Here's the thing in here: that's kinda based on how the Japanese were. Obviously not all, but they had this kind of mentality of superiority in there, and I think they still do in a way. Obviously not all of them, but it's something they kinda had. Plus, take in count they are an isolated country, who was apart from the world until very recently.

Woah wait, I think it's only John that's from Sinnoh, isn't Sam supposed to be from somewhere in the west? I think you've missed something, the Pikachu you caught at the lighthouse? It can be shown to the sailor in Viridian. The guy eventually becomes the grumpy old man from gen 1 blocking the road. Also, since Oak mentions it right at the beginning, in Vermillion, Argonaut is Kurt. Subscribed in anticipation of Red's Journey :O
