In this new series, we will be spending some time 'hanging out' in the shop, with some really cool hand tools. Some of these tools are really unique and rare, and some will be tools that are common but function in an optimal way. In either case, we will have a lot of fun! LIKE, COMMENT, AND SUBSCRIBE!

Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan Hey Kyle, ya I went out to my shop and found it. it's a plow plane of sort. all it says on it is ( made in the USA ). guess the MFG wasn't proud of it or something ????? on eBay there is one just like it but it's a. STANLEY. it has a fence and one iron plus the hold down. the front area is set up the same as the rear part of the plane. but no iron/blade setup for the front. I'd send you photos but don't know how on a KZbin reply area.. if I can get a way to contact you I'll shoot you some pictures. thanks man for the interest in it. take care now !!!!!!!!!

I'd love some pictures! Send em' to weiderfan.business@gmail.com !! What you're describing sounds like a rabbeting plane

Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan Ya I believe that it is called a Duplex Rabbet plane. The blade is too wide for a Tenon plane. eBay has a couple nice ones but as often as I use one $100.00 would not be a wise investment although it's cool !!!! I'll get some pictures over to you a bit later. Thanks for the interest. ....

The reason the plane is hard to hold upright is because the fence goes on the other side of the plane if you're a "righty". The left hand's only job is to hold the fence against the face of the wood. The right hand's job is to push the plane. Love the plane, and the video. I'm looking for one myself. Thanks for sharing!

Good Job! I have the record 043 and the 044. The 044 is a bit more comfortable to use but both are worth having. Extremely well made planes. I finally found a matching pair of late model Stanley side rebate planes. These make final fitment a joy as the record uses fixed width cutters. I have several vintage woodworking machines by Oliver, porter faye etc. But when it comes to doing final work on a nice one off project, my weapon of choice is the hand tool!!! Planes of various sorts just give you the tact and control you need for fine work.

What a nice well thought out / designed tool. I have recently purchased the Stanley variant that has only one fence mounting post rather that the two on the Record, the Record being a bit better on this account. I have added a hardwood extended fence to the original and it gives a bit better stability. Not entirely easy to use at first but only a little practice and you soon get good results. I have a full set of standard width cutters but I am aware that others more fancy exist. There don't seem to be as many of the 044 available as opposed to the 045 or 055 which you see on uTube. Good video and well done for mentioning Paul Sellers. Go see his video also. Thanks Kyle I'll try making your box soon.

If you have the fence on the left hand side the plane can be steadied with the left hand. That is what the bow in it if for. You start the plane at the end rather than the beginning so you make a groove for the plane to run in. I have used one of these for over 30 years and they are great. Obviously, if you are left handed, put the fence on the right. Dave.

Looks u have experienced this plane a lot sir , so I have a quick question , isn't this plane have a blade for making tunge ?? all the cutters come with it are straight ??
@davesheppard8797
@davesheppard8797 4 жыл бұрын
@@athmostafa2462 No, I do have one in work that did have a tongue cutter with it. This one doesn't have one. You can do tongues with this but you would have to do a rebate either side of your timber giving you a tongue that is a clearance size for one of the cutters. I am not working at present so cannot get the plane to see what it is. I know it is made by Stanley and it has a wooden inlayed handle instead of the steel one. I think it is a Stanley 55 but I wouldn't swear to it. Stay safe my friend, Dave.

I love my 044! Thank you for the idea to build a box for it.The stability will improve once you move the fence to the other side and add a piece of wood. Note the relief in the fence, it is there to allow the cutting iron to be placed tight to, or past the fence for rebating. I will send you some photos of the complete user manual this evening.

“ Hand Tool Hang-out “ 😁 I LIKE it !! Totally cool man ! Can I say one thing? When on your return stroke, if you lift the blade up a bit so it doesn’t drag, it will stay sharp longer.

You've got the fence mounted on the right side for a lefty...turn it round so the fence is on the left side...that way, you can apply side pressure with your left hand and eliminate the wobble problem

That fence has a couple holes. You could maybe screw a large guide board to the fence on the tool and that would give you enough reference to evenly plane away the tongue like you were struggling with here, perhaps.

Like many others, I noted that your fence is on the wrong side. Or perhaps the non-preferred side. You refer to Paul Sellers so I suggest you check his book Essential Hand tools page 235 where you will find a photograph of how the plane is normally set up. This is also shown in the book Planecraft, hand planing by modern methods on pages 122 and 123. Give it a try and you should find it easier to control. If you prefer your set up and it works for you, then stick with it. That's constructive comment, I thought the video was clear and well done.

Hey Chris, I know to hold the fence, but I'm pretty sure the fence can go on either side, without making a real difference. In the case of putting a tongue and groove in a 10" board, you can only do it by having the fence how I have it here. I use both sides, however is best at the time. I didn't realize the depth stop was backwords. Thanks! :-)
@bungy1962

No - Chris is correct and you have it on the wrong side. there is a cutout on the fence that aligns with the blade.
