In this video I talk about my top 5 tropical-vibe plants, to get that jungle feel in the garden. I am collabing with Bill from Canada who follows a different approach to achieve the same goal.

Hi Rachel, I’m loving all these collaboration videos because it’s great to find new channels as well as seeing your favourites 😊 I adore tropical looking plants especially if I can have them outside. Paulownia wow. I’m not sure I have the room though. I have my first Elephant’s Ear to plant this year which I’m excited about. Ooh I planted a Trachycarpus last summer 😊 which I’m loving. If you know of any tropical looking plants which like full shade, could you tell me? Happy weekend 😊

Hi Jeanette. I saw your trachycarpus vide last year. You did great. For jungle-looking plants for partial shade positions I would go for Astilboides tabularis, Rodgersia podophylla, Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty' or P. pleianthmum, roscoea, bergenia and Telekia speciosa. All like moist soil except the bergenia. Full shade is always tricky. Hope this helps.

Yes! I plant out Colocasia in late Spring and pull them up in Fall. They have gorgeous foliage and are super low maintenance.

You know I've never had much luck with colocasia really. That'll be because I am a lazy waterer 😉 Glad they do well for you.

Great video and I liked how you chose to show tropical plants hardy in gardens and not just in greenhouses. I like what I am hearing about Telekia, lovely leaves, quite cold tolerant and can take some shade. Now all I need is to get hold of it.

One of our favorite out door tropicals here is ornamental banana tree! I got one from a lady who sells Plants by the hi way. Mine got really big last year! Much taller than myself. I've seen these get as tall as 15 ft!! I have to move mine soon cause it got too big in front of the greenhouse! Blocked sun to my Euphorbias &Cactus. To keep one of these here where it can get below zero°F, we just cut them down to the ground & mulch with maple leaves from our sugar maple. We have lots of oak leaves, but these are too acidic. A couple of ft of maple leaves keep it warm enough throughout winter, and very soon the leaves will start to rise and shoots grow out! Easy tree to grow!!! Thanks for sharing this great video !!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Ireland, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants 💖🌵🌺🏵🌿🌼🌲🌷🪴🌻🌴🌹🌳😃👍

Nice collaboration, I didn’t know about Bill’s channel, will check it out, thanks! I love Alocasias but not the price of the hybrid tubers. Since I garden in a small space I have found that the tubers I get in the Indian or Asian market are perfect. They are called Arvi in the Indian market near me, and are so cheap. ( Taro tubers too) Since the tubers are smaller they fit well as filler in the garden, or 3 in a plastic urn makes a nice accent plant. Actually there are lots of fun things to try to grow in ethnic markets, I love trying to grow all sorts of things, including turmeric and ginger. Happy St Patrick’s Day! ☘️ my paternal grandparents came from Dublin in 1914 🍀🌱🌿

Asian markets are super places to find little gems. I don't have any near but have been fetched taro roots in the past and grown small colocasias. It's always fun to experiment. Thank you for your Paddy's Day wishes and the very same to you.

As always... joining in the fun! Although I do not grow all of these personally, I see them growing about in my area (Houston, zone 9a). 1.) philodendron xanadu -- if grown in a protected spot, I have seen these pull through winters here -- as long as you don't lose power! 2.) caladiums -- they give bright tropical pops of color, and usually can get the corms to last 3-4 years before replacing; 3.) papaya -- I see these around town all the time; 4.) Strelitzia nicolai or reginae -- if planted in the ground in a protected spot, they will come back. Ours even survived the Big Freeze; 5.) tropical hibiscus -- another one we can get away with in our landscapes, I've grown var. 'Celia' for years now; I did used to see a lot of queen palms, but I think most of them are dead now... I think our winter weather is just a death sentence for them with the cold and wet, so even if the cold didn't get them... the crowns just rot out. I think most of Houston's palm diversity is just gone now -- doesn't stop the stores from trying to sell them though!

Wow, what a lot of plants that I couldn't grow here, despite us supposedly being in zone 9. Caladiums are so colourful. I was really tempted to try some this year but I have resisted so far! We'll see how long that lasts. Thanks for watching and contributing and have a wonderful day.

Its a shame that keeping paulownia relatively small by regular coppicing means no flowers :( My favourite tropical looking plant that I have in my garden is the abutilon with its lantern flowers, looking forward to it this year. Telekia speciosa is like a bigger version of Ligularia Othello which I have!
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 жыл бұрын
I guess paulownia is a reminder that we can't have everything. I love abutilon too but only Abutilon vitifolium is hardy here
@olsonlr
@olsonlr 2 жыл бұрын
Royal Paulownia is indeed invasive here. Seedling everywhere and grow quickly. Having said that I love the flowers but not the form so much. someone should develope named cultivars on trees with more flowers and compact form.
@GardeningatDouentza

Ah, well. I never see flowers because I coppice my trees but good point about sorely needed cultivars!

Alexandra, could you please direct me to a reliable resource who offers instructions in overwintering perennials (i.e. protective wrapping, watering, light levels, etc.) in northeast north america? Ostensibly my zone is designated zone 6, but at 1700 feet elevation, and winters seven months duration, it is closer to zone 4. My sincere thanks.
