Very helpful video, especially since I’m on the hunt for a light combination plane. Here in the States, the majority are 45 and 50s.

Even here in Australia finding a plough plane isn't easy. Not sure why, maybe everyone kept their plough planes and sold their 45 and 50s

There's a site in England that sells sets of plough blades for a reasonable price, I've found that pine is tricky being a softer wood but as you've shown, sharp blade and a light cut works a treat, the harder woods, jarrah for example it really shines! Great video!

Thanks, i will google the website and have a looks, i have found the plough works just as well in hard woods as soft.

Great video Luke thanks. I have a Record no 50 (original not the improved version - different blade adjustment) and a Stanley 13 - 030. Both are missing the correct cutters. I bought the Stanley with 3 cutters only to find they were 2mm thick (which flexed in use) instead of the 3mm of the original blades. Recently I did a lot of grooving with a router and I just didn't enjoy the process. It always felt too dangerous using it on slightly damp pressure-treated wood - not to mention the amount of sawdust it spread everywhere. So I've been trying to revive the Record and the Stanley plough planes . After a lot of fettling, I managed to make a cutter that will fit both planes from an old 1/4inch chisel blade. I was disappointed with the performance though. However as per your demonstration I wasn't using it correctly. I suppose I was expecting it to cut as smoothly as a bench plane. So I tried to cut long sweeps which didn't work - it dug in. Great tip to start at the other end:). I'll give that a go when I get to the shed again (broke my ankle recently so not doing much woodworking at the moment).

I have got Luban no.43 which is replica of record no.43 - it's the same size but have different handle ( main is like the 44). I am small but even my hand it feels to tight....but it is very light it came with 4 cutters and i can attached small saw blade in to it so i can saw grooves for pre-resawing using my frane saw. I love working with it!!!

Thanks, i will have a look at it, always like to recommend quality alternatives to vintage where possible. Vintage tools are not always available

Nice little plough plane. Neither Stanley (eg No 50) nor Record mastered the cutter holding. Both seem fiddly. The cam screw on the 45 is a big improvement.

The blade holding works ok, but I agree the 45 blade holding is way better.

I noticed that the plane is cracked near the handle; any concern regarding that or is there any way to repair it? I appreciate the video seeing as how I have been wondering how they worked. I had never heard of a plough plane until last week.

That whole back piece from that crack was completely broken off when I got it. It was like that when i bought it on ebay, I just didn't see it as it was dirty. I did super glue it back on but it fell off again a few weeks after this video. Not sure if it is repairable

Wow, holy cow man, I truly feel for you. I am reading a book titled The Anarchist Toolbox and he basically writes that we should run as far away from eBay as we can. Alas, too late in you case. Perhaps Liquid Metal may help? @@AussieWoodshed
