I think it worries people here in the SE because, even in NC, we average well above freezing and rarely see snow. Maybe once every 5-10 years do we get some crazy snowfall/winter weather. I don't believe we'll see much of anything here in central NC. This colder weather by itself will put a strain on our power grids (if it gets as cold as some models have shown). Conditions have to be absolutely PERFECT for SE snowstorms....but it's WILD that the models have shown it off and on the past few days.

Perfect bring on the polar vortex I love that and I need it because I have some igloos that I have built and I want cold temperatures for a long time so I can be enjoying it and I been having a lot of warm and rainy days and had to keep the igloo covered with a white trap so the snows cold air can be trapped and it can stay.

I don’t know about that far back, 1996 was wild, 2014 was a big hit for the Ohio Valley area. The models are easing back on the cold some, even so, the coldest runs weren’t challenging the cold that far back.
@AndresdelCampo-t1u18 күн бұрын
A polar vortex to me is still a good ol fashioned cold spell or cold snap, polar vortex just sounds more dramatic, and after all, all of our winters are polar because the North Pole or South Pole is where the cold air comes from.

What usually proceeds that causes the Polar jet to start kicking out these cold air masses? I get that the jet starts getting "kinks" in it but was curious of what gets it started?
@russelltate370318 күн бұрын
Here is my homework teacher: The lack of a strong northern jet stream. The weakening jet stream begins undulations rather than a predominantly W to E direction. Strong high pressure systems that block the jet stream's path and really causes a larger directional change allowing the polar cold air to move south.
@jeffdees905718 күн бұрын

@garys.784618 күн бұрын
Regarding the Lake Effect snows in upstate NY in the next few days. You're not quite correct regarding the snow expected off of Lake Ontario. Yes, a few weeks back it was the Tug Hill, Jefferson and Lewis counties mainly. Look at your latest model maps. This time the snow bands will be further southward. Owsego, Oneida, Onondaga, Madison and Herkimer counties. In these parts, wind direction is a big factor. The same with Lake Erie. This time the area well south of Buffalo will be expected as opposed to the last event.
@WeatherWithTravis18 күн бұрын
Maybe, but NWS had winter storm watches out for those areas, now lake effect snow warnings.
@SILAS-y7j18 күн бұрын
If a low is 1000 you would get a little storm most of the time off the coast if it was in the gulf it would be a tropical storm now if it was a 990 if it was winter and it hit the coat people would see about 1 to 5 inches of snow and if it was in the gulf then that would be a cat 1 or 2 now if it was a 980 it would drop around 2 to 12 inches a big snowstorm and in the gulf a cat 1, 2, or 3 now if it was a 970 it could drop 3 to 37 inches of snow! and would be a cat 3, 4, or 5 in the gulf!!! at least that's what i think...
