Resident Evil 1 did one thing: It put it on the map of games journalists. Back in the days when we used to buy actual magazines, printed on paper, including posters, for gaming. This peaked around 1999 when Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill got a lot of hype.

Loved Silent Hill and its psychological horror when it released on the PS1. Ironically,The tech limitations of the PS1 was what made the atmosphere stand out with the "fog" to create that sense of tension and fear. Thanks for the video. Man I really love Survival Horror games wayback when I was a kid. The very first Survival Horror game I played is RE3 and Dino Crisis. After that I played RE1, RE2, PE1 and Silent Hill. Those days are the best. So I agree that PS1 did really revolutionize the Survival Horror genre and PS2 mostly proved and perfected it when they released SH2, SH3, SH4 , RE Code Veronica X and more. Then we have Fatal Frame 1,2 and 3 that totally supports the genre. Sadly when PS3 came out Survival Horror was kind of left out and almost forgotten. It's really good that RE returns its spark on PS4 but so sad that SH was left out in the dust... It's really tiring to see that today most of the games are almost open world.

It's great that you shed some light on some more obscure horror games on the Playstation, while still covering the more popular titles like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I wasn't sure whether you were going for something more informative than analytical, as you focused more on the history of the genre than the quality of the games themselves, but I think that has a place on KZbin as well. Great production too, as I dug the little timeline effect you used as you talked about each game. This was a cool watch, so keep up the good work and be sure to keep having fun with it. Awesome job!

@RayvenDraws
@RayvenDraws 2 жыл бұрын
I'd like to start by saying: great job on the production value. Good pacing, narration, really enjoyed the games timeline you got going on. My only gripe really, is the same gripe I have with almost every single video essay out there that talks about Survival Horror. And that pertains to how everyone keeps confusing Survival Horror games with Pure Horror games. They're similar, but not the same. Shinji Mikami, the pioneer/father of the genre, actually did state the definition of Survival Horror. According to Mikami-san, a Survival Horror game is a game where the sense of fear and exhilaration coincide. It's a broad term, but easy enough to distinguish the subgenre from other horror subgenres. That's just the definition, but the article that it's sourced from actually goes into more detail, including emphasising action elements and distinguishing Resident Evil from franchises such as Clock Tower and Silent Hill, as they are considered Pure Horror games in Japan, not Survival Horror. I invite you to take a look at the sources I used for a video essay I made about RE4, as they provide a great deal of context to understanding the genre better. You can find them in the video description. I don't understand why, for example... everyone says RE1 Remake, a game directed by Shinji Mikami himself, is considered Survival Horror perfection... yet no one refers to his definition of Survival Horror when it comes to properly labeling RE4's genre, a game which Mikami also directed. RE4 is much, much closer to his definition than RE1 Remake. In fact, the emphasis on keeping it Survival Horror is the entire reason the DMC prototype was scrapped. The definition has been out there for a few years now. Idk why it's never used. That being said, I'm leaving a like because I enjoyed the overall format of the video.
@landenhansen64
@landenhansen64 2 жыл бұрын
No, thank you I appreciate the insight and I also appreciate the comments on the video itself it means a lot. I guess the main point of contention with the branding of survival horror is its looseness with its audience as well as Shinji Mikami being too late to put an official definition on the genre. In the future, I will try and be more cognizant of the use of the term. Thank you for bringing this to light.

Absolutely loved this video. Your level of detail and focus on the timeline of the transition of horror but also their inspirations or originality behind it were awesome. I hope you do a video on the PS2 horror genre. I think that’s really where horror started to diversify itself while also having intricate design choices of their own. Fatal frames camera, The Thing’s iconic testing scene but also the transformation of your Ally soldiers, even an insanity feature where your squad could ultimate decide to kill themselves. Only two examples but I know there was a whole lot more to horror especially during PS2 days. Wish we could go back. Again love this video

Enjoyable timeframe for horror games from Atari 2600 to PS1. One suggestion, should you ever decide to update this video, consider adding a little about early home computer horror games like Forbidden Forest and Aztec Adventure, as these games involve nasty deaths, and their mounting sense of escalation creates a real feeling of dread, which many early horror games tended to lack. In my opinion almost all the credit for the first Silent Hill game being scary should go to Akira Yamoaka, whose work on the music and sound design of the game is absolutely incredible. Every single sound, be it the music tracks themselves or the monster noises and background ambience, evokes instantly this feeling of darkness and fear. Its heavy, oppressive, unsettling, grimy and industrial, and it holds up insanely well (better than practically any other music/sound design of the era in video games). The man's work on Team Silent's games remains my favourite music and sound design of any games ever. An absolute genius.

Idc what you say. The first silent hill play through on og playstation is the scariest playthrough in a game you can ever have. IYKYK. Edit: I was surprised by your professionalism that your sub count is where it is. I guess this is your first big vid or such. Keep up your ideas and run with them! They will be successful! Good luck and you’ve earned my sub :)

Great video! Thank you for this. It's funny, wasn't that big into the RE or survival horror games, but my friends always had me playing them. RE3 and PE II are ones I remember playing the most. But 9:10, that list of yours, I must have just missed, seen snippets of in game magazines, or watched friends play a bunch of those. Probably just saw advertisements or in rental stores. Lots of hazy fragments of "oh yeah! That existed!"

Although the Resident Evil series and SIlent Hill on the PSX were absolute classics that I still love to this day, there is just something about Parasite Eve that hits the nostalgia even more for me. Might be because it's in a "real" setting and I grew up seeing those places in movies, series and other places, but also because it was made by Squaresoft that was pumping out classics that I loved left and right.
