So many exciting plants that are new to me. Wonderful video and I especially loved the fluffy waterlilies and the story about the nearly extinct plant.

Thank you so much for these vids. It is such a treat to walk round with you and Alberto. How on earth do they control mildews, fungus, pests and insects in such a concentrated environment?

I have been enjoying these videos so much. The saga of cafe marron plant is quite interesting. Loved the details about the leaf strategy to avoid beeing eaten by the tortoises...Those water lilies are absolutely gorgeous and oh my, those amazing ferns. I Will try to get the book from Carlos Magadelena, What a treat getting to know him in person. Thanks Rachel. Wishing you merry festivity season and may 2020 bring all the success you deserve ♥️♥️

Absolutely fascinating - especially love the cafe marron plant. That leaf adaptation is just incredible. Fern fans should try the fern house at Tatton Park, Cheshire. Have loved these videos at Kew.

I’m originally from Mauritius and grew up there! It’s crazy how Mauritius and the other Mascarene island have been exploited in the 17th century for food, timber and agricolture without thinking of all the damage being caused to the islands’ ecosystem. So many endemic animals have been brought to extinction and maybe even plants by the end of the 18th century, like Mauritius famous Dodo... Now Mauritius has only about 2% of its native forest 😞 I can’t imagine how beautiful it must have been in its virgin state!
@GardeningatDouentza4 жыл бұрын
It is a sad story of exploitation and the legacy of colonialism. Island ecosystems are particularly special with endemic species but that makes them all the more vulnerable. I bet you will love that book, the plant Messiah.
