment. The industry is at a bit of a cross roads between them and maybe hydrogen who knows. Heat pumps do work the installation let's them down on a lot of occasions though and that's down to a lack of understanding and experience on the part of a lot of installers and of course there are some scam quick training courses that won't help them. But like them or not they're here to stay in some form so might as well up skill and take the work. 😊 Anyways enough of that ha ha. Bit of luck you hadn't ripped that out yet. Coming along nicely. 👍

I used to sub to a heat pump company and fitted quite a few, like you say in the right environment they are perfect, they had one guy on the radio who' electric bill was 17k, I took one out of a customers house not so long ago where her electric bill was nearly 7k and that was before the price increase, we need to better insulate the houses and where possible install PV, I think heat pumps could well be the future but bad design and bad installations might give them a reputation they can't get over, thanks for the support as always mate
