I just recently received my copy of elden ring and it had the exact same abrasions on the outer edge right out of the box. I also have discs that have never been inside my PS5 that have that. My conclusion is that it's a manufacture imperfection that's within their tolerance and not damage from the disc drive.

I think the same thing because when a disc spins at 5000 rpm then even the slightest interference can immediately shatter the disc or at the very least create smoke and possible fire because that even the slightest friction at 5000 rpm is a fire hazard.

I know right. Thats why i always suggest people when they want to buy a hardware early on i recommend for folks to pay a little bit extra for the warranty since they'll always goin to be some sort of "defect" that the hardware is goin to be have. But overall is never a bad thing to wait for a couple of years to get a better version of it.

I checked out my Borderlands 3 disc, that thing has been spinning in there for over 100 hours, no discernible markings on the disc, my launch PS5 is sitting horizontal in the cabinet, I don't remove discs when they're not being used either. That sucks though Matty and others that are experiencing this, I'm feeling pretty lucky having had no problems with my launch console

I have mine vertically, but I also always had this habit of removing discs before turning off the console since the PS4... that was always just to prevent the loud noise when I turn it on.

I hope Sony somehow addresses this issue, but given that it seems exclusively hardware related, I'm not entirely sure how this could be fixed besides a model revision or just telling people to have the console sit vertically when playing discs.

If this Were a widespread problem with some sort of actual design flaw it would be more widespread. They're always going to be certain small percent of defective units in any system or hardware. This is by no means a red ring of death situation. Whatever small percent of people that have an issue just need to report it and send it in like any other manufacturing defects. This sky is most definitely not falling but it does suck if you bought new and system and have any issues. I wouldn't tell anyone that they need to stand their system horizontally or vertically. I've had this series X and my PS5 horizontal in my Entertainment System since launch with no problems. I actually did have a problem with external hard drive causing my PS5 to crash within the first month before patch though. I was lucky enough to not have to send mine back and have it fixed with an update.

Just here to report that after watching this I checked my entire collection, and unfortunately it appears my PS4 slim has this problem as well. One disc that had sat in the console for a few months was grinded very noticably, but many had slight dings as well. It's possible that the damage on one or two discs was caused by me moving the console, but not all of them. The discs were only ever in their cases or the console. My console is also horizontal. But yeah it definitely appears that this is a problem across generations. Thanks for making this video, from now on I'll be sure to never leave discs in longer than necessary.

Oh crap!!!! I was hoping no one would say that 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Over a year ago, I got ripped off by a fake scalper for a PS5 console he never sent that I’d saved for months to get & paid a ridiculous amount for so I ended up buying my man a PS4 Pro console instead (he has a Brain Tumour & does weekly treatments at home so wanted something fun we could do together to keep his mind off treatments but still be on bed rest). We hadn’t owned a PlayStation since PS2 days… So I’ve also noticed at times some of our PS4 discs have edges like this too but cause there’s been times where I’ve bought a brand new & sealed game where the edges are a bit rough (too many times to be acceptable IMO), I just assumed I’d bought a lot more like that than I remembered (I keep our console horizontal too & I’m OCD with discs & our console, I use dust plugs, clean the area often, never leave discs out of cases ect). Well I finally just got my hands on a PS5 console for my partner after all that time & being scammed. Thankfully the phone company we’re already with offer PS5’s for RRP if you have 2 plans with them (which we already do) & FINALLY, they have the consoles back in stock for a limited time again & I just snagged one the other day. It hasn’t arrived yet, they said about 3 weeks but I’ll definitely have to lay that console horizontally too… Now I’m kinda crapping myself, especially with what you’ve just mentioned. I know my PS5 coming will be the version 2 so I was hoping it wouldn’t have this issue, but you reporting with your PS4 reminds me how a bunch of our PS4 discs are like this too & they definitely weren’t all like that when I bought them. I also like to bargain hunt & find limited editions of our favourite games too. Way too scared to check those at this point 🥺🥺

I recently checked the last two disks I had left in my ps5 and both had damaged edges. I had Tales of Zesteria (PS4) in my PS5 for about 2 weeks and it had damage that could only be felt when I ran my finger along the outside of the disk. The second game, Elex PS4, was in for about a month and had more damage again only felt and not apparently visible. My PS5 has been standing vertically since I set it up so this isn’t exclusive to laying the system horizontally. Thanks for bringing this to my attention and I plan to reach out to Sony for a response or some sort of resolution.

I’ve had Demon souls in my console for probably 6 months total. My console has been vertical since I got it at launch. Corners of the disk are sharp/worn down for me too.

So after watching this video, I checked a few of my discs - I have this problem too. Light abrasions and marks along the edges of the discs, nothing as crazy as Matty's, but definitely noticeable. I have the launch model, as well. It's extremely distressing and upsetting. There doesn't seem to be a lot out there on this issue either. I'm going to look into fixes for the disc spinning sound - I found one that is a very easy fix, without having to open and tinker with the internals - I'm going to try that and see if it's connected to the disc grinding. I wonder if the newer models grind the discs too?

The grinding sound is annoying and the scratches on the edges of the discs look bad but I doubt it will cause any issues to the playability of the discs. The main issue I'd be concerned about is the vibration causing damage to the disc drive. It could eventually cause the drive to die.

Highly doubt it’s your ps5. I just checked multiple discs for several platforms and every single one has imperfect edges. I would bet a lot of money that these are manufacturing defects when making discs. After 30 years I never noticed, but sure enough every CD, Game, and DVD I own has it. Including a DVD I just opened that’s never left it’s case specifically to check this. Some are worse than others, but I can feel it on every single one while running my finger along the edge. Edit: wanted to add that Blu-ray Discs can apparently spin up to over 5000 rpm, and while I couldn’t find the speed for PS5 specifically, based on the noise they make I have no doubts they are spinning insanely fast. The uneven wear and the statement “some places are thinner than others” make even less sense if that’s the case. At speeds that fast, the damage would almost definitely be worse and definitely be more even, for it to wear unevenly it would have to be making contact with something pretty inconsistently which is hard to imagine for a small disc rotating at 5000 rpm.

I don’t get this video. How is something touching the disc at 5000 rpm and causing uneven dings. It should be pretty even. Plus, at that speed, any type of obstruction would lead to the disc shattering or at the very least cause smoke or maybe fire because of the friction. I thoroughly checked my discs that have been sitting in the PS5 for a long along time and a couple of them do have rough edges when I run my finger over it but nothing suggests that the PS5 is grinding the edges. The edges on my discs are perfect without any dings or uneven spots. I even found similar edges on my PS4 discs that I’ve never used in my PS5. Something like this would be a major embarrassment and potential safety hazard for Sony and I don’t think they’d make any compromises in this case. Weird video.

@@Bl00dAndThunder That's what I'm saying! Pretty sure its just a thing that happens during production sometimes. But because it's so far out to the edges it poses no readability issues and it doesn't hurt anything. I literally took a couple DVDs straight out of an unopened case and was able to find imperfections along the edges. It's something I have never noticed before, but now that I'm aware of it I'm noticing it on pretty much every type of disc I come across. Except regular CDs for some reason lol. Now people are arguing in a PS5 facebook group I'm in about how "you're not supposed to put it horizontal because it shreds your discs". And sure enough, this is the only thing they link back to for proof. People are dumb.

@@PloopChute I looked at a few DVDs myself and while not all of them had imperfections, there were a couple that had rough edges and weird patterns on the edges which were exactly same as what I saw on my PS5 discs. Now, if I didn’t have anything to compare my PS5 discs to then I’d think that the PS5 was grinding my discs thanks to this video lol. I even took my discs out in the sun to get a better look at the edges and nothing looks chipped or tapered as a result of grinding nor is there any residue of the chipped disc (if that was the case) anywhere. I couldn’t even find any scratches on the disc. They’re in pristine, scratch-less condition. The rough edges can give the impression that the disc is experiencing some sort of grinding but that’s definitely not the case for me at least.

Just checked a lot of my discs and I do notice something like this. My most played game on ps5 is GOT, and it seems to have the most notable damage. I went through all my other games and a few have it but it seems like playtime isn’t related to it. I also checked some Xbox games and I noticed similar stuff on them. I also checked some 4K Blu-ray and again, some had it even movies I had never put in to a ps5 or anything. Even games I’ve never played have it so idk. Anyways, I have my ps5 horizontallly.

This problem has existed since the PS4 due to the design of the slot on the disc drive. Sony want you to buy digital games instead.

I can't verify if my console is of the affected units but I did come across an anomoly while watching my original Dragon Ball DVDs. I distinctly remember watching them on my PS3, PS4, and just recently PS5. The PS5 was the only one to experience this. Upon insertion of this disc I could hear an audible discrepency when hearing the drive spool up. Knowing something was up I reinserted the previous disc and that spooled up just fine, so I went back to the problemed disc again and the vibration returned. I noticed the edges were different on the discs since my 5 seasons of the show were collected over time. The problematic discs were printed more recently. I decided to do something dumb and use my nail to slowly file away around the inner edges of the disc that disc drives latch onto until they were as smooth as the previous discs and sure enough it ran normally again. So, my armchair theory is that there are varying tolerances in these discs that exceed what the loading mechanism in the PS5's disc drive can deal with (which appear to be lesser than my previous console's tolerances) and may improperly seat a disc into the spindle making it wobble while spinning causing it to smack into whatever components are within reach of the wobbling disc. So if you're affected by this and are willing to try it by all means, just don't go overboard on it. I only needed to do a few laps of mild pressure on the edges to smooth things out. I hope this is able to help some people

It most likely has something to do with leaving them in the console for an extended period of time. None of mine are damaged. Also you should send your ps5 in for repair because the disc drive shouldn’t sound like that

Know I’m late to the party, but I was installing Witcher 3 from disc on my ps5 and noticed crazy noises so I paused the download and ejected the disk, there were actually major scratches on the disc surface, unless I wasn’t aware before hand these were completely new, the disk also had some abrasion on the edge as you had described. I right away cleaned my console, and actually found a tiny piece of what looked like disc surface near the drive, and cleaned the surrounding area and reset it in the stand (horizontal) I hadn’t cleaned my console since pre Christmas and we had a decent group over for the holiday, upon checking discs I played since the holiday they all have minor abrasion on the edge like yours however discs I played pre Christmas are all fine. So I’m thinking somehow the console got slightly dis aligned in the stand and because it wasn’t perfectly horizontal the discs scratched. If you’ve found any insight into the issue I’d appreciate it, going to be keeping tabs on discs in put into the console moving forward to see if they wear at all, hoping the remount of the stand helped the issue

I put in a movie disc earlier today and my ps5 scratched the disc. Thank god I got a blu-ray player. I'm never going to use my PS5 for playing moves ever again. As for my games though, I don't know what I'm going to do about them just yet.

Me and my roommate both have a PS5. He keeps his in the living room horizontal and mine is vertical in my bedroom. The only game I have with noticeable scratches is Ghost of Tsushima, which is the physical game I have probably played most in the living room. All my other games feel fine. I won’t be leaving discs in the system when I power down from now on.

The truth is, it’s always been a fact that leaving a disc in your console when it’s not being used has been a poor decision. It was true in the 360, the PS3, and many others.

Hurray for me my PS5 has been vertical since I bought it. Man I'm sorry bout what's happening with your PS5 Matty now you got me paranoid and wanting to check my disc but I'm headed to work for now so it'll have to wait until I get off. Hopefully mine are OK. I had a rather similar experience to this back in the day with my Xbox 360 where it would crack out the interior ring of the disc. Went thru 2 copies of the Elderscrolls IV Oblivion a copy of the original Saint's Row and Left 4 Dead. After it happened to Left 4 Dead called Microsoft and they offered to take a look at the console as it was still under warranty but they would not replace Left 4 Dead because they said they could only replace 1st-party Microsoft Games Studio games and I would have to contact Valve for a replacement disc. When I contacted Valve customer support and explained to them the situation and what Microsoft told me they said they too would not replace the disc as its not their responsibility for it breaking it was the Xbox console. I went back to Microsoft and told them what Valve said and all Microsoft could do was offer me a Microsoft Games studio game of equal value as a replacement. I think I got Kameo lol 🤣🤣🤣

My Xbox Series X has a similar problem although the serrations are not as serious as the ones that you showed. I left my copy of Yakuza Like a Dragon in my console for about 5 months and it's noticeable. I am tempted to use my warranty to get my unit repaired or replaced

My PS5 is vertical/wall mounted and it does make that same god aweful loud as hell noise when using a disk. Just checked and none of my disks I have used in it have the edges scratched though. Someone should do a scientific test to see if it is a thing, maybe I will if I get time. lol

The vibration from the disc in the console can also cause it to wobble as the console is slightly moving from the vibration

Make sure your stand is rotated completely in the hooks are secure because there should definitely be no wobble.

I’ve kept mine vertical since I got it and most of the time COD Cold War has been in it. I just checked and it’s slightly chipped on the edge. I’m keeping my disks out unless they are being used.

I just noticed this on one of my disc wasnt even playing it long maybe 2 hours max brand new game edges are rough and like a white grayish paint on the outer edge pretty noticeable too looks pretty similar to the colour of the design of the disc not touching the data part yet but the residue is pretty close

I had mine layers flat since I got it and have no problems like this I just checked my disc's that I've been using lately no problems maybe don't leave the disc in the system take it out when ya is done

I'm not an engineer but my guess is they sped up the disc speed for faster data reading to beyond the disks warp limit. This would explain the patch to slow down the speed this decreasing noise. Well that or someone fucked up calculating disk clearance required.

The discs are the same material as DVD's aside from the Bluray protective coating and Bluray layers. Bluray itself spins much slower than DVD generally because the data is packed much tighter and spinning slower is actually needed. So, basically. I would assume this is an issue with the drive itself. I need intense closeups to see if the grooves are even or look like they're consistently at an angle. If at an angle, then it could be that the disc is very close to something internally and is slightly scrubbing against it. But, the way this is shown is very odd. How could it shave down the side more and more like that and keep working further in? A movable part at the edge of the disc? How else would it not just abruptly chew into it or even allow it to enter at all? We need an in depth analysis, and really need to see inside his BluRay drive to verify any dust or pieces off of the discs.

@@edgeofsins A indepth analysis would be great. It's a terrible problem to be having but quite a interesting problem to look at. I'm baffled at what it is and happy for the info you gave. All new information is great to have. You've also taught me I need to look into how blu-ray players work.

This post is a bit late but just recently this Is happening to my FarCry6 disc.. the label side where closest to the center hole of the Disc , some of the label has flaked off.. My PS5 is standing up btw

Wow this sux if it's a hardware issue, sony should be fixing this for revision and offer repairs for affected users. Only time I seen this happen was when someone physicall moved a 360 while on & playing Black Ops with disc in & spinning very fast. Left nasty scratches too, even worse though after that the disc would only play Zombie maps if it could load(which was not often) then soon after it would get buggy and crash. Only certain maps worked for some online modes, and campaign froze up early the same spot every time. So not unreadable but almost unplayable. Ever since that incident there has been the unwritten rule: DO NOT MOVE any machine while on or off with a disc inside. NO

I've only had mine for a month and played Ratchet and Clank through over the course of a couple weeks and no damage to my disc but I have my console in the vertical position so maybe that's got something to do with it

So far all of my disc are still "ok" but i always check on them just to make sure they're clean and dont have any damage on em. So far the only thing that came with the hardware that turn out to be "defective" was my PS5 controller, and yes is the typical case of the analog stick problems. Sometimes i can't even move my character properly in for example KingdomHearts 3 basically in some game i can play just fine but in others i just can't because of the analog stick's drift.

My ps5 is vertical and l can say I’ve no problems with the discs being ground or even with noise and it’s used several hours a day, it is a later console as I’ve only had it a few months.

I have a vertical ps5. My MLB the show 21 has a very slight inconsistent ring at the edge of the disc. I been playing road to the show for the last couple of months. I compared it to my newer copy of Fallen Order and it looked clean.

Had Valhalla in the Playstation over a few months played nearly 220 hours of it so far and no problems with the disc. check the other discs that I had in there for a while and nothing. mind you my consul is vertical and I don’t get that loud spinning sounds from it that you’re talking about. Now mine is always on rest mode I don’t know if that is a thing as well to consider but I’m not booting it up from scratch it’s always just resting

Picked up Hot Wheels Unleashed a couple weeks ago. Left the disc in since then. Sure enough, I have a couple rough spots, but not nearly as severe. I’ve had my PS5 since near launch. It’s vertical.

I got my PS5 in January of this year, so I'm not sure if it's a launch model or any kind of revision, but I checked AC Odyssey which by far has spent the most time in my PS5 and I can't find any damage on it. It's always been in vertical orientation.

I just checked a disc that had been sitting in my PS5 for about a year… I didn’t really see anything. I mean there is a few dings but I also bought the game used. Hmmm… Edit: Yeah, mine is vertically oriented (funny enough for the same reason: it wouldn’t fit the other way in my setup).

I have had mine horizontally since launch, and non of my disks are showing this issue. Also, my PS5 doesn't make this crazy loud noise when spinning my discs that you show in your video. Mine is pretty silent, that could be a red flag for you right there.

I got a ps5 Yesterday and it worked 100% but this morning I put grand turismo in and it got stuck and my ps5 got very loud , I tried to eject it multiple times and it was stuck after like 3 min it got out and there was a massive chip on the edge of the disc
