I will develop no theory of it whatsoever, but Toby Fox is among other things a fan of the game Chrono Trigger. He uses the soundfont in a lot of his tracks, and made fan content of it before he even made the kickstarter for Undertale on the Fwugradiation channel. In Chrono Trigger, the titular Chrono Trigger is an egg that can be used to go back in time to a specific instant and change something, specifically to retroactively save the protagonist from death. This is an optional end-game side quest that you can forego entirely. It's not too important, and not too unimportant. Take from that what you will.

And if I remember right whether or not we use the egg doesn't give us a new ending, just whether or not we clear the Black Omen. So either way, our choices matter but we get the "same ending", so to speak.

@DyxoXinoro I think so yeah, iirc it's still one of the endings wherein the still alive cast go to the fair and say their goodbyes, just without the Crono and Marle on balloons credits thing, and like the saved-crono ending has two variants dependent on if you destroyed the Epoch or not.

@@gq_skelly Interestingly, though, the PS1 bonus menu still considers all four variants (with/without Crono/Epoch) the same, single ending if memory serves me right. Though I don't remember how it affects the fancy anime cutscene.

@DyxoXinoro I played the DS port, though my understanding is that in terms of extra content it is nigh identical to the PS1 port. At least on the ds, the anime cutscene things didn't account for those smaller details of the ending you got (though I may be wrong, as i almost always turned them off), and I also believe you are correct about how the ending is categorized. It mainly factors in at what point in the game you beat Lavos. One could branch out by comparing the Weird Route's sequence breaking to that, but personally I feel that would start being a little too bent on the Chrono Trigger similarities train. But I'm also biased since I'm presently on the fence as to whether or not the Weird Route will affect the ending.

@@gq_skelly I made a note about my thoughts regarding the weird route in a separate comment on the video, but in short I don't think it'll change too terribly much about the game's ending, per say, but I do think the ripple effecta from it will matter.

There is also the most important purpose of the egg: if you get the egg in ch1, you can interact with one of the cars in the traffic jam at the beginning of ch2. Theres a man there, who will wave at you happily. I love him and I'd do everything to keep him happy

There's this line at the end of the pacifist route from Asriel that says "Oh, and, please ... In the future, if you uh, see "me" ... , don't think of it as me, ok?", I can't help but think that that line has much more weight now with Ralsei.

I really enjoy this more grounded approach. Even when it comes to speculation it is well grounded. After all the time since the last chapter, I feel like a few theories elsewhere have spun out of control.

im currently making a playlist of a bunch of deltarune fanworks, whether that be theories, animations, memes, fan songs, fangames and playthroughs, just so i could look back on this period of the fandom with a lot of stuff from this time of the post chapter 2/sweepstakes, pre chapter 3/4 kind of era. you kind of mentioning that same kind of feeling at the start was pretty funny, as i was already about to add this video to the playlist, haha :D nice video as always!

Thank you for another lesson, professor. Including both the TL;DR version of the "who is the knight" debate and giving us your egg video as supplimentary material will be very helpful to myself and the other students, as it allows them to further their studies without artificially bloating the lesson structure (we have Professor Jaru's Knight lecture for that). If I may, I do believe there is an elegant way to explain how there fan be one ending, but our choices still matter. Deltarune started as a Survey program. As such, perhaps the experiment is a survey to see what we, the players, do when given absolute control over someone's life, with the dark worlds being an extension of the survey/experiment. Testing chambers, if you would. As such, the ending of the experiment has already been predetermined: after one week, we lose control, and _something_ happens to clear out the experiment. For the sake of this hypothetical, lets say the Roaring is inevitable, and it will eliminate everyone in both Hometown and the Dark World in one go. However, the survey results will be what happens during, shortly before, or immediately after the Roaring, with Gaster congratulating us either way. I believe Silent Hill likes to do things to that extent: the ending doesn't change, bit your actions detetmine the context to that ending. Chapter 2 can be seen as a microcosm of this, intentionally or not. No matter what we do (Fight, Spare, Weird), Kris makes the dark fountain. And less things change than do: Susie still spends the night, Noelle still visits her dad to play Dragon Blazers, Toriel still calls Undyne, who still doesn't believe us. However, the Weird route could be seen as us "breaking out" of the testing chamber, akin to how we can mess with the chambers in Portal. And like in Portal, messing with the chambers does not change the ending, but we can still get an achievement for breaking all the cameras. As for the egg? I think its too early to say, but its probably not important. Though, with my Portal comparison, the egg mans probably our version of Doug Rattmann, so maybe its not _un_important either. Hmm...

Credit goes to Tumblr user Overfedvenison for this theory, but I really like it and want to share it. Alphys is the Knight. There's precedent for her to be villainous. While characters aren't exactly like how they were in Undertale, they're similar enough. In Undertale, Alphys was friendly, awkward, and loved anime. She also lied to you and hid secrets about the terrible things she's done. So far, the Alphys in Deltarune only has the first half covered. She'd be able to know where to make dark fountains. She assigned the groups for the class project. She even told Susie and Kris to go to the closet that had a dark fountain. And, as a member of school staff, she would have the keys to lock the closet door behind you. Lastly, she has every reason to want to make dark fountains. No one, not even her students, seem to really respect her, and she's obsessed with fantasy. The use of Determination to make dark fountains seems to be a metaphor for creating fiction, so it makes sense that Alphys would be interested in that. And that's not even mentioning that her experiments in Undertale dealt with Determination.

YAYYYYY !!! ! i love these videossss!!! i love how concise and straightforward you are when explaining things, and how when you are talking about a theory, you don't assert that it is the truth, even when you personally believe it. at 5:33, i think a better way to phrase it would be "are you playing as a separate character within the game who is controlling kris, or is the game acknowledging that you, the player, are controlling them?" another word you could use is "diegetic", which means something that exists in the canon of the story, but it's not a widely known word and would require explanation. overall, a great video! it's really awesome you're making theories for these games a little more accessible for newcomers. can't wait to see what's next!!! ❤

11:08 - This is not true. That only happens if you've put an egg in the fridge before. Like, ever, in any save file. If you've never put an egg in the fridge, there will be a pickle inside the fridge. The pickle gets replaced with an Egg.

There is a third entity in Kris but just a heads up, there's a ton of stuff to read here! The knight or something completely else is controlling them at the end of chapter 1 and 2. I have proof of this, the birdcage has been through several crashes and it hints at that this isn't the first time Kris takes out their soul out before, if the player wasn't in control over Kris at the time why take their soul out and throw it into the birdcage? It doesn't make sense... And something I need to say that the SOUL is Kris's but the player's soul is combined into Kris's and don't worry, it connects to the theory, when skipping to the next chapter, the game picks out the vessel choices that is align with Kris and the game automatic makes Kris grab the ribbon and equip to Ralsei and they beelined to the end of the game without talking to any NPCs in the Lightworld, that fits into Kris's behavior. If Kris was doing everything by themself in chapter 1 but why doesn't anyone talks about Kris moving slow or shamble from place to place like they do at the end of chapters. That means Kris can move themself around normally, not the whole slow walk or anything, they take out their shield and save Susie by the Card King's attack. Remember the thing I said about Kris "shamble from place to place', it sounds familiar because this happens in Undertale. That's what happens in the genocide route at the Snowdin area when Papyrus tells Frisk about how they "shamble from place to place", that's because of Chara slowly gains influence over Frisk and their influence starts weak and more KILLS and LV the player has, will increase Chara's control/influence over Frisk to the point that they no longer move slowly or need to attack in battle and starting a FIGHT with a monster on their own. Kris does the same thing, they move awkwardly and it's not because they take their SOUL out, they still move that way even though they have the soul in them. It seems like there's something in Kris making them do this and taking CHARActer's role and maybe its also the narrator, the narrator knows things that Kris or the player (maybe both) don't know about, like it knows about what's gonna happen in the end of chapter 2 and about the birdcage. It perfectly fits into that role of Chara because they can stop the player from doing things, like giving away money to Gyftrot and many other things. The knight is taking Chara's role of a "partner" and narrator. Kris is taking Frisk's role and maybe even be the same person but a different counterpart of them like how Susie is called Suzy in Undertale. The player takes the same role as in Undertale.
